At some point in the past, Black Maria devoured the Kumo Kumo no Mi, Model: Rosamygale Grauvogeli. Her abilities were demonstrated during the raid in Onigashima.
The user of this Zoan can transform into a Rosamygale grauvogeli, an ancient heavy-bodied, stout-legged mygalomorph spider, as well as human-spider hybrid. The user’s metamorphosis will be proportional to their natural body, which in Black Maria’s case exaggerates her spider form’s size to dwarf normal humans.
The user can make sticky spider silk from their body, which Black Maria refers to as “Hard Gum”. Although genuine spiders extrude silk from their abdomens, the user of this fruit can produce it from even their fingertips. Silk can be used to construct webs and other structures aimed at capturing and/or immobilizing enemies, such as sticky nets that can also serve as a shield. The webs are strong enough to keep physically powerful fights bound and, according to Black Maria, anyone caught in them will never be able to escape. The user can create the webs into complicated arrays of traps such that no matter where an enemy treads, they will be captured.
Because the webs are highly flammable, they can be used to instantly set the user’s surroundings aflame by lighting them up, as Black Maria does by using the human face on her spider body, which is capable of spitting out fire from its mouth, though this may be due to additional abilities granted by Black Maria’s tampering with her fruit’s hybrid form via mutation drugs.
Otherwise, being a carnivorous Ancient Zoan, this Zoan power is expected to significantly boost the user’s physical abilities. The user becomes much more mobile, especially in enclosed environments, using their spider legs to walk on walls and upside-down on ceilings; they may also use their webs to more securely stick onto and suspend themselves from overhead surfaces. In addition, the user’s spider legs can produce poison, making them an effective close-range weapon.
If the user’s webs freeze, they become brittle and easily shattered. In Black Maria’s case, her upper body remaining human appears to put her at a higher risk of injury than Zoan users who evenly transform their entire body to increase their resilience. This was evident when Black Maria was defeated by Nico Robin, who specifically targeted her upper body to seal the finishing blow. Apart from that, the user is exposed to the usual Devil Fruit flaws.
The regular “hybrid” form of this fruit would give its user six back limbs, a conspicuous spider abdomen, and a more arachnoid upper half of their face with a pair of enormous spider eyes. However, this fruit’s current user, Black Maria, has tampered with her Human-Beast form, which drastically altered its appearance with pharmaceuticals, much like Tony Tony Chopper can with his Rumble Balls. Instead of preserving a humanoid shape with animal changes throughout, as is typical for Zoans, her upper body remains totally human but her legs are replaced by a full spider body, causing her transformation to resemble that of a SMILE user.
The spider body has its own cartoonishly human-like face, complete with human eyes, a toothed, drooling mouth, and a tongue protruding out; the face appears to be alive, with the ability to alter expressions and move its mouth. The oiran felt Black Maria’s natural hybrid form was not “lovely”, so she changed her transformation.
Overall, the powers that come with Black Maria’s altered transformation make it quite versatile by Zoan standards, which gives her various methods to maintain a territorial advantage in battle — especially if she has time to prepare. She can use spider webs to cover the battlefield with traps, build protective barricades, or directly ensnare opponents, leaving them exposed to follow-up strikes from her bladed polearm and knuckle dusters. She may also strike opponents with her poison-tipped spider legs and engulf the battlefield in flames with her fire-breathing spider face, igniting her webs.
Despite being a capable fighter herself, Black Maria favors a passive, indirect approach during wartime, sitting in one location putting up spider net traps and then using her henchmen to draw her would-be victims to herself and incapacitate them after capture. Black Maria also enjoys torturing victims she has caught in her webs, generally for her cruel delight.
In direct combat, Black Maria uses her power in conjunction with Wanyudo, her flaming polearm, to gain the territorial advantage in indoor combat, such as using webs to cling to the ceiling and then setting the floor on fire with her subordinate-turned-weapon, putting her opponent at a mobility disadvantage.
Black Maria has demonstrated the flooring abilities with her special powers:
Black Maria fires many spider nets at her enemy, which latches and imprisons them, particularly their limbs.
After catching an opponent with her Marianette technique, Black Maria uses the same webs to drag the enemy’s arms apart, rendering them defenseless against subsequent assaults.
Black Maria develops a crisscrossed net formation in front of her, blocking incoming blows, and especially in an inside corridor, preventing an opponent from approaching her.
Black Maria has the human face on her lower spider half breathe out fire in order to set ablaze any of her previously built webs, which is achievable because of the flammability of the webs.
