Dr. Vegapunk was recognized for his inventions in MADS and invited to Mary Geoise for an audience with the Five Elders.
Twenty years before the series, Mars, along with other Elders, spoke to Professor Clover from Ohara. Clover revealed the truth about a Great Kingdom destroyed by the World Government. Mars and the Elders immediately ordered Ohara's destruction with a Buster Call.
Less than fourteen years ago, Spandam persuaded the Elders to give him the authority to seek out the blueprints for Pluton.
A Marine reported to the Room of Authority that Shanks contacted Whitebeard. Despite the danger of the Four Emperors meeting, Mars mentioned Shanks not intend to change the world. The Elders discussed finding a replacement for Crocodile in the Seven Warlords.
The Elders learned that Admiral Aokiji had gone off on his own.
A report came in that Shanks successfully met with Whitebeard, surprising the Elders.
The Elders discussed the aftermath of the Summit War of Marineford. Mars questioned Luffy's connection to Silvers Rayleigh and talked about Blackbeard's rise to power.
Fleet Admiral Sakazuki questioned the Elders about Doflamingo using World Nobles' authority. The Elders reprimanded Sakazuki, and news came in about Monkey D. Luffy and Trafalgar Law's victory over Doflamingo.
Shanks approached the Elders during the Levely. Reluctantly allowing him to talk, they later discussed King Nefertari Cobra's request and knelt before Imu at the Empty Throne, asking for the name of the "light" to be extinguished from history.
After meeting with Imu, the Elders granted Cobra an audience at the Empty Throne. Cobra asked about his ancestor Nefertari Lili, one of the First Twenty founders, who disappeared after abdicating in Mary Geoise. He inquired about the meaning of the initial D., revealing a letter from Lili. Imu entered, shocking the Elders.
Imu talked with Cobra, and the Elders intended to execute him for seeing Imu. Sabo attacked with Hiken, and the Elders transformed into beastly forms. Cobra sacrificed himself, and the Elders noticed Wapol spying.
Following the Levely, the Five Elders discussed Sabo and Vegapunk's issues on Egghead. Imu called, wanting to test Vegapunk's Mother Flame on the Lulusia Kingdom, and Mars had no objection. They were commanded to find and seize Nefertari Vivi.
They also discussed the Raid on Onigashima, ordering the elimination of Nico Robin and planning for Marines to control Wano after the battle. They talked about the potential awakening of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, commanding Guernica to interfere in Luffy vs. Kaidou. Guernica sacrificed himself, and the Elders noted the fruit had eluded them for 800 years.
Their attempt to eliminate Luffy failed, learning later that the Gomu Gomu no Mi had awakened, and Kaidou and Big Mom fell in battle. With Wano's borders closed, the Elders called off the Marine invasion but maintained the order to capture Robin.
The Five Elders used Den Den Mushi to watch Uta's concert in Elegia. They discussed Uta being Shanks' daughter and saw her as a serious threat to the Great Pirate Era. Figuring out how to stop her rebellion, they hesitated to eliminate her due to worries about her connection to the Figarland Family.
They were also concerned about her ties to Tot Musica and couldn't take risks if she used it as a threat. The Elders stayed awake during Uta's performance by muting her songs. Rob Lucci later told them that about 70% of the world's population could be pulled into Uta World.
The Elders were shocked to witness Uta turning everyone, including Saint Charlos, into objects. Faced with too many casualties, they had to make a decision, even if a Celestial Dragon got caught in the crossfire. They saw Tot Musica, summoned by Uta, attacking Marine ships.
After Luffy and Shanks defeated Tot Musica, the Elders watched Uta release everyone from the Uta World through singing.
After receiving orders from Imu, the Elders learned that Sabo was traced to Lulusia. The Mother Flame annihilated the Lulusia Kingdom, and the Elders claimed it never existed. They also received a call from York, who reported Vegapunk's forbidden research on the Void Century. The Elders sent CP0-Agents to assassinate Vegapunk and York.
While Saturn left for Egghead, the remaining elders were contacted by York again. Overheard by Saturn and Kizaru, York questioned why they wanted to kill her, with Mars replying she was still associated with Vegapunk. York negotiated a deal, revealing she needed saving from Luffy before he kills her, shocking Mars. Luffy began speaking to the Elders, and Mars tried to gather information, but another voice cut off Luffy before he could reveal too much.
Mars, like the other Elders, values the world's balance maintained by the Three Great Powers and aims to preserve it. This involves keeping the secrets of the Void Century hidden, and he is ready to eliminate anyone studying it.
During the Ohara Incident, he acknowledged scholar Clover's achievements but ordered the killing of scholars, showing embarrassment at the decision. He views the Nefertari Family's rejection of life on Mary Geoise as treasonous.
Mars unquestionably follows orders from Imu, considering Imu a powerful "creator" shaping the world's course. He is callous, having no issue with annihilating a populous country due to signs of rebellion. Mars maintains a calm and stoic demeanor, staying composed even in the face of significant threats.
He is discerning, keeping profiles on people, understanding Shanks' contact with Whitebeard and Blackbeard's advantage in becoming an Emperor. Mars, like other Elders, has little tolerance for challenges to their authority, evident in their meeting with Marine Fleet Admiral Sakazuki.
Mars is a tall and slender elderly man with long white hair, including a mustache and goatee that extend to his upper chest. He wears a navy blue suit with a black tie, a white buttoned shirt, and navy blue pants.
As one of the Five Elders, Mars holds the highest authority in the World Government, surpassing even the World Nobles. He commands the police, the Marines, and Cipher Pol, with the Fleet Admiral unable to challenge his power.
Mars can declare a Buster Call and, along with the Elders, manipulate the media to control information, even erasing portions of history like the Void Century. The only known individual outranking the World Nobles is Imu.
Mars possesses the ability to transform into a giant bird-like creature with a distinctive ring. In this form, he easily withstands attacks, such as a point-blank blast of fire from Sabo. It's unclear if this power is related to a Zoan-type Devil Fruit. Additionally, Mars carries a flintlock.
In addition to the One Piece manga and its anime adaptation, Marcus Mars also appears in the following games as a non-playable character:
One Piece: Grand Battle! 3
One Piece: Grand Battle! Rush!
One Piece Odyssey
Mars' name is inspired by the fourth planet in the Solar System, maintaining the planet-themed names of the Five Elders.
His surname, Marcus, is believed to originate from the Roman god of war, Mars, indicating a shared origin for both parts of his name.
Mars' appearance, particularly his beard, may be influenced by Itagaki Taisuke, a Meiji-era Japanese politician who played a key role in founding the Freedom And People's Rights Movement and was an early figure in Japanese political parties.
