Lao G was a member of the Donquixote Pirates, at the age of 54, when a 10-year-old Trafalgar Law joined the crew. After about a week, Lao G, along with other members, learned about Law's Amber Lead Syndrome and his escape from the extermination of Flevance. While on a raid, Lao G and Gladius explained the tragic history of Flevance to Baby 5.
As the crew traveled to the Grand Line, they engaged in various activities such as looting, making business deals, and collecting bounties. Lao G was also tasked with teaching Law hand-to-hand combat skills on Doflamingo's orders.
Six months after Law and Corazon left the crew, the Donquixote Pirates plotted to steal the Ope Ope no Mi. They arrived at Minion Island, where Vergo informed them of Rosinante's betrayal. During the raid on the Barrels Pirates' hideout, they encountered Rosinante, attacked him, and left him for dead when Doflamingo arrived.
Participating in Doflamingo's takeover of Dressrosa, Lao G was involved in storming the royal palace after Monet opened the gates. The crew faced opposition from Tsuru's squadron as they prepared to leave the island.
Lao G played cards with Giolla and inquired about Doflamingo's plans for Trafalgar Law. Later, when Sugar asked about Doflamingo's whereabouts, Lao G suggested he might be in his room on the fourth floor. However, Sugar revealed she had already checked there, and Lao G remarked that it was typical for Doflamingo to go off on his own, leaving the crew behind.
While playing cards, Lao G confidently affirmed Doflamingo's decision to abdicate his throne when Baby 5 inquired about Trebol. Later, at the Corrida Colosseum, Lao G represented the Donquixote Pirates in the tournament for the Mera Mera no Mi. However, he was then assigned to guard the SMILE Factory.
As he waited at the factory entrance, Lao G defeated Thunder Soldier and his group during a confrontation in the lift. When the lift reached the palace, he continued to battle, eventually being subdued by Thunder Soldier, Kabu, Rampo, Baxcon, Nubon, and Daikon.
After the exposure of Doflamingo's true nature and the activation of the "Birdcage" plan, Lao G gathered with other officers to discuss strategies. He later guarded the palace on the second level alongside Machvise, Baby 5, Gladius, and Dellinger. When Luffy's allies arrived, Lao G expressed confidence in defeating them one by one and actively participated in the skirmish, even landing a punch on Orlumbus.
In the anime, Lao G quickly dodges attacks from Elizabello II, showcasing his agility. He intervenes when Ideo attempts to surprise Gladius, landing a hit. A clash ensues involving Gladius, Sai, and Ideo. Gladius uses mines in the ground, repelling Sai and Ideo. Later, Lao G has a heated exchange with Chinjao, resulting in both delivering powerful blows that send Donquixote Family subordinates flying due to the impact.
In the ongoing battle, Lao G adopts the Yotsu no Kamae stance and launches a series of powerful attacks on Chinjao, utilizing techniques like Me no Tsukare and Kata Kori, ultimately concluding with Fushi Bushi no Itami. He emphasizes the strengthening effect of his Jio-Ken technique, claiming that the more pain he endures, the stronger he becomes. However, Chinjao engages in a verbal skirmish with his grandson, irritating Lao G. Suddenly, Lao G experiences a moment of apparent death, but Baby 5's call revives him.
Ignoring Lao G, Chinjao proceeds with a confrontation with Sai. After Sai is granted the title of Don, Lao G executes Jio-Ken Kyukyouku no Higi: Sento Ho Ken, defeating Chinjao effortlessly. Turning his attention to Sai, Lao G asserts that Dressrosa and Baby 5 belong to his master as long as he lives. However, Sai retaliates with a powerful Haki-imbued kick, splitting the ground and defeating Lao G. In defeat, Lao G curses Sai as he falls into the cracks.
His unconscious body is later brought to the palace along with other fallen officers. Giolla attempts to revive him and others using Mansherry's healing powers, but the plan is thwarted by Leo and Kabu, who defeat Giolla and save Mansherry. Following Doflamingo's defeat, Lao G and his fellow officers are arrested by the Marines.
Lao G is a stern and loyal individual who follows Doflamingo's orders without question, considering them absolute. He maintains a calm and analytical demeanor, easily deducing Doflamingo's hidden motives.
Despite his composure, Lao G exhibits a bombastic and brutal side in battle, joyfully showcasing his techniques and ruthlessly pummeling foes. In the anime, he takes pride in his skills, boasting about his superiority. Lao G has an unusual quirk, emphasizing the letter "G" in his words and mimicking it with his hands.
Cruelty is evident in his actions, as seen in his mocking of Baby 5's desperation and the ruthless disposal of Don Chinjao when he is distracted. In his old age, Lao G displays signs of senility, making mistakes like entering an elevator he just left. Despite being far-sighted and hard of hearing, these do not seem to affect his combat prowess.
Lao G is an elderly and short individual with a bald head, wrinkled skin, and squinted eyes. He lacks teeth despite being able to speak and eat. He sports a blue jumpsuit adorned with a white arrow pointing upwards and lightning bolt-like shapes on his shoulders.
The jumpsuit includes a belt with a "G" on the buckle, and he wears white gloves and boots. Underneath, he has red tights with blue arrows pointing downwards on his legs.
As a child, Lao G had a curly patch of hair on his forehead, and he wore a shirt with an upward-pointing arrow and a "G" on it, along with a sash, white gloves, and black pants. In his mid-50s, he had a bunny-eared hat, a more muscular body, a black beard shaped like a "G," and retained his teeth.
By age 60, his hair began to gray, and he wore a cap with devilish horns, gloves, a blue bodysuit with a gold matrix pattern, briefs over it, and a belt with a green "G" buckle.
As a Donquixote Pirates officer, Lao G had authority over lower-ranking members and commanded 2000 soldiers. Despite his age, he showcased significant power by frequently participating in high-caliber Corrida Colosseum tournaments. It was noted that he, along with three other officers, had a 100% chance of victory in the tournament.
Remarkably, Lao G lacked Devil Fruit powers or fish-man heritage, relying solely on his physical skill for these achievements. Doflamingo trusted him to guard the entrance to the factory, demonstrating confidence in his capabilities. In the past, Lao G used a bazooka to attack a Marine ship.
Despite his advanced age, Lao G has remarkable martial prowess, easily taking down Thunder Soldier and overpowering larger opponents effortlessly. His agility is evident in quick actions, like swiftly swatting away Kabu, a fast-moving dwarf.
Contrary to his frail appearance, Lao G has exceptional durability and endurance. He sustained no significant injuries and remained conscious after enduring a powerful kick to the head infused with Busoshoku Haki from Sai, causing the ground to split.
Even against formidable opponents like Chinjao, weakened from a previous battle with Luffy, Lao G proves to be a formidable force.
He also served as a teacher, instructing Law in hand-to-hand combat and pressure point techniques. However, signs of aging are apparent, such as shaky legs and reliance on spectacles for improved eyesight.
Lao G also struggles with hearing, not catching sounds from people right in front of him. Despite moments of weakness, he can recover rapidly, emphasizing his robust life force.
ao G is a master of Jio-Ken, a martial arts style that capitalizes on the effects of advanced age, incorporating elderly symptoms into his fighting stance. Despite his age-related weaknesses, he adeptly utilizes Jio-Ken techniques to overpower formidable opponents like Chinjao, a powerful master of Hasshoken.
One of Lao G's remarkable abilities within this style is the use of qigong. This involves cultivating and balancing spiritual energy, allowing him to store up vitality from his youth. When needed, he can unleash this stored energy, temporarily accessing the strength of his prime and mitigating the effects of aging. Interestingly, it appears that the practitioner's combat skills even improve with age.
Lao G has deep respect and unwavering loyalty to Doflamingo, addressing him as "Young Master." He considers Doflamingo's orders absolute.
Despite being an elite officer, Lao G berates Trebol for failing to protect Sugar. Their exchange reveals a level of discontent and tension among the higher-ranking members of the crew.
Lao G shows little respect for Baby 5, expressing irritation when she accepts a prank proposal from Trebol. Despite considering her "convenient" for the Donquixote Family, he claims he will "save" her during his battle with Sai.
Lao G becomes an enemy of Sai after his defeat of Chinjao. Lao G belittles Sai, referring to him as a "monkey from the Country of Kano," but is ultimately defeated by him in battle.
During their match, Lao G takes advantage of Chinjao's injuries and bewilderment to defeat him. However, Chinjao ultimately ignores Lao G, focusing on his grandson instead.
When Law was part of the crew, Lao G was unconcerned about Law being hurt by Rosinante. After Law quits the crew, Lao G considers him a traitor.
In addition to the One Piece manga and its anime adaptation, Lao G also is a supporting character in One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X.
Lao G's name is a combination of "Lao," meaning "old" in Chinese, and "G," homophonic with "jii" in Japanese, which means "grandpa" or "old man." Essentially, his name translates to "old grandpa" or "very old man."
Lao G, along with Vergo and Dellinger, is unique among the Donquixote Pirates officers for lacking a Devil Fruit power.
Unlike other officers, Lao G did not engage with any member of the Straw Hat Pirates.
Lao G has a preference for aged-meat steak as his favorite food.
