Kuraigana Island is located in Paradise which is the first half of the Grand Line and stretches from the Twin Cape to Mary Geoise. It got its name from people that have returned from the New World. The first half of the Grand Line possesses highly volatile and unpredictable weather conditions and the first part of Paradise is very chaotic.
Every island in Paradise presents its own unique challenges, and the level of difficulty seems to increase the farther one travels. A countless number of pirate crews have entered the Grand Line, though only a small handful have made it that far.
A war had been fought on this island. The Humandrills who were living in the forests were gifted with the capability of learning from humans. As they saw humans fight, the Humandrills also learned how to fight and wield weapons and became really strong fighters. After this war ended, Mihawk arrived on the Island and made the castle his home. Later on, when Perona was sent here by Bartholomew Kuma, she told him that she wanted to go on a trip but she sent her to these ruins themselves.
During the Sabaody Archipelago Arc, Roronoa Zoro was also sent to this island by Bartholomew Kuma. This is the place where both Perona and Zoro meet Mihawk as he had just returned from the Marineford War. Mihawk then informed Perona of Gecko Moria's (presumed) death. He even gave Zoro a boat to return back to his crew and told him about the island’s history and warned him about the Humandrills.
Later on, both Perona and Mihawk began to reconstruct Kuraigana Island by tilling the torn land. Seeing both Mihawk and Perona restoring the place, the Humandrills also learned how to become peaceful and turned into friendly and helpful farmhands.
The people who live on Kuraigana Island are:
Dracule Mihawk is the mysterious swordsman that appeared in the start of the series. He is known as the world's best swordsman. The World Government was impressed by Dracule's skills with the sword so much that they asked him to be a Warlord. He takes care of all the Warlord's duties without a complaint and even took part in the Marineford war, even though he didn't agree with its reasoning. Even though he is loyal to the World Government, Mihawk does as he pleases and even personally trains Roronoa Zoro.
Roronoa Zoro was famously known as 'Pirate Hunter Zoro' as his profession before becoming a part of the Straw Hats crew was that of a bounty hunter. Zoro was born in the East Blue and trained his whole life in a dojo where he learned all about using swords. Currently, Zoro is a master of the Three Sword Style, a technique that was made in his village. He dreams of becoming one of the strongest swordsmen in the world.
Perona is also known as the ‘Ghost Princess’. She was the Commander of the Wild Zombies and Surprise Zombies of Thriller Bark before it collapsed. She was also part of the Mysterious Four.
The name ‘Kuraigana’ means “Gloomy, isn't it?” in English.
‘Shikkeauru’ which is the name of the fallen kingdom means “Oh! It’s damp” in English.
The curly hills on Kuraigana Island are similar to Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, which is one of Eiichiro Oda's favorite movies.
