Mary Geoise in One Piece

The Holy Land of Mary Geoise is the capital of the World Government's highest authorities, including Imu (from behind the scenes), the Five Elders, the World Nobles, and Commander-in-Chief Kong. It also hosts the Levely, a gathering of royalty from various countries linked with the World Government that takes place every four years.

It is situated on the Red Line at the opposite side of the world from Reverse Mountain and serves as the official route for people to cross between the two halves of the Grand Line. Only those acting within the law are permitted passage; pirates and other criminals must go under the Red Line through Fish-Man Island to cross it.

There have been infamous people who have either purposefully decided to ignore this policy or have been temporarily excused from the law despite the center of the world being declared to be hostile to any criminals who try to oppose or bargain with the World Government.

History of Mary Geoise

About 800 years ago, after the World Government was established, 19 of the 20 kings relocated to Mary Geoise from their respective kingdoms. The Nefertari Family from Arabasta were the only ones who chose to remain in their kingdom.

Some time later, about 400 years ago, the Lvneel Kingdom’s king had to take permission from Mary Geoise to cross the Grand Line.

200 years ago, a gigantic robot that was 700 years old at the time (now 900 years old) climbed the Red Line and attacked Mary Geoise but ran out of power before it could cause any harm. Nobody could ever find out where it came from and its purpose was not determined either. After the attack, the government ordered for it to be destroyed but because the prehistoric scientists were so curious, they decided to hide it away from the World Government, who were kept in the dark of the robot’s existence.

33 years ago, a branch of the Donquixote Family fled Mary Geoise and gave up their World Noble status in order to live with common people. As a result, they were not allowed to return even when Donquixote Homing asked to have his wife and kids taken back in. Doflamingo, Homing’s son, attempted to travel back to Mary Geoise two years later with his father’s head in order to be restored as a World Noble but he was turned down. Doflamingo then had to make a life-saving escape from Mary Geoise after learning about its national treasure.

15 years ago, Fisher Tiger climbed the Red Line with his bare hands and attacked Mary Geoise which allowed all of the Celestial Dragon’s slaves to be set free. He did so in order to free any Fish-Men who were held slaves. Among those slaves were some Kuja including Boa Hancock, Boa Marigold, and Boa Sandersonia.

14 years ago, Spandam influenced the Five Elders to grant him permission to search for the Ancient Weapons.

8 years ago, Levely was held in Mary Geoise to talk about the rise of Dragon, the Leader of the Revolutionary Army. The gathering was significant for an encounter between Arabasta princess Nefertari Vivi and Drum ruler Wapol, which led Dalton, a fellow Drum soldier, to realize his king’s true nature.

During the Jaya Arc, the Seven Warlords of the Sea and Marines met here to discuss Crocodile's replacement. Laffitte of the Blackbeard Pirates interrupted the court during the discussion and argued that Marshall D. Teach, his captain, should succeed as the new Warlord of the Sea.

Two years ago from the current timeline, after the Summit War of Marineford, Garp went to Kong at his office in Mary Geoise and announced his resignation from the Marines, despite Kong’s efforts to stop him. After two weeks, Sengoku did the same thing.

In the current timeline, Doflamingo misled the world into believing that he had lost his throne to Dressrosa and the Warlord of the Sea title. Fleet Admiral Sakazuki met with the Five Elders in Mary Geoise and got into a discussion regarding Doflamingo’s behavior in keeping the government in the dark about his defeat.

Sometime later, the Levely brought together the royal families of the world at Mary Geoise. They arrived at the Socializing Plaza, where Saint Carlos and CP0 were stopped by Saint Mjosgard in their effort to enslave the Mermaid Princess Shirahoshi.

At the same time, members of the Revolutionary Army reached there secretly in order to declare war on the World Nobles. Admiral Fujitora had also arrived in the city. Also, the Emperor Shanks made his way to the Room of Authority to discuss a specific pirate with the Five Elders. Jewelry Bonney sneaked into the Domain of Gods by infiltrating Mary Geoise. The Five Elders asked Im about who should be erased from history when the Levely first started.

Geography of Mary Geoise

Mary Geoise’s general architecture is in the European style of the 18th and 19th centuries, which is kept in pristine shape since the World Nobles, the world’s highest social class, reside here. It is surrounded by clouds and fog because it is located extremely high above the sea level. There are artificially grown trees and rivers all around the city, but no one knows where the water comes from. The city’s pathways, Travelators, are constantly being pushed from below by slave laborers.

Bondolas are used to transport people from the Red Port to Mary Geoise. They reach the city at the bottom of a series of steep staircases built into the Red Line that have statues of unknown people lining their sides.

Red Ports, Pangaea Castle, and the Domain of the Gods, where the World Nobles reside, are all connected by a major crossroads that forms the center of the city. There is a large gate in each of the four directions, which is a component of the castle wall.

Locations at Mary Geoise

There are various locations that are spread across the Holy Land of Mary Geoise. The following of those have been revealed so far:

Pangaea Castle

The World Government gathers and conducts business in the enormous castle known as the Pangaea castle. This is also the place where Levely is conducted. The castle appears to hold at least six floors in addition to other buildings and towers on top.

A squad of soldiers in armor stands guard at the castle’s main entrance. The World Government’s emblem is plastered above the entrance gate and a fortified wall surrounds the castle.

Empty Throne

A historical seat called the Empty Throne can be seen inside Pangaea Castle on Mary Geoise. According to some legend, it is located right in the middle of the globe.

It is occupied by the mysterious ruler, Im, whose authority exceeds that of the Five Elders, despite the fact that it is publicly declared to have no occupant in order to preserve peace and equality amongst nations.

Domain of the Gods

The World Nobles and their slaves live in the Domain of the Gods. This town is largely decorated with fountains and trees in the streets.

However, it takes up the majority of Mary Geoise as it is incredibly big. It also appears like the large mansions are the only type of homes in Mary Geoise.

Celestial Dragon Gate

This is one of three gates outside the Pangaea Castle that are heavily guarded. It connects the entrance to the Domain of the Gods and the Pangaea Castle.

It is protected by multiple World Government workers who forbid anyone other than the World Nobles from entering. The “Hoof of the Flying Dragon” insignia is visible above the entryway of the big gate.

Artifacts of Mary Geoise

A national treasure that Donquixote Doflamingo claimed may shake the world is hidden someplace within the Pangaea Castle. He said that if he had achieved immortality, he could have used the treasure to establish world dominance. The treasure’s existence has remained a closely-guarded secret so far.

Inhabitants of Mary Geoise

The Five Elders and Commander-in-Chief Kong, the senior officials in the World Government reside in Mary Geoise. The World Nobles, the descendants of the 19 kings who settled here after establishing the World Government, also call Mary Geoise their home. They enjoy a life of luxury and are exempted by the law.

It is the only place where the World Nobles do not breathe air through the resin bubbles over their heads. Although many slaves escaped during the Fisher Tiger raid on the city more than ten years ago, they are looked after by slaves that they buy from outside Mary Geoise. Once someone withdraws from their World Noble title, they are barred from ever returning to Mary Geoise, and from that point on, they are regarded as commoners.

Trivia

Mary Geoise may have been named after the word bourgeoisie. Technically, rather than referring to the entire bourgeoisie, the spelling Geoise would exclusively relate to a female member of the class.

Translation and Dub Differences

The name of this place was only ever shown in the manga for the most of the time using the katakana character, which is roughly pronounced Marjoa. As a result, it was phonetically romanized in almost all fan and professional translations; the Viz manga used Mariejoa while the Funimation anime used Mariejois. It's interesting that these have been maintained in each translation even after Mary Geoise's romanization by Eiichiro Oda was established in Chapter 906.

The game Grand Batlle! Rush! and its original sequel Grand Adventure, localised by 4Kids Entertainment, changed its name to Eden Rock and reframed it as a Navy Headquarters training area because the modern anime adaptation had not mentioned it in any way.
