Luffy was born in Foosha Village to Monkey D. Dragon and an unknown woman. His father left him in the care of his grandfather, Garp, who put him through harsh training to make him stronger, including throwing him into the wild and tying him to a balloon.
At age six, Luffy met Shanks and the Red Hair Pirates, who were staying in Foosha Village. Wanting to prove himself as a pirate, Luffy stabbed himself under his eye. He tried to join Shanks' crew but was rejected. One day, he unknowingly ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi, gaining rubber-like abilities but losing the ability to swim.
Luffy later confronted the mountain bandit Higuma, who kidnapped him and took him out to sea. A Sea King attacked, eating Higuma, but before it could get Luffy, Shanks saved him, losing his left arm in the process. Before leaving, Shanks gave Luffy his straw hat, telling him to return it when he became a great pirate.
After the Red Hair Pirates left, Garp placed Luffy in the care of mountain bandit Curly Dadan. There, he met Ace, who initially ignored him. Luffy kept following Ace until he found him with another boy, Sabo. At first, they considered killing Luffy to keep their stolen treasure a secret, but after saving him from the Bluejam Pirates, they became close friends. They shared their dreams of becoming pirates and exchanged sake cups to become sworn brothers.
Their adventures were cut short when Sabo’s noble family forced him to return home. Soon after, the Bluejam Pirates captured Luffy and Ace, tying them up in Gray Terminal, which was then set on fire. Ace knocked out the pirates with Supreme King Haki, and the Dadan Family rescued them. However, Sabo later tried to set sail but was seemingly killed by a World Noble, leaving Luffy and Ace heartbroken.
Determined to grow stronger, Luffy trained with Ace for seven years, mastering his Devil Fruit powers. At 14, he bid farewell to Ace as he set sail. Luffy continued training for another three years before finally leaving home to become a pirate at 17. Before departing, he defeated the Lord of the Coast with Gomu Gomu no Pistol and set off, dreaming of gathering a crew, raising a Jolly Roger, and becoming the Pirate King.
Luffy's voyage began when his ship was pulled into a whirlpool. He survived by hiding in a barrel, which washed ashore on Goat Island. Koby, a cabin boy for the Alvida Pirates, rolled the barrel into a storehouse, where Luffy accidentally knocked out some pirates upon emerging. Koby revealed he was forced to work for Alvida and wanted to escape. When Alvida confronted them, Koby finally stood up to her, and Luffy defeated her with a single punch. He then took a boat with Koby and set sail.
As they traveled, Luffy told Koby he planned to form a crew, starting with the bounty hunter Roronoa Zoro. They arrived at Shells Town, where Zoro was imprisoned by the Marines under Captain Morgan. Luffy saw a girl named Rika give Zoro food, but Morgan’s son, Helmeppo, threw her over a wall. Luffy caught her and later learned Zoro had been captured for protecting her. When Helmeppo announced that Zoro would be executed, Luffy punched him and went to free Zoro.
Luffy found out that Zoro’s swords had been taken by the Marines, so he searched for them. While causing chaos at the Marine base, he grabbed Helmeppo and forced him to reveal where the swords were. Luffy then rushed outside, blocking Marine bullets with his rubber body and handing Zoro his weapons. Zoro agreed to join Luffy if they survived the fight. Together, they defeated Morgan, and the Marines, instead of retaliating, cheered his downfall.
Later, as Luffy and Zoro prepared to leave, the Marines told Koby he could not go with them. To help Koby prove his independence, Luffy provoked him into a fight. This convinced the Marines to accept Koby, and as Luffy and Zoro set sail, Koby and the Marines saluted them in gratitude.
As Luffy and Zoro sailed toward the Grand Line, they realized neither of them could navigate. Hungry, Luffy tried to catch a bird, but it carried him away and dropped him into Orange Town, where he landed between a woman and some Buggy Pirates. The woman, Nami, pretended Luffy was her boss to escape the pirates.
Luffy quickly defeated them after they knocked off his hat. Nami introduced herself as a thief who stole from pirates and invited Luffy to join her, but he refused. Instead, Luffy asked Nami to join his crew when he learned she was a skilled navigator, but she hated pirates. She tricked him into meeting Captain Buggy and turned him in, getting him locked in a cage.
Buggy planned to execute Luffy with a powerful cannonball, but Nami refused to fire it and turned against the Buggy Pirates. Just as they attacked her, Zoro arrived and fought Buggy, but Buggy revealed he had eaten the Bara Bara no Mi, allowing him to split his body into pieces. Zoro was injured, and Buggy sent a knife toward Luffy, but Luffy caught and broke it with his teeth. Zoro and Nami then flipped the cannon around and blasted the Buggy Pirates.
Zoro dragged Luffy’s cage away, stopping in front of a pet store guarded by a dog named Chouchou. Nami found them and gave Luffy the key, but Chouchou swallowed it. Just then, Buggy’s minion, Mohji, arrived with his lion, Richie, who destroyed Luffy’s cage. The lion knocked Luffy through a house, but he was unharmed. When Luffy returned, he saw that Mohji had burned down the pet store. Furious, Luffy easily defeated Mohji and Richie, then gave Chouchou back some pet food.
The town’s mayor, Boodle, tried to fight Buggy but was outmatched. Luffy knocked him out to keep him safe and then faced Buggy. When Buggy fired a cannonball at Luffy, he used his rubber powers to send it back, destroying the tavern. As Zoro fought Buggy’s swordsman, Cabaji, Luffy kept Buggy from interfering, allowing Zoro to win.
Luffy then battled Buggy, dodging his attacks and getting angry when Buggy damaged his straw hat. Buggy recognized the hat from his past with Shanks, but Luffy punched him and told him not to compare himself to Shanks.
When Buggy tried to attack Nami, Luffy kicked him in the groin. Buggy split his body into tiny pieces to avoid attacks, but Luffy tricked him by tickling his feet, and Nami tied up his missing body parts. Luffy then punched Buggy with Gomu Gomu no Bazooka, sending him flying off the island.
With Buggy gone, Nami agreed to join the crew, and they gathered up Buggy’s treasure. However, the townspeople, thinking Luffy had hurt Boodle, chased after them. Chouchou stopped the crowd, and Luffy left the treasure behind to help rebuild the town. As they sailed away, Boodle thanked them. Later, Nami got mad when she realized Luffy had given up the treasure but ended up laughing.
After Nami fixed Luffy’s straw hat, the crew spotted an island and rowed toward it despite Nami’s protests. On the island, Luffy and Nami encountered strange animal hybrids and met Gaimon, a man stuck in a treasure chest. He warned them about the dangers of the Grand Line and shared his story of being abandoned by his crew while searching for treasure.
Luffy climbed a cliff to check on the treasure but found the chests empty. He invited Gaimon to join his crew, but Gaimon chose to stay and protect the island’s animals. The Straw Hats then sailed away.
Nami suggested they find a real ship and more crewmates before heading to the Grand Line, so they set course for Syrup Village. Upon arrival, they met Usopp, a liar who claimed to have 80 million men. He led them to a restaurant and told them that Kaya, a wealthy but sickly girl, might have a ship for them. Usopp wanted to join their crew as captain, but they declined.
Usopp visited Kaya while the Straw Hats met his young crewmates, who revealed that Usopp cheered Kaya up with his tall tales. Luffy decided to ask Kaya for a ship and snuck into her mansion, but her butler, Klahadore, threw them out and insulted Usopp for being a pirate’s son. Luffy then remembered hearing about Usopp’s father, Yasopp.
Later, Luffy and Usopp overheard Klahadore plotting with Jango, a hypnotist, to kill Kaya and take her fortune. They discovered Klahadore was actually the pirate Kuro, leader of the Black Cat Pirates. When Luffy shouted at them, Jango hypnotized him to sleep, causing him to fall off a cliff. Thinking he was dead, Kuro and Jango left.
Zoro, Nami, and Usopp’s crewmates found Luffy, who told them about Kuro’s plan. Usopp tried warning the villagers but instead lied that there was no attack to avoid scaring them. That night, Usopp and the Straw Hats prepared to defend the village, setting traps on the main path. However, the pirates arrived from the opposite shore, and while running to stop them, Luffy got lost. Eventually, he and Zoro made it to the battle and fought off the Black Cat Pirates.
Jango hypnotized the pirates to become stronger, but Luffy also fell under the spell and attacked them with immense strength. He even tore off their ship’s mast to use as a weapon before Jango hypnotized him to sleep again. Nami woke him up, and he rejoined the battle just as Kuro arrived. Kaya confronted Kuro, and when Kuro attacked Usopp, Luffy punched him away.
Luffy fought Kuro, who used his speed to dodge attacks and land hits. However, Luffy countered by ripping off Kuro’s Cat Claws and started keeping up with his movements. Kuro then unleashed his ultimate attack, slashing wildly and even hitting his own crew. Luffy managed to grab him, slam him to the ground, and defeat him with a powerful headbutt.
After Kuro was defeated, his crew fled. Luffy collapsed from blood loss but was caught by Nami. Later, Kaya thanked them and gifted them a ship, the Going Merry. Usopp initially planned to leave on his own, but the Straw Hats invited him to join their crew. Now a crew of four, they set sail on the Going Merry, celebrating their new adventure.
As the Straw Hats sailed on their new ship, Luffy designed a Jolly Roger, but Usopp created the final version due to Luffy’s poor drawing skills. Luffy then tried and failed to hit a distant rock with the ship’s cannon, while Usopp hit it perfectly, making him the crew’s sniper.
Later, bounty hunter Johnny arrived on board and attacked Luffy for accidentally hitting the rock he was resting on. However, he stopped when he saw Zoro, whom he knew from the past. Johnny's partner, Yosaku, was sick, but Nami recognized it as scurvy and gave him lime juice to recover. The crew then decided they needed a cook before heading to the Grand Line, and Johnny suggested the floating restaurant Baratie.
After a few days, they reached Baratie, where Marine Lieutenant Fullbody attacked them with a cannonball. Luffy deflected it but accidentally hit the restaurant. As punishment, head chef Zeff made Luffy work as a chore boy. Inside, they saw sous chef Sanji beating up Fullbody for wasting food. A starving pirate named Gin was thrown out for not having money, but Sanji later fed him in secret. Impressed, Luffy tried to recruit him, but Sanji refused.
Two days later, Gin returned with his captain, Don Krieg, who was also starving. Sanji fed him, but once recovered, Krieg attacked and planned to take over the restaurant. Meanwhile, Nami stole the crew’s ship and treasure, sailing away. Luffy sent Zoro, Usopp, Johnny, and Yosaku to chase her, staying behind to fight Krieg and recruit Sanji.
Luffy fought Krieg’s men, but Krieg struck him with a spiked ball. As Sanji fought Pearl, another of Krieg’s men, Gin took Zeff hostage, forcing Sanji to stop fighting. Luffy then smashed part of the restaurant to prevent Krieg from taking it. Gin defeated Pearl and fought Sanji but couldn’t bring himself to kill him. Angered, Krieg fired a poison gas cannonball at Gin, but Luffy saved him with a gas mask. However, Gin sacrificed himself by giving his mask to Luffy.
Furious, Luffy charged at Krieg, breaking through his spiked armor with his fists. Krieg countered with explosive attacks but was eventually defeated when Luffy launched him into the deck with a powerful blow. Exhausted, Luffy fell into the sea but was saved by Sanji.
After recovering, Luffy asked Sanji to join his crew, but Sanji hesitated. The Baratie cooks secretly wanted him to go, and after an emotional farewell with Zeff, Sanji finally agreed. Yosaku then arrived with news about Nami’s location, and Luffy and Sanji set off together to find her.
As Luffy, Sanji, and Yosaku sailed to find Nami, Yosaku explained the Seven Warlords of the Sea and how one of them, Jinbe, had unleashed the fish-man Arlong into the East Blue. He suspected that Nami had gone to Arlong Park. Along the way, a giant sea cow named Momoo attacked them, but Luffy and Sanji quickly defeated it. They then made Momoo pull their ship toward Arlong Park.
When they arrived, their ship crashed into Zoro, and Johnny ran up, claiming Nami had killed Usopp. Luffy didn’t believe it, and when Nami arrived, she confirmed the story and told them to leave. Usopp later showed up alive and revealed that Nami had only faked his death. Nami’s sister, Nojiko, offered to explain why Nami was with Arlong, but Luffy wasn’t interested and walked away.
In Cocoyasi Village, Luffy saw Marines raiding Nami’s home, taking all the money she had saved. Nami tried to stop them but failed. Devastated, she began stabbing her Arlong Pirates tattoo, and Luffy stopped her. She finally broke down and asked for his help. Luffy put his hat on her head and marched to Arlong Park with Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp. He kicked down the gate and challenged Arlong.
Luffy fought off Arlong’s men and even sent Momoo flying, but he got stuck in concrete and was thrown into the water. Nojiko and Genzo rescued him, and Sanji freed him. Once back, Luffy fought Arlong, countering his powerful bites and sword attacks.
Their battle led them to a room where Nami had spent years drawing sea charts for Arlong. Enraged, Luffy destroyed everything inside. He then used Gomu Gomu no Battle Axe to smash Arlong through the floor, collapsing the entire building and defeating him.
With Arlong defeated, the villagers were free. When Marine Captain Nezumi arrived to take credit and steal Arlong’s money, Luffy and his crew beat him up, and he swore revenge. The villagers celebrated all night, and Genzo warned Luffy to keep Nami happy. The next day, as the crew prepared to leave, Nami ran through the crowd, jumped aboard the ship, and revealed she had stolen from the villagers one last time. Luffy just laughed as they set sail.
As the Straw Hats sailed, Nami bought a newspaper and discovered that Luffy had received a 30,000,000 berries bounty. Deciding it was time to enter the Grand Line, they headed to Loguetown, the site of the Pirate King Gold Roger’s execution. When they arrived, Luffy went to see the execution platform.
At the platform, Luffy was confronted by Alvida, who had changed after eating a Devil Fruit. She had teamed up with Buggy, and together they captured Luffy, planning to execute him. With Buggy’s sword about to strike, Luffy smiled and accepted his fate. However, lightning suddenly struck, destroying the platform and saving him. Zoro and Sanji rushed in, grabbed Luffy, and fled as Marines chased them.
On their way back, Zoro fought Tashigi, while Luffy was captured by Marine Captain Smoker. Luffy was unable to fight back against Smoker’s smoke powers, but a mysterious man named Dragon appeared and saved him. A powerful windstorm helped the crew escape to their ship.
As they sailed into a storm, Nami guided them toward the Grand Line’s entrance. To mark the moment, Sanji brought out a barrel, and each Straw Hat declared their dream while placing a foot on it. With their sights set on adventure, they smashed the barrel and sailed toward the Grand Line.
As the Straw Hats sailed up Reverse Mountain, they encountered a massive whale blocking their path. Luffy stopped the ship just in time but broke his favorite seat in the process. Angry, he punched the whale’s eye. In response, the whale swallowed the Going Merry, but Luffy managed to grab onto its tooth and climb onto its back. While searching for a way to free his crew, he found a hatch leading inside.
Inside the whale, Luffy reunited with his crew and met an old man named Crocus. He also encountered two strangers, Miss Wednesday and Mr. 9, who were trying to kill the whale. Seeing Crocus protect the whale, Luffy took down the attackers. Crocus then led the crew safely out through a canal inside the whale.
At a nearby cape, Crocus explained that the whale, Laboon, had been waiting for over 50 years for a pirate crew that abandoned him. Heartbroken, Laboon was ramming into the Red Line in frustration. To help, Luffy challenged Laboon to a fight, stopping midway to promise they would finish it after he sailed the Grand Line. He then painted his Jolly Roger on Laboon’s scars as a symbol of their promise.
The crew soon realized their compass wouldn’t work in the Grand Line. Crocus explained they needed a Log Pose and gave them one after Luffy accidentally broke the first one. The two strangers from earlier then asked for a ride to Whisky Peak, an island along the crew’s route. Though suspicious, the Straw Hats agreed and set sail, leaving Laboon with the promise to return.
When the Straw Hats arrived at Whisky Peak, they were warmly welcomed by the townspeople and treated to a grand feast. Luffy ate more than anyone and eventually passed out from all the excitement.
However, when he woke up, he was shocked to find the townspeople beaten up. He learned that Zoro was responsible and, thinking Zoro attacked them out of ungratefulness, Luffy started fighting him. They were so focused on their battle that they easily defeated two intruders, Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine, without even realizing it. Nami finally stepped in and stopped their fight.
Luffy then learned the truth—Whisky Peak was actually a trap, and the townspeople were Baroque Works agents. Zoro had taken them down to protect the crew. He also discovered that Miss Wednesday was actually Princess Vivi of Arabasta, who was trying to stop Baroque Works from taking over her kingdom. The organization was led by Crocodile, one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea.
Deciding to help Vivi, the crew planned to take her and her pet duck, Karoo, to Arabasta while her guardian Igaram created a diversion. However, Igaram’s ship was suddenly blown up. Soon after, Crocodile’s partner, Miss All Sunday, appeared on their ship. She didn’t attack but instead offered them an alternate route, which Luffy refused.
With their new mission to help Vivi, the Straw Hats set sail for their next destination—Little Garden.
The Straw Hats arrived at Little Garden, a prehistoric island filled with dinosaurs. Excited by the adventure, Luffy explored the island with Vivi and Karoo. Meanwhile, Zoro and the others met a giant named Brogy, while Luffy met another giant, Dorry. The two giants had been dueling for 100 years to settle a dispute, with each battle signaled by a volcanic eruption. Luffy was amazed by their fight.
During their stay, Dorry drank some sake that suddenly exploded. Since the sake came from the Straw Hats' ship, Dorry suspected them of sabotage and attacked Luffy. Luffy managed to knock Dorry down but realized someone else was behind the incident. Before he could warn Dorry, the volcano erupted again, and the giant resumed his duel. This time, Brogy won easily, as Dorry was weakened from the explosion.
Luffy soon discovered the culprits—Baroque Works agents Mr. 5 and Miss Valentine. They attacked Luffy, Vivi, and Usopp, leaving them temporarily out of action. When they recovered, they rushed to save their captured friends, who were being turned into wax statues by another agent, Mr. 3. Luffy battled Mr. 3 while the others fought the remaining enemies. With Usopp’s help, Luffy freed his friends and defeated Mr. 3.
Dorry survived the fight, having only passed out from his wounds. As the crew rested, Sanji returned with good news—he tricked Crocodile into believing they were dead and obtained an Eternal Pose to Arabasta. With this, the Straw Hats bid farewell to the giants. As they set sail, the giants helped them escape by attacking a massive goldfish blocking their way, allowing the crew to continue their journey toward Arabasta.
When Nami fell seriously ill, the Straw Hats changed course to find a doctor. On the way, they were attacked by Wapol, but Luffy easily knocked him off their ship. They then arrived at Drum Island, a snowy land known for its medicine. The villagers were hesitant to help until Vivi pleaded for aid. Dalton, the island's leader, directed them to Dr. Kureha, the only doctor left, who lived in a castle atop a tall mountain. Luffy and Sanji carried Nami up the mountain while Zoro and Karoo stayed behind.
During their climb, they encountered man-eating rabbits called Lapahns, fought through an avalanche, and faced more dangers. Sanji was knocked unconscious while protecting Luffy and Nami. Later, Wapol and his men attacked, but the Lapahns helped Luffy as repayment for saving one of them. Eventually, Luffy reached the castle, where Chopper, a reindeer doctor, rescued them and took them to Dr. Kureha.
When Luffy and Sanji woke up, they met Chopper and were amazed by his ability to transform. Luffy immediately wanted him to join the crew, but Chopper refused. Soon, Wapol arrived at the castle, threatening to reclaim his kingdom.
Luffy punched him, starting a battle. While Chopper fought Wapol’s men, Luffy took on Wapol. Wapol tried to power up by eating weapons, but Nami had stolen the key to the armory. He fled to the castle roof, attempting one final attack, but Luffy easily defeated him, sending him flying far away.
With Wapol gone, Dalton thanked Luffy and Chopper. After some convincing, Chopper decided to join the crew with Dr. Kureha’s blessing. As they left, Kureha released pink snow into the sky as a tribute to her late friend, Dr. Hiriluk. The Straw Hats welcomed Chopper aboard and set sail for Arabasta.
With Chopper now part of the crew, the Straw Hats continued their journey to Arabasta with Vivi and Karoo. While fishing near an undersea volcano, they accidentally caught Mr. 2 Bon Kurei, a flamboyant man with the power to change his appearance using the Mane Mane no Mi.
They quickly became friends, but when his crew arrived, they realized he was an enemy. Luckily, he didn’t know who they were either. To prepare for a future encounter, they wrapped X-shaped bandages on their wrists to recognize each other.
Arriving at the port of Nanohana, Luffy ran off in search of food and accidentally knocked two men through a restaurant wall—one of them being Smoker. Realizing his mistake, Luffy ran as Smoker chased him. However, he was saved by the other man he hit—his older brother, Ace.
Back on the ship, Luffy introduced Ace to the crew. Ace briefly invited Luffy to join the Whitebeard Pirates, but Luffy refused, saying he wanted to become Pirate King himself. Before leaving, Ace gave Luffy a special piece of paper to find him later and helped by defeating some Baroque Works agents.
The crew then crossed the Sandora River and headed for Yuba to find the rebel leader, Koza. Along the way, Luffy befriended a group of Kung-Fu Dugongs and acquired a new travel companion, a camel named Matsuge. They eventually reached Yuba, only to find it abandoned due to sandstorms, with only an old man named Toto remaining. He was an old friend of Vivi’s and offered them shelter. That night, Luffy tried to help Toto dig for water, and though he wasn’t very skilled, he managed to assist.
The next morning, before heading to Katorea where the rebels had moved, Luffy suddenly declared that he was quitting. Confused, his crew demanded an explanation. Luffy argued that stopping the rebels wouldn’t end the conflict—defeating Crocodile was the only solution. This led to an argument with Vivi, who insisted on protecting everyone herself. Luffy reminded her that they were her friends and would fight alongside her. Moved to tears, Vivi told them where to find Crocodile—Rainbase.
Determined, the crew traveled to Rainbase, but after their long journey through the desert, Luffy and Usopp ran ahead to find water. Instead, they ran straight into Smoker and Tashigi, triggering another chase through the city. Eventually, the crew reached Crocodile’s casino, Rain Dinners, but they entered without Vivi, making it difficult to identify Crocodile.
Inside, Smoker caught up to them, and as they tried to escape, they fell into a trap. They landed in a seastone cage, unable to use their powers, and were confronted by Crocodile himself. He revealed his Devil Fruit abilities and his master plan to take over Arabasta. Vivi was also captured and forced into a cruel game. Trapped and powerless, the Straw Hats could only watch as Crocodile’s plan unfolded.
Luffy and his crew needed to reach Alubarna quickly to stop the war, but they were trapped in a cage. Crocodile threw the key into a pit where a Bananawani ate it, then started flooding the room. He challenged Vivi to either save her friends or get to Alubarna in time. While trapped, Luffy learned Crocodile was behind Yuba’s sandstorms, fueling his anger.
Just when things seemed hopeless, Sanji contacted them via Den Den Mushi. He and Chopper were still free. Sanji arrived soon after, using Mr. 3’s wax powers to free Luffy and the others. As they escaped, Luffy made Zoro save Smoker, who let them go in return. They then rode a giant crab named Hasami toward Alubarna, but Crocodile grabbed Vivi. Luffy freed her and stayed behind to fight Crocodile alone.
Despite his best efforts, Luffy couldn’t land a hit on Crocodile. The Warlord dried out Luffy’s arm, but he restored it with water from Toto. Crocodile then sent a massive sandstorm toward Yuba. Enraged, Luffy tried to stop him but was severely wounded and buried in the sand. However, Nico Robin (Miss All Sunday) saved him and left him with Pell.
After recovering, Luffy flew with Pell to Alubarna, arriving just in time to save Vivi from falling off the palace walls. Armed with the knowledge that water negated Crocodile’s powers, Luffy used a new tactic: he drank all his water, becoming “Mizu Luffy.” This allowed him to land hits, but Crocodile soon overpowered him again. Left for dead once more, Luffy was revived by a stray water bubble and chased after Crocodile into the royal tomb.
Despite his injuries, Luffy fought Crocodile for the final time. He used his own blood to counter Crocodile’s sand powers and endured a poison attack. Summoning all his strength, he launched himself into the air and delivered a devastating series of punches, breaking through bedrock and defeating Crocodile at last. He was then rescued by King Cobra and Nico Robin, who gave him an antidote to the poison.
The crew stayed as honored guests in Arabasta for three days but left before the Marines could catch them. Vivi had a choice to join them and promised to decide by noon the next day. As they set sail, the Marines surrounded them, but Mr. 2 sacrificed himself to help them escape.
At the rendezvous point, Vivi arrived but chose to stay in Arabasta. She asked if they would still accept her as a friend, and though the crew couldn’t answer aloud, they silently showed their matching X marks as a sign of friendship before sailing away.
Just as they were processing Vivi’s departure, Nico Robin appeared on their ship. She asked to join the crew, saying Luffy had to take responsibility for saving her life. Without hesitation, Luffy welcomed her aboard, surprising everyone.
With that, the Straw Hats set off on their next adventure.
After leaving Arabasta, Luffy and his crew saw a massive ship fall from the sky. With Nico Robin’s help, they discovered a map pointing to Skypiea, an island in the sky.
To learn more, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji explored the sunken ship using Usopp’s diving suits. However, their search was interrupted by a group of treasure hunters led by Masira. After escaping them and encountering mysterious giant shadows in the ocean, Robin found an Eternal Pose leading to Jaya, an island where they might find more information.
Upon reaching Jaya’s Mock Town, a lawless pirate haven, Luffy, Zoro, and Nami searched for clues. In a bar, they met Bellamy, a cocky pirate who mocked them for believing in Skypiea. Luffy and Zoro refused to fight back, earning the admiration of an old pirate named Mont Blanc Cricket, who knew about Skypiea.
Traveling to Cricket’s home, they learned he was searching for proof that his ancestor, Mont Blanc Noland, was not a liar about the legendary Sky Island. Cricket agreed to help them reach Skypiea but told them they needed a South Bird to find a Knock Up Stream, a powerful underwater current that would launch them into the sky.
After capturing the South Bird, Luffy and his crew returned to find Cricket and his allies, Masira and Shoujou, beaten and robbed by Bellamy. Furious, Luffy went to Mock Town and defeated Bellamy with a single punch, retrieving Cricket’s stolen gold.
With their ship modified for the journey, the Straw Hats set sail with Masira and Shoujou guiding them to the Knock Up Stream. As they waited, they encountered the pirate from the bar again, who revealed Luffy and Zoro’s new bounties. Before he could attack, the Knock Up Stream erupted, launching the Going Merry into the sky and sending the crew on their next adventure—Skypiea.
After passing through the clouds, the crew found themselves floating in the sky. Usopp decided to swim in the clouds but started falling toward the Blue Sea. Luffy stretched his arm to grab him, and Robin used her powers to help pull him back up. A giant octopus followed Usopp, but Zoro quickly defeated it. Suddenly, a masked warrior attacked Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji, but they were saved by "Knight of the Sky" Gan Fall, who gave them a whistle to call him if needed.
The crew continued their journey and reached Heaven’s Gate, where they were asked to pay an entry fee of one billion extols. Since they only had belly, they were allowed to pass without paying. Their ship was then carried by Speedy Shrimp to Skypiea. Upon arriving at Angel Island, they met Conis and her father, Pagaya, who introduced them to Dials, a unique Skypiean technology. Luffy tried riding a waver but lost control, while Nami handled it with ease.
While exploring, Nami accidentally went near Upper Yard, the forbidden land ruled by "God" Enel. The crew planned to check on her, but before they could leave, Skypiea’s law enforcers, the White Berets, charged them with illegal entry and demanded a massive fine.
When Nami returned and learned about this, she hit their leader, McKinley, which increased their punishment to execution. Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji fought the White Berets and defeated them, but this made them targets of Enel’s priests.
As they prepared to leave, Speedy Shrimp suddenly captured their ship along with some crewmates. Pagaya revealed that they were taken to the Sacrificial Altar in Upper Yard, and it was up to Luffy, Usopp, and Sanji to rescue them.
Conis guided them to a boat but then confessed that she was forced to summon the Speedy Shrimp under Enel’s orders. Before they could react, Enel struck her location with a lightning bolt, but Luffy saved her just in time. Gan Fall then flew in and took Conis to safety while the trio sailed toward Upper Yard.
As they entered the jungle, they faced deadly traps and monsters before reaching four different trials. Luffy chose the Ordeal of Balls, thinking it sounded fun. There, they encountered Satori, one of Enel’s priests, who attacked them with surprise-filled cloud balls. Satori’s abilities and powerful Impact Dial overwhelmed them, but Luffy eventually grabbed him, allowing Sanji to land a strong kick and defeat him.
Afterward, they found their boat and escaped the forest, though they crashed into trees along the way. Later, they saw Shandia warriors, led by Wyper, attacking Upper Yard. Wyper fired at them, but Luffy deflected the attack. He warned them to stay out of trouble before leaving.
By sunset, the trio reached the Sacrificial Altar and reunited with their crew. They tended to the injured Gan Fall and decided to camp overnight. While discussing Noland’s logbook, they realized the lost city of gold was hidden in Upper Yard. Ignoring Robin and Nami’s warnings about attracting enemies, they built a giant bonfire and celebrated before resting for the night.
The next morning, Usopp noticed that the Going Merry had been mysteriously repaired overnight, which he believed was the work of a spirit. The crew then split into two teams to explore the lost city. Luffy, Zoro, Chopper, and Robin formed the "Explore Team" and set off on foot.
Their journey was interrupted by a giant snake named Nola, which attacked them and scattered the group. Luffy, lost and wandering, encountered Wyper, a Shandia warrior who claimed Upper Yard belonged to his people. Although Luffy was willing to leave, Wyper challenged him to a fight. After an intense battle, Luffy was suddenly swallowed by Nola. Inside the snake’s stomach, he explored ruins and tried to escape. He was soon joined by Nami, Gan Fall, Pierre, and Aisa, who had also been eaten. Nami used her waver to escape, but Luffy and Aisa fell back into the snake. Eventually, they made it out when Enel struck Nola with a thunderbolt.
Luffy learned from Robin that Enel planned to destroy Skypiea. Determined to stop him, Luffy tracked him down to his floating ship, the Ark Maxim. When Enel attacked with his lightning powers, Luffy, being made of rubber, was completely unharmed.
The two fought fiercely, but Enel managed to trap Luffy’s arm in a giant gold ball and knock him off the ship. Luffy survived the fall and climbed Giant Jack, a massive beanstalk, to reach the Golden Bell at its peak. With the help of his crew, the beanstalk was tilted, allowing Luffy to launch himself at Enel.
As Enel prepared to destroy Skypiea with a massive lightning attack, Luffy dispersed it by using the golden ball to conduct the electricity. He then delivered a final blow, smashing Enel into the Golden Bell, defeating him. The bell rang out, proving to those below that the legendary city of gold was real.
Afterward, the Straw Hats joined the Skypieans and Shandia in a grand celebration. Later, they took treasure from Nola’s stomach and prepared to leave. Unknowingly, they fled before receiving even more gifts from the grateful citizens. The crew departed Skypiea, using a Balloon Octopus to slow their descent back to the Blue Sea.
After returning from Skypiea, Luffy and his crew encountered a giant wave caused by Sea Monkeys. After escaping, they celebrated their treasures and decided to use them to repair the Going Merry and hire a shipwright. On their journey, they encountered the Sea Monkeys again and found a mysterious, abandoned ship before arriving at their next island.
Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper explored the island and discovered that all the animals and plants were unusually long. They met an old man named Tonjit, who had been stuck on stilts for ten years.
After reuniting him with his horse, Shelly, they felt accomplished—until Shelly was suddenly shot by the pirate Foxy. Enraged, Luffy was about to fight Foxy, but instead, he was challenged to a Davy Back Fight, a series of pirate games where crew members were at stake. Despite warnings from Usopp, Luffy accepted the challenge.
The games began with the Donut Race, where Foxy’s crew cheated and used his Noro Noro no Mi powers to slow them down, causing Luffy to lose Chopper. In the second game, Groggy Ring, the Straw Hats fought back and won Chopper back.
Finally, Luffy faced Foxy in a one-on-one battle. Wearing an afro and boxing outfit for motivation, he struggled against Foxy’s tricks but ultimately turned the tables by reflecting Foxy’s own powers back at him with a mirror. Luffy landed the final punch and won the fight.
As his reward, Luffy chose Foxy's Jolly Roger instead of a crew member. Instead of keeping it, he drew a ridiculous new flag and gave it back. Though embarrassed, Foxy swore revenge. The Straw Hats then returned to Tonjit, giving him Foxy's old flag, which Chopper used as a bandage for Shelly.
Before they could continue their journey, they encountered Admiral Aokiji, a high-ranking Marine. Though initially friendly, he hinted at knowing Luffy’s grandfather and even helped Tonjit reunite with his people using his ice powers. However, tensions rose between Aokiji and Nico Robin, leading to a battle. Despite their efforts, Luffy and his crew were completely defeated. Fortunately, Aokiji left after freezing Luffy, giving them a warning to be careful with Robin in the future.
Seven days after their battle with Aokiji, Luffy had recovered and showed off his frozen pose while the crew continued their journey. They soon encountered a giant frog named Yokozuna, which Luffy wanted to eat. However, they had to turn back after nearly colliding with the Sea Train and saw Yokozuna unsuccessfully trying to attack it.
The crew then stopped at a nearby station and met Kokoro and her granddaughter Chimney, who told them their next destination, Water 7, was home to the world’s best shipbuilders. Excited, Luffy hoped to find a shipwright to join his crew. Kokoro gave them a map and a letter of recommendation for a man named Iceburg.
Upon arriving at Water 7, the crew docked at a small peninsula. Luffy, Nami, and Usopp set out to exchange their gold for money and meet Iceburg. After getting 300,000,000 berries, they met Kaku, a carpenter from the Galley-La Company, who informed them that Iceburg was also the mayor.
Kaku went to check on the Going Merry while Luffy and the others met Iceburg, who seemed carefree. His secretary, Kalifa, attacked them when they pointed this out. Iceburg then gave them a tour of the shipyard.
During their visit, the Franky Family suddenly stole the Straw Hats’ money, but Paulie and Rob Lucci stopped them and returned it. Luffy was amazed by the shipyard but failed to recruit Iceburg. Kaku then returned with bad news: the Going Merry was beyond repair and could no longer sail. Luffy struggled to accept this reality.
Soon after, they realized their money was missing again and overheard that Usopp had been seen with the Franky Family. Luffy immediately rushed off to find him.
While searching, Luffy accidentally fell into a canal but was rescued by Zoro, Sanji, and Chopper. They found Usopp badly beaten in a clearing near the Franky House. Furious, they stormed the Franky House and destroyed it, easily defeating the Franky Family. Afterward, Luffy decided it was time to say goodbye to the Going Merry.
Back on the ship, Usopp regained consciousness, and Luffy told him about his decision to get a new ship. Usopp refused to accept it, leading to a heated argument. Unable to agree, Usopp decided to leave the crew and challenged Luffy to a duel for the Merry. That night, they faced off. Usopp used long-range attacks and tricks, even landing a powerful Impact Dial blow, but in the end, Luffy defeated him. Tearfully, Luffy left the ship, letting Usopp do whatever he wanted with it.
The remaining Straw Hats, minus a missing Robin, spent the night at an inn. The next morning, Luffy learned from Nami that Iceburg had been shot. They rushed to Dock 1 but were met by a large crowd.
Suddenly, Franky arrived, furious over his family’s defeat. He attacked Luffy and Nami, revealing himself as a cyborg by detaching his arm to punch Luffy. Their intense fight was interrupted when Paulie, Kaku, Lucci, Peepley Lulu, and Tilestone arrived.
Paulie, Lulu, and Lucci attacked and overpowered Luffy, accusing the Straw Hats of being behind Iceburg’s shooting. Paulie revealed that Robin was seen as one of the attackers. Luffy refused to believe it and demanded to speak with Iceburg, but the shipwrights and townspeople restrained him and Nami. Just as they were cornered, Franky unleashed a powerful attack, allowing them to escape.
Luffy and Nami reached Galley-La Headquarters, where Luffy sneaked inside through a window. Kalifa let him enter Iceburg’s room, but Iceburg demanded that Luffy bring Robin to him. Unable to do so, Luffy had to escape when Iceburg started shooting at him.
Luffy and Nami met up with Zoro on the outskirts of town, hiding from angry citizens. Chopper soon joined them, revealing that Robin had admitted to framing them and planned to leave the crew forever. Shocked, Luffy decided to return to Headquarters that night to find the truth.
At night, Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and Chopper watched from a tree near Headquarters and saw a massive explosion. Luffy rushed forward but got blown into a building crevice. He escaped and reached a room where Paulie was being confronted by two masked figures. Recognizing them as enemies, Luffy tried to fight, but they quickly subdued him and Paulie.
After they left, Luffy freed himself and Paulie, and they raced toward Iceburg’s room, meeting Zoro, Nami, and Chopper along the way. Inside, they found Robin along with Lucci, Kaku, Kalifa, and Blueno, who revealed themselves as CP9, government assassins.
Lucci attacked Paulie, and Luffy stepped in, but Lucci easily overpowered him with his Rokushiki techniques. Robin declared she had a goal she couldn’t achieve with the Straw Hats. As the building caught fire, Lucci showed his Devil Fruit powers, transforming into a leopard. He struck Luffy with a powerful attack, sending him flying far away.
Luffy got stuck between two buildings but later heard Nami calling for him. She revealed that Robin had surrendered to the World Government to protect them. Determined to save her, Luffy pushed the buildings apart and escaped with Nami, just before a giant wave from Aqua Laguna hit.
Luffy, Nami, Zoro, and Chopper were eventually caught by the waves but were rescued by Paulie. After learning that Sanji had secretly boarded the Sea Train taking Robin to Enies Lobby, Luffy wanted a ship to chase them, but Paulie refused due to the storm. Kokoro then revealed another option—a secret Sea Train called Rocketman.
In an abandoned warehouse, Kokoro showed them Rocketman, and Iceburg had already gotten it running. As they prepared to leave, the Franky Family arrived, asking to join the rescue mission. Luffy agreed, and Rocketman set off. They soon discovered that Paulie and other Galley-La workers had stowed away as well.
Luffy then formed an alliance with them and the Franky Family to save Robin and Franky. When a massive tidal wave blocked their path, Luffy and Zoro combined their strength to break through.
As they neared Enies Lobby, they found some detached train cars from the Puffing Tom. Luffy jumped in to check for Sanji but was met by World Government agents and shot at. He ordered Zoro to cut the cars in half. Soon, they encountered Marine Captain T Bone running toward them. Luffy left it to Zoro, who quickly defeated him.
Later, they found Yokozuna blocking the tracks. Luffy told him to move, but the giant frog knocked Rocketman off course. After Luffy pulled Yokozuna onboard, Kokoro got the train back on track, and they finally saw Enies Lobby in the distance.
Luffy and the Straw Hats arrived at Enies Lobby on the Rocketman, along with their allies. Iceburg devised a plan where the Galley-La workers and Franky Family would clear the way while the Straw Hats charged in.
However, Luffy ignored the plan and launched himself over the Main Gate, fighting his way toward the Tower of Justice. Along the way, he defeated countless Marines and eventually faced CP9 agent Blueno. Luffy revealed a new ability, Gear 2, which made him much faster and stronger. He easily overwhelmed Blueno, knocking him out.
Luffy then called out to Robin, but she refused to go with him, saying she wanted to die. Spandam and CP9 appeared, boasting about the World Government’s power. In response, Luffy ordered Sogeking (Usopp in disguise) to burn the government flag, officially declaring war. Luffy then urged Robin to say she wanted to live, and she tearfully did. The Straw Hats prepared to storm the Tower of Justice.
Before they could cross the bridge, a mortar strike stopped them. However, Kokoro piloted Rocketman toward the tower, allowing the crew to jump on and crash into the building. Inside, they learned that CP9 had five keys, one of which could unlock Robin’s Seastone handcuffs.
The crew split up to fight CP9 while Luffy raced ahead to find Robin. He discovered an underground passage leading to the Gates of Justice and used Gear 3 to break through a steel door. After running down the hall, he finally encountered Lucci, ready for battle.
Luffy clashed with Lucci as he tried to chase after Robin, causing massive destruction. He briefly gained the upper hand but was stopped before escaping. Franky arrived with two CP9 keys and offered to help, but Luffy told him to keep going.
Lucci attacked Franky, but Luffy used Gear 2 to overwhelm him, allowing Franky to escape. Lucci then ripped a hole in the wall, threatening to flood the underground passage. Luffy followed him to a higher level, knowing he couldn’t let Lucci run free.
Lucci dominated the fight using powerful Rokushiki techniques, so Luffy revealed Gear 3, inflating his arm to giant size and launching Lucci out of the building. He continued attacking but was slowed down by Gear 3’s side effects, shrinking to the size of a child. Lucci found him and attacked, but Luffy returned to normal just in time to keep fighting. Lucci then used Rokuogan, a devastating shockwave attack, leaving Luffy barely able to stand.
As Luffy struggled, Usopp removed his Sogeking mask and encouraged him to keep fighting. Inspired by Usopp’s words, Luffy stood up and used Gomu Gomu no Jet Gatling, unleashing a barrage of punches that finally defeated Lucci. However, he collapsed from exhaustion. With Buster Call battleships closing in, Robin pushed Luffy off the tower, and the Going Merry miraculously appeared to save them.
The crew escaped as the Marines fired at them, but Sanji had closed the Gates of Justice, creating whirlpools that threw off their aim. Franky used Coup de Vent to propel the Merry to safety.
Once they were safe, Luffy begged Iceburg to fix the Merry, but Iceburg told him the ship had reached its limit. Accepting this, Luffy set the Merry on fire, giving it a proper farewell. As it sank, the ship spoke one last time, thanking the crew for taking care of it. Luffy and the Straw Hats tearfully said goodbye, mourning their beloved ship.
Two days after arriving at Water 7, Franky decided to build a new ship for the Straw Hats using Adam Wood. Meanwhile, Vice Admiral Garp and his Marines broke into Iceburg’s mansion and woke Luffy with a punch. To everyone’s shock, Luffy revealed that Garp was his grandfather. Garp then told Luffy about the Four Emperors and revealed that Shanks was one of them.
He also casually mentioned that Luffy’s father was Dragon the Revolutionary, the world’s most wanted criminal, which surprised everyone, including Luffy. Robin explained why Dragon was so infamous, and Garp admitted it was supposed to be a secret.
Later, Sanji informed the crew that Usopp wanted to rejoin. Luffy, Nami, and Chopper were ready to welcome him back, but Zoro insisted that Usopp should apologize first, saying a captain must be firm. Luffy agreed.
A few days later, the Franky Family excitedly told the Straw Hats their new ship was ready. They also revealed that Franky had received a bounty and begged the crew to let him join. The Straw Hats went to see their new ship, which Iceburg unveiled to their delight. Luffy wanted Franky to be their shipwright, but Iceburg said he’d need to convince him.
With help from the Franky Family, Luffy stole Franky’s underwear as leverage, but Franky confidently posed naked, unfazed. As they argued, Sanji and Zoro rushed in, warning that Garp was preparing to attack. Luffy threw Franky’s swim briefs back and told him to join them. Franky, wanting to see his ship reach the end of the world, agreed.
Garp then attacked their new ship, and Usopp tried to rejoin, but the crew ignored him until he sincerely apologized. Once he did, Luffy tearfully welcomed him back. With the crew reunited, Franky suggested naming the ship, and after rejecting Luffy’s silly ideas, they went with Iceburg’s suggestion—the Thousand Sunny. Using the ship’s emergency escape feature, Coup de Burst, the Straw Hats escaped Garp’s attack and set sail for their next adventure.
While sailing on the Thousand Sunny, the Straw Hats came across a ghost ship. Curious, Luffy, Nami, and Sanji climbed aboard and met a living skeleton named Brook. Luffy immediately invited him to join the crew, and Brook eagerly accepted. However, he later revealed that he couldn't because his shadow had been stolen.
Determined to help, Luffy promised to get Brook’s shadow back. Brook was touched and played his violin for the crew, revealing that he was a musician. Just as he began performing, a ghost appeared, followed by the sight of a mysterious island—Thriller Bark. Suddenly, Brook ran toward the island, leaving the crew behind.
Wanting to explore the island and fulfill his long-time wish of having a musician, Luffy decided to follow him, along with Franky and Robin. However, before they could leave, something invisible stopped them. Their ship then got caught in a massive spider web, forcing them to descend onto the island.
Once on Thriller Bark, Luffy and the others encountered strange creatures, including a three-headed dog, ghosts, and zombies. The ghosts drained Luffy’s willpower, but he quickly recovered. After defeating some zombies, they learned that Nami, Usopp, and Chopper had been attacked. Furious, Luffy and the group shoved the zombies back into their graves.
They then met an old man named Spoil, who explained that Gecko Moria, a Warlord of the Sea, had stolen his shadow along with many others. Robin revealed that Moria had a bounty higher than Luffy’s in the past. Determined to defeat him, Luffy agreed to help. As they explored further, they discovered that Thriller Bark was actually a massive ship.
Inside Moria’s mansion, the crew fought more zombies in the dining hall. After the battle, they realized Sanji was missing. Taking the zombie leader, Buhichuck, as a guide, they continued their search. When warned about Moria’s power, Luffy confidently declared he would "kick Moria’s ass."
As they walked, Zoro also disappeared, raising suspicions. Along the way, Luffy found a suit of armor and put it on for fun. Eventually, they reached an arena where Franky fought a powerful General Zombie. Suddenly, Buhichuck trapped them, forcing them to fight a swarm of zombies.
During the battle, Luffy encountered a zombie wielding three swords like Zoro. Before he could question it, he was ambushed by Spider Mice Zombies, trapped in a coffin, and taken to Moria.
Brought before Moria, Luffy was stripped of his armor and had his shadow stolen by Moria’s Devil Fruit, the Kage Kage no Mi. This left Luffy unconscious as Moria placed his shadow into a massive zombie named Oars. With his job done, Moria had Luffy’s unconscious body sent back to the Thousand Sunny.
After being placed in the Thousand Sunny’s kitchen, Usopp woke up Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji. They quickly learned what had happened while they were unconscious—Nami and three of their shadows had been stolen. Determined to get them back, Luffy and his crew prepared to fight Moria. Franky also told Luffy about Brook’s connection to Laboon, making Luffy even more eager to have him join the crew.
With dawn approaching, the crew split into two teams—one to rescue Nami and the other, led by Luffy, to defeat Moria. As they fought through Moria’s zombie army, Luffy and Sanji were temporarily taken down by Perona’s ghosts but were saved by their teammates. Chaos erupted when Oars, the giant zombie with Luffy’s shadow, smashed into the building, splitting up the crew. Left with only Robin and Chopper, Luffy pressed on toward Moria.
They were briefly stopped by Hogback and Cindry, but Robin and Chopper held them off, allowing Luffy to slip past. Luffy finally reached Moria and immediately attacked. However, Moria used his shadow, Doppelman, to fight for him. Luffy managed to land some hits but couldn’t defeat him outright. Things worsened when Oars fully obeyed Moria’s commands, forcing Luffy to chase Moria deeper into the forest.
Tricked into following Doppelman, Luffy got lost. As dawn neared, he met the Thriller Bark Victim’s Association, who offered a way to defeat Moria. With the help of Lola and the Rolling Pirates, Luffy absorbed 100 shadows, transforming into "Nightmare Luffy." With his newfound strength, he rushed back to face Oars and Moria.
Luffy arrived just in time to save Nami and Usopp. Using his immense strength, he overpowered Oars and delivered a final attack, Gomu Gomu no Storm, toppling the giant. Though exhausted, the battle wasn’t over—Oars rose again. The crew launched a final combined attack, restraining Oars while Luffy, with help from Brook and Robin, landed a massive Gear 3 punch, shattering Oars’ spine and immobilizing him.
With Oars defeated, they still needed to retrieve their shadows before sunrise. Instead of surrendering, Moria absorbed hundreds of shadows, transforming into a giant. Despite being exhausted and injured, Luffy refused to back down. He pushed himself to the limit, using Gear 2 to force Moria to release some shadows.
As dawn approached, Luffy stacked Gear 2 and Gear 3 to launch his final attack, Gomu Gomu no Gigant Jet Shell. With one last powerful strike, he defeated Moria, forcing him to release all the stolen shadows just in time to save everyone.
After the battle, Luffy collapsed from exhaustion. However, their victory was short-lived when Bartholomew Kuma, another Warlord, arrived with orders to eliminate everyone. A fierce battle ensued to protect the unconscious Luffy. In the end, Zoro offered his life in exchange for Luffy’s. Instead, Kuma used his power to transfer all of Luffy’s pain into Zoro, leaving him barely standing.
After Kuma left, the crew took a day to recover. During the celebration, Luffy noticed Brook playing a familiar song and asked him again to join the crew. Brook initially declined, still burdened by his past, but Luffy revealed that Laboon was alive and waiting for him. Overcome with emotion, Brook joyfully accepted Luffy’s offer.
With their new musician on board, the crew prepared to leave Thriller Bark. Before departing, Lola introduced them to the Vivre Card. Remembering the one Ace had given him, Luffy took it out and noticed it was burning and shrinking, indicating Ace was in danger. Dismissing it as part of Ace’s adventure, Luffy and the crew set sail for Fish-Man Island.
The Straw Hat Pirates finally reached the Red Line after days of sailing. Luffy, Robin, and Brook attempted to dive to Fish-Man Island in their submarine but had to retreat due to a Sea Bunny attack. Luffy quickly defeated the creature, which spit out a mermaid named Camie and her talking starfish companion, Pappag. To thank Luffy, Camie offered takoyaki, but they learned that her friend Hatchan had been kidnapped. The crew agreed to rescue him, especially after hearing about his cooking skills.
Following Camie's lead, they reached the kidnappers' hideout, led by Duval. After a brief battle, Luffy and the crew freed Hatchan. However, they discovered that Duval’s grudge against them stemmed from his face resembling Sanji’s wanted poster. Sanji ended up "fixing" Duval's face with a strong kick. In gratitude, Duval and his gang became allies, and Hatchan treated the crew to takoyaki.
Hatchan then guided them to Sabaody Archipelago to coat their ship for the journey to Fish-Man Island. While exploring, Luffy's group witnessed the cruelty of the World Nobles when they shot a runaway slave. Though furious, they held back, knowing attacking a Noble would summon a Marine Admiral. Meanwhile, Camie was kidnapped and taken to a human auction. The crew crashed the auction house to rescue her, but Hatchan was shot by a World Noble in the process. Enraged, Luffy punched the Noble unconscious.
This led to chaos, but Silvers Rayleigh, Roger’s former first mate, appeared and used Haki to knock out most of the guards. He freed Camie and later revealed the truth about Gol D. Roger. Rayleigh offered to coat their ship for free, but it would take three days. The crew prepared to survive until then.
However, they were soon attacked by powerful Pacifista robots and Marines, including Admiral Kizaru. Despite fighting back, they were overwhelmed. Rayleigh intervened to save Zoro, but the situation worsened when Bartholomew Kuma appeared. One by one, Kuma used his ability to make the crew disappear. Luffy was helpless as all his friends vanished before his eyes. In the end, Kuma told him they would never reunite again and sent Luffy away from Sabaody.
Luffy was sent flying by Kuma’s power and landed on Amazon Lily, an island of warrior women. He tried to leave but got sick from eating poisonous mushrooms and was rescued by three women, Marguerite, Sweet Pea, and Aphelandra. When they discovered he was a man, he was imprisoned.
After escaping, Luffy accidentally ended up in the bath of Boa Hancock, the island’s ruler. He saw a mysterious mark on her back, and she ordered his execution. He was forced to fight in an arena against Hancock’s sisters, who had powerful abilities. Luffy struggled at first but eventually overwhelmed them. When one sister’s back was exposed, Luffy covered it to protect her secret. This act moved Hancock, and she spared him.
Hancock revealed that she and her sisters were former slaves of the World Nobles. Later, when Luffy learned his brother Ace was set to be executed, he asked Hancock to take him to Impel Down instead of reuniting with his crew. Hancock, smitten with Luffy, agreed and smuggled him onto a Marine ship heading there.
Luffy hid in Hancock’s room as the Marine battleship traveled to Impel Down. She secretly provided him with food, and when they arrived, she used her powers to help him sneak inside undetected.
Following Ace’s Vivre Card, Luffy entered Level 1 of the prison, where he encountered Buggy. The two teamed up to fight guards and escape to Level 2. There, they met Mr. 3 (Galdino) and faced powerful beasts like the Basilisk and the Sphinx. After a chaotic series of battles, they fell into Level 3, a scorching wasteland called "Starvation Hell." Luffy pressed on alone until he reunited with Bon Kurei (Mr. 2), who helped him fight through more guards and monsters.
They reached Level 4, "Blazing Hell," but were soon confronted by Warden Magellan, who had the deadly poison powers of the Doku Doku no Mi. Luffy fought hard but was completely overwhelmed by Magellan’s poison and collapsed. Defeated, he was thrown into the freezing Level 5 to die.
Barely conscious, Luffy kept crawling toward Ace’s location but quickly passed out. Bon Kurei found him and dragged him through the snow, searching for the mysterious Iva while fighting off wolves. Before blacking out again, Luffy unleashed a powerful shout that knocked out the wolves.
Luffy and Bon Kurei were found by Emporio Ivankov and Inazuma, who saved them. Ivankov took Luffy to his secret hideout, Level 5.5, and used his powers to help Luffy survive Magellan’s poison. Though the process was painful and meant losing years of his life, Luffy recovered in just 20 hours. After learning that Dragon was Luffy’s father, Ivankov agreed to help him rescue Ace.
Luffy, Ivankov, and Inazuma fought through Level 5 and reached Level 6, only to find that Ace had already been taken to Marineford for execution. They freed Jinbe and Crocodile, who offered to help escape. Inazuma created a path out, and they fought their way back up through the prison, joined by Buggy, Galdino, and other freed prisoners. Luffy, Jinbe, and Crocodile worked together to defeat the powerful Jailer Beasts.
As they reached Level 3, Luffy was stopped by Vice Warden Hannyabal, but Blackbeard suddenly appeared and knocked Hannyabal out. Luffy attacked Blackbeard, recognizing him as the man responsible for Ace’s capture, but Jinbe stopped him from wasting time. The group pushed forward, battling guards and monsters along the way.
On Level 2, Magellan caught up with them. Galdino used his wax powers to protect Luffy from Magellan’s poison, allowing Luffy to fight back. However, Magellan unleashed an even stronger poison, forcing them to flee.
Outside the prison, they found no ship ready for escape. Jinbe arrived with a stolen battleship and called a school of whale sharks to help them. Ivankov used his Hell Wink to launch the prisoners into the sea, where the sharks carried them to the ship.
As they sailed away, Marine battleships attacked, and the Gates of Justice were closed, trapping them. However, Bon Kurei had stayed behind to open the gates, allowing them to escape. Luffy and the others tearfully thanked him over a Den Den Mushi, knowing they couldn’t go back to save him.
With Marineford approaching, Luffy declared that he would rescue Ace no matter what. When the Marines identified him and Buggy as the leaders of the breakout, Buggy—now seen as a legend by the prisoners—decided to join Luffy in the fight ahead.
As Luffy and the Impel Down escapees approached Marineford, the Gates of Justice mysteriously opened. Ivankov wondered if Dragon would come to save Ace, but Luffy revealed that Ace’s real father was Gol D. Roger. A thick fog blocked their view of Marineford.
Suddenly, a massive wave created by Whitebeard carried their ship toward the island. However, Admiral Aokiji froze the wave, trapping them on top. Luffy decided to break the ice and slide down, but after hearing that Ace’s execution was being moved up, they rushed to free the ship. The ice shattered beneath them, sending them crashing into the frozen bay. By sheer luck, they landed on a Marine battleship in the only unfrozen spot, and Luffy called out to Ace.
Crocodile tried to attack Whitebeard, but Luffy stopped him, knowing Ace cared about the Emperor. Whitebeard warned Luffy that he was risking his life, but Luffy insisted he would save Ace himself. Impressed by Luffy’s determination, Whitebeard let him go. Luffy then ran into the battlefield, announcing that the execution time had changed.
Admiral Kizaru attacked, but Ivankov blocked his laser. Luffy dodged Captain Hina’s traps and kept fighting Marines. Gecko Moria sent a zombie army at him, but Jinbe wiped them out with seawater.
Ace told Luffy to leave, but Luffy refused, saying he would rescue him no matter what. Meanwhile, Sengoku revealed to everyone that Luffy was the son of Dragon, but Luffy didn’t care. He took down a Marine giant, declaring he would save Ace even if it killed him.
As he fought forward, Smoker pinned him down, but Hancock appeared and kicked Smoker away. She secretly gave Luffy the key to Ace’s cuffs, and Luffy hugged her before running off. He then saw Ivankov facing Bartholomew Kuma, who was now an emotionless Pacifista. Luffy kept going but was stopped by Dracule Mihawk.
Mihawk attacked, forcing Luffy to dodge his powerful slashes. Some of Ivankov’s men tried to help, but Mihawk defeated them easily. Luffy almost lost his arms but managed to escape by using Buggy as a shield. He ran away as Whitebeard’s swordsman Vista engaged Mihawk in battle.
Seeing that Ace was about to be executed, Luffy rushed forward but was kicked away at the speed of light by Kizaru. He landed near Jinbe and the Whitebeard Commanders, who helped fight Kizaru. Then, Luffy watched in shock as Squard betrayed Whitebeard and stabbed him. However, Whitebeard quickly recovered and joined the battle.
As the fight intensified, Whitebeard’s powerful quake abilities shook the battlefield, nearly knocking Luffy into the sea. The Marines then raised an encircling wall, trapping everyone. Luffy could only watch as Admiral Akainu rained down magma meteors, melting the frozen bay and making the situation even worse.
Luffy rushed toward an opening in the encircling wall but was stopped by waiting Marines. After landing near Ivankov and Jinbe, he asked for help, and Jinbe launched him over the wall with a blast of seawater.
Luffy landed in front of the three Marine admirals and used Gear 2 to dash past them, but Kizaru caught up and kicked him back. As the executioners prepared to kill Ace, Crocodile took them out, but Luffy was then struck by Aokiji’s ice spear. Marco stepped in to fight Aokiji, allowing Luffy to continue forward.
Luffy was soon overpowered by Vice Admirals and shot by Kizaru again. Whitebeard caught Luffy and handed him over to his crew to treat his injuries, but Luffy refused to stay down. Despite the risks, he begged Ivankov for another injection of Vigor Hormones, forcing his exhausted body to keep going.
Charging forward again, Luffy was stopped by Koby but easily defeated him with one punch. When a group of Pacifista attacked, Hancock stepped in to protect him. As the executioners tried to kill Ace again, Luffy unknowingly unleashed Supreme King Haki, knocking them out. More Marines attacked, but Whitebeard's crew backed him up. Mihawk tried to strike Luffy, but Daz Bonez and Crocodile intercepted him. Inazuma then created a ramp leading to the execution platform.
As Luffy ran up the ramp, Garp blocked his path. Garp told Luffy he had to defeat him to save Ace. With no choice, Luffy used Gear 2 and punched his grandfather off the ramp. Though the ramp broke, Luffy jumped onto the execution platform, where Fleet Admiral Sengoku turned into a giant Buddha.
Kizaru destroyed Ace’s handcuff key, but Luffy saw Galdino waking up and told him to create a wax wall. Sengoku punched Luffy, but he absorbed the attack with Gomu Gomu no Gigant Fusen, causing the platform to collapse. As they fell, Galdino gave Luffy a wax key, allowing him to free Ace just in time for Ace to block Marine attacks.
On the ground, Luffy and Ace fought together against the Marines. When Aokiji attacked, Ace protected Luffy. Meanwhile, Whitebeard announced he would stay behind and die so the others could escape.
Luffy tried to convince Ace to leave, but Ace stopped after hearing Akainu insult Whitebeard. The two fought, and as Luffy picked up Ace’s Vivre Card, Akainu went to kill him. Ace jumped in and took the fatal blow.
Jinbe protected Ace from further attacks, but the wounded Ace fell into Luffy’s arms. As Luffy cried for help, Ace said goodbye, thanked Luffy and the Whitebeard Pirates for loving him, and passed away. Overcome with grief, Luffy collapsed mentally.
Jinbe carried Luffy away, but Akainu caught up and landed a magma punch through Jinbe, burning Luffy's chest. Crocodile intervened and sent them flying into the air, where Buggy caught them. Buggy took them to Trafalgar Law’s submarine, where the Heart Pirates prepared to escape. Thanks to Koby and the arrival of the Red Hair Pirates, they made it past Aokiji and Kizaru’s last attacks. Luffy, gravely injured, was taken inside for medical treatment as the submarine submerged and left Marineford.
Luffy was treated for his injuries on Law’s submarine while Law, Ivankov, Hancock, and Jinbe discussed the damage he had taken. Jinbe worried about how Luffy would react once he woke up.
After two weeks, Luffy woke up on Amazon Lily and went on a rampage, frantically asking where Ace was. As memories of Ace’s death returned, he stopped and listened to Jinbe, who told him the war was over. Realizing it wasn’t a dream, Luffy pinched his cheek and finally broke down in tears. He remembered his first meeting with Ace and began doubting himself, questioning how he could ever become Pirate King if he was so weak.
Jinbe told Luffy not to regret Ace’s death and reminded him that he hadn’t lost everything. After a brief struggle, Luffy remembered he still had his crew and declared that he would reunite with them at Sabaody Archipelago.
Luffy then met Silvers Rayleigh, who explained his connection to Shakky, Nyon, and the Kuja sisters. When Luffy asked if his crew had returned to Sabaody, Rayleigh said they likely hadn’t. He warned that if Luffy returned now, the same tragedy would repeat itself. Luffy then listened as Rayleigh made him a proposition. Meanwhile, news of Luffy’s survival spread across the world, along with reports of his actions.
It was revealed that Luffy, Jinbe, and Rayleigh had infiltrated Marineford again. After stealing a Marine ship, they circled Marineford in a burial-at-sea custom. Luffy then entered the plaza alone, rang the Ox Bell sixteen times, placed flowers in the rubble, and bowed in prayer before leaving. This was a message to his crew—"3D2Y"—meaning they would reunite in two years instead of three days.
Luffy later rested on the Kuja Pirates' ship, surrounded by Hancock’s crew, who watched over him and played with his stretchy skin. Luffy hoped his message had reached his crew, and Rayleigh assured him it had. Before leaving on a whale shark, Jinbe thanked Luffy and promised to help him again in the future.
Luffy then traveled with Rayleigh and the Kuja to Rusukaina, a dangerous island northwest of Amazon Lily, where he would train alone with Rayleigh. Rayleigh demonstrated the three types of Haki by subduing a rampaging elephant, exciting Luffy. Ready to begin training, Luffy placed his hat and vivre card on a rock, declaring that he would take a break from being a pirate for a while.
During the time skip, Luffy trained with Rayleigh and developed Gear 4 to fight the beasts on Rusukaina. He later asked Rayleigh how to make it stronger, but Rayleigh warned him about its drawbacks. Over time, Luffy improved his control over it.
After teaching Luffy the basics of Haki, Rayleigh told him it grows stronger when facing stronger enemies.
After two years of training, Luffy was given a ship by the Gorgon Sisters, Nyon, and Marguerite to sail to Sabaody. He grabbed his straw hat, said goodbye to the animals, and set off.
Near Sabaody, Hancock gave Luffy a coat and a backpack full of supplies before he left on a rowboat. After landing, he accidentally bumped into Demaro Black, who was impersonating him. Black, not recognizing the real Luffy, pulled a gun on him. Luffy dodged the bullet using Observation Haki and knocked out Black and his Fake Straw Hat Crew with Supreme King Haki.
Luffy was then taken to Black’s recruitment event, where the Marines and Pacifista suddenly attacked. Realizing Black was an imposter, Luffy quickly took down a Pacifista with a single punch. Soon after, Zoro and Sanji arrived and defeated another Pacifista. Luffy reunited with them and spotted Rayleigh, to whom he declared his dream of becoming the Pirate King.
With the help of Perona and a large bird, Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji reached the Thousand Sunny and reunited with the rest of the crew. As they prepared to set sail, a Marine battleship attacked, but the Kuja intervened. As the Sunny submerged, Luffy thanked his crew for training and declared the start of their journey to Fish-Man Island.
The Straw Hats explored the ocean and learned about the coating bubble. Franky told them that Hatchan was injured and waiting on Fish-Man Island, and he also revealed that Kuma had secretly protected the Sunny due to his ties with the Revolutionary Army.
They were soon attacked by the Caribou Pirates, but their sea beast, Momoo, fled after recognizing Luffy and Sanji. The crew easily captured Caribou and then encountered a giant kraken. Luffy decided to tame it and had Zoro and Sanji help.
Using Gear 3 and Armament Haki, Luffy knocked out the kraken but got separated from the crew in the deep sea. He, Zoro, and Sanji survived, and Luffy successfully tamed the kraken, naming it Surume. The crew then rode Surume toward Fish-Man Island.
Their journey was interrupted by an undersea volcano eruption, causing a landslide. Usopp held off most of the falling rocks, but Surume was knocked out, and the Sunny sank.
Despite this, they safely spotted Fish-Man Island, but they were soon confronted by Hammond of the New Fish-Man Pirates. He ordered them to surrender, but Luffy refused. When Hammond attacked with his Sea Beast army, the crew used a Coup de Burst to escape into the island’s protective barrier.
As they entered Fish-Man Island, the water swept the crew apart, leaving the Devil Fruit users helpless. Luffy, Usopp, Sanji, and Chopper were rescued by Camie and the Medaka Mermaid Quintuplets. After recovering, Camie took them on a tour, introducing them to Pappag at his mansion.
Luffy asked about Jinbe but learned he had left. The Neptune Brothers arrived searching for the Straw Hats, and Camie tried to hide them. However, Sanji’s extreme nosebleed from seeing mermaids exposed them.
Hammond and his crew arrived, but Luffy quickly defeated them. Sanji needed a rare blood transfusion, and two okama provided it. While recovering, they met Brook and learned that Big Mom now protected Fish-Man Island in exchange for candy. King Neptune then arrived and invited the Straw Hats to his palace.
At Ryugu Palace, Luffy wandered off and met the Mermaid Princess Shirahoshi. When an axe flew at her, Luffy intercepted it, learning that Vander Decken IX was hunting her. Shirahoshi had been locked in a tower for ten years for her safety. Luffy called her a crybaby but then offered to take her outside. She agreed, and they snuck out with her hiding inside Megalo’s mouth.
On the way to the Sea Forest, Luffy saw Sanji and Chopper with an injured Hatchan. Megalo suddenly spit out Shirahoshi, shocking the citizens. Vander Decken then attacked, but Luffy used Supreme King Haki to clear the area and knocked Decken out with a Gear 2 attack. Shirahoshi freed Luffy and the others, and they escaped as Decken summoned Wadatsumi to attack. Luffy struck Wadatsumi, allowing them to flee.
They reached the Sea Forest and reunited with Franky before meeting Jinbe. Shirahoshi visited her mother Otohime’s grave. Nami and Camie arrived, warning that the New Fish-Man Pirates had invaded the palace.
Jinbe then revealed that he had released Arlong into the East Blue. He explained the history of Queen Otohime and Fisher Tiger’s efforts to change human-fish-man relations. However, Luffy fell asleep and barely listened.
Hody broadcasted a message across Fish-Man Island, showing King Neptune in chains and announcing he would execute him in three hours. He also revealed that Zoro, Usopp, and Brook were trapped in a cage set to be submerged. Luffy wanted to help immediately, but Jinbe stopped him, fearing it would worsen tensions between humans and fish-men.
They fought briefly until Robin calmed things down. Jinbe then came up with a plan—Luffy would hide inside Megalo, allowing Jinbe to stage a rescue and call for Luffy at the right moment to rally support.
However, the plan took an unexpected turn when Shirahoshi was also captured. They were brought before Hody, who revealed his goal of taking over the surface world with his army of 100,000. Luffy then burst out of Megalo, kicked Hody away, and took down 50,000 of his soldiers with his Supreme King Haki.
The Straw Hats joined the fight, overwhelming Hody’s forces. Hody tried to force Surume, the kraken, to attack, but Luffy won Surume over. When Hody threatened Surume’s brother, Luffy reassured the kraken and charged at Hody, kicking him in the face.
The battle escalated, with Hody trying to strike Luffy, but Luffy countered with Armament Haki. Meanwhile, Vander Decken sent Noah, a massive ship, crashing toward Fish-Man Island. Shirahoshi fled to lead it away, and Luffy pursued Noah to destroy it if necessary. Hody followed, but Fukaboshi intervened. Hody eventually stabbed Decken, causing Noah to fall uncontrollably toward the island.
Luffy engaged Hody in a fierce battle, landing powerful blows, including his fiery Red Hawk attack. He then defeated Hody with an Elephant Gun punch. As Noah fell, Luffy tried to destroy it, but a mysterious voice stopped him. Shirahoshi revealed that the Sea Kings had arrived to hold the ship in place, preventing disaster. Exhausted and bleeding, Luffy lost consciousness.
Back at Gyoncorde Plaza, Jinbe gave Luffy a blood transfusion, breaking the island’s law against sharing blood between humans and fish-men. When Luffy woke up, he asked Jinbe to join his crew, but Jinbe declined for now. Later, they attended a feast at Ryugu Palace, where Jinbe explained recent world events, including Akainu becoming Fleet Admiral and Blackbeard taking Whitebeard’s place as an Emperor.
Suddenly, Shirahoshi screamed—Caribou was trying to kidnap her. Luffy swiftly defeated him and recovered the palace’s stolen treasure. Meanwhile, Big Mom’s pirates arrived to collect Fish-Man Island’s candy tribute.
Since the candy was gone, Big Mom threatened to destroy the island. Luffy answered her call, claiming responsibility for eating the candy and offering treasure instead. He also declared that he would defeat her and make Fish-Man Island his territory. Big Mom, intrigued by his boldness, shifted her attention to him.
As the Straw Hats prepared to leave, Nami received a Log Pose pointing to three islands. Luffy, eager for adventure, chose the most dangerous route. Shirahoshi tearfully bid him farewell, promising to be stronger next time they met. With that, the crew set sail for the New World, where Luffy eagerly looked forward to meeting Shanks.
The Straw Hat Pirates faced a series of challenges as they entered the New World. While fishing, they were nearly dragged into a dangerous current but were saved by a pod of Island Whales. They then arrived at an island with a burning sea, where they received a distress call from a man claiming to be under attack by a samurai on Punk Hazard. Despite warnings of a Marine trap, Luffy decided to investigate with Zoro, Usopp, and Robin.
Upon arriving, they discovered the island was divided into fire and ice regions. They fought a dragon, which Zoro ultimately defeated, and encountered a talking pair of legs belonging to a samurai named Kin'emon. Meanwhile, the rest of the crew was captured and taken to the icy side of the island. After regrouping, they learned about Caesar Clown, a scientist conducting experiments on kidnapped children, making them addicted to a dangerous drug.
Luffy and his crew clashed with Caesar’s subordinates, including the Yeti Cool Brothers, and rescued their captured crewmates. During the chaos, they met Trafalgar Law, now a Warlord of the Sea, who proposed an alliance to take down Kaido, one of the Four Emperors. Luffy agreed, and the crew prepared to capture Caesar as part of their plan.
Luffy, Franky, and Robin launched into a Marine battleship at the back entrance of Caesar’s lab, where Luffy loudly declared his intent to defeat and kidnap Caesar. He was soon attacked by Smoker and Tashigi, but Robin realized their bodies had been switched. As they fought, large slime globs fell from the sky and exploded when ignited. Caesar appeared, explaining the slime’s nature, but Luffy immediately attacked him. Despite Luffy’s Haki, Caesar used his gas powers to remove oxygen around him, causing Luffy to lose consciousness.
Caesar captured Luffy, Law, and their allies, locking them in a cage with Seastone restraints. He revealed his plan to unleash a deadly gas weapon called Shinokuni. However, Law had swapped his Seastone cuffs with regular ones, allowing them to break free.
Luffy rushed to find Caesar, fighting through his henchmen. As they clashed again, Monet interfered, trapping Luffy in her freezing snow. Luffy escaped by breaking the floor but fell into a trash heap, where he met Momonosuke, a young boy who had eaten an artificial Dragon-Dragon Fruit.
Determined to stop Caesar, Luffy and Momonosuke escaped the trash heap. Luffy found Caesar attacking Brownbeard and confronted him. Caesar revealed his connection to Doflamingo and Kaido, warning Luffy that attacking him would provoke powerful enemies. Unfazed, Luffy continued the fight. Caesar merged with Shinokuni gas to become stronger, but Luffy used Gear 3 and Haki to land a devastating Grizzly Magnum attack, sending Caesar flying.
Meanwhile, Franky battled Doflamingo’s subordinates, Buffalo and Baby 5, who tried to retrieve Caesar. Nami and Usopp intervened, defeating them and trapping Caesar with Seastone cuffs.
With Caesar captured, the Marines took the children to safety, while the Straw Hats and Law set sail for Dressrosa. Law explained their plan: with Caesar and his SAD production stopped, they aimed to destroy Doflamingo’s SMILE factory, cutting off Kaido’s supply of artificial Zoan fruits.
The next morning, the crew learned that Doflamingo had stepped down as a Warlord to meet Law’s demands, and news of their alliance had spread. Their next destination: Dressrosa.
Law contacted Doflamingo to negotiate, but Luffy interrupted, asking if he was Caesar’s boss. Doflamingo hinted that he had something Luffy would want, which Luffy assumed was meat. Usopp snapped him out of it, and Law agreed to deliver Caesar to Green Bit.
The crew then planned to destroy the SMILE factory on Dressrosa. Luffy got excited about their next destination and, while eating, overheard Kin'emon and Momonosuke talking about their journey. After learning about Kanjuro’s capture, Luffy eagerly decided to rescue him. Soon, the Thousand Sunny reached Dressrosa.
The group split up, with Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Franky, and Kin'emon heading into the city. While exploring, they saw living toys and famous landmarks. At a restaurant, they witnessed thugs cheating a blind man out of his money, but the man revealed his gravity-based ability and defeated them. As he left, Luffy asked for his name, but the man refused to answer.
After Zoro's sword was stolen, he chased the thief with Sanji and Kin'emon. Luffy, meanwhile, interrogated one of Doflamingo’s men, who mentioned a tournament at the colosseum. When Luffy learned the prize was Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi, he decided to compete, not wanting it to fall into the wrong hands. He signed up under the alias "Lucy" and easily defeated a fighter named Spartan, impressing other contestants.
Luffy met Cavendish, who resented the Worst Generation, but Luffy ignored his story. He also spoke with Rebecca, a gladiator who wanted to defeat Doflamingo. Soon, the winner of A Block was announced—Jesus Burgess of the Blackbeard Pirates.
Before B Block started, Luffy encountered Bellamy, who revealed he had visited Skypiea and was fighting to join Doflamingo’s crew. Luffy then watched the battles unfold alongside Cavendish. Chinjao approached Luffy, asking about Garp and revealing Luffy’s identity. Cavendish, furious, prepared to attack, but Chinjao struck first. Luffy dodged and defended himself while Chinjao kept attacking, forcing his grandsons Boo and Sai to calm him down.
As Luffy continued watching, he was shocked by Bartolomeo’s mysterious ability, which easily blocked attacks, even from Bellamy. When King Elizabello unleashed his legendary "King Punch," wiping out most fighters, Bartolomeo remained standing, revealing he had eaten the Barrier-Barrier Fruit. He then defeated the king and won B Block.
As Bellamy was carried away, he and Luffy had a friendly conversation, while Bartolomeo overheard Bellamy calling him Straw Hat.
When C Block started, Luffy joined the battle, excited to fight. During the battle, he befriended a Fighting Bull named Ucy and rode on him. However, Hajrudin crushed Ucy, angering Luffy, who knocked him out in return. Later, Jean Ango stole Luffy’s helmet, forcing him to use his cape as a disguise.
Luffy then fought Chinjao, who had a grudge against him because of Garp. After an intense battle, Luffy defeated Chinjao with a powerful punch, accidentally restoring his head shape. He won C Block, earning cheers from the audience.
After leaving the arena, Cavendish tried to attack Luffy, but Chinjao interrupted, wanting to thank him. Luffy fled and was saved by Rebecca, who took him to the Gladiator’s quarters. There, he met imprisoned gladiators and learned that Rebecca was fighting for the Mera Mera no Mi to protect herself. She also told Luffy about the toys and the dark truth behind Dressrosa.
During D Block, Luffy watched and supported Rebecca, impressed by her Observation Haki. Soon, Bartolomeo guided him to Zoro and Kin’emon, where they learned about the country's true situation. As they planned their next moves, a fierce battle between Law and Doflamingo ended with Doflamingo shooting Law.
Luffy was furious but was trapped inside the colosseum due to Seastone bars. He then realized the blind man they met earlier was actually Admiral Fujitora. As Doflamingo and Fujitora took Law away, Zoro and Kin’emon tried to stop them but failed. Meanwhile, Luffy learned that the Big Mom Pirates were attacking the Sunny. He gave Sanji permission to fight back and ordered Franky’s group to destroy the SMILE factory. Luffy then set off with Zoro and Kin’emon to rescue Law and confront Doflamingo.
While searching for an exit from the colosseum, Luffy found Bartolomeo carrying a wounded Bellamy. Deciding to leave the tournament to save his friend, Luffy was surprised when someone objected. That person turned out to be his long-lost brother, Sabo, whom he thought was dead. Overcome with emotion, Luffy embraced him. Sabo asked for permission to claim the Mera Mera no Mi, and Luffy agreed, giving Sabo his disguise to enter the tournament in his place.
Luffy later escaped the colosseum with Zoro and Kin’emon, disguising themselves to avoid the Marines. They met Viola, who offered to guide them to the royal palace. Using a hidden passage, they attempted to sneak in, but Luffy impatiently smashed through a gate, alerting their enemies. Inside, they encountered Pica, a high-ranking member of Doflamingo’s crew, who used his Devil Fruit powers to manipulate stone. Zoro fought Pica while Luffy and Viola moved ahead.
On their way, Luffy saved Thunder Soldier (Kyros) from Gladius. Viola revealed Kyros’ true identity and Dressrosa’s past. When Kyros tried to attack Doflamingo, Luffy stepped in to protect him. However, it turned out that the Doflamingo they fought was just a copy. The real Doflamingo appeared and trapped the entire island in his "Birdcage" plan, forcing a deadly survival game. Determined to stop him, Luffy reassured Rebecca about her father and vowed to defeat Doflamingo.
Luffy, Zoro, and Law advanced toward the royal palace but were intercepted by Pica, who attacked as a massive stone giant. Laughing at Pica’s voice, Luffy angered him further. With the help of allies from the colosseum, Luffy and his group continued forward, fighting off Doflamingo’s men. After reaching the first level of the King’s Plateau, they ran into Kelly Funk, who led them through a tunnel, but it turned out to be a trap. After escaping, Luffy carried Law and punched through barriers to keep advancing.
With help from Cavendish, they rode toward the next level, where Rebecca was waiting. Robin and Bartolomeo helped them by holding off enemies, and Bartolomeo even created a stairway for Luffy to reach the fourth level. As Luffy ran ahead carrying Law, Bartolomeo protected him from Gladius’ attack, allowing him to continue toward his final showdown with Doflamingo.
Luffy and Law reached the fourth level, where Rebecca gave them the key to Law’s handcuffs. After freeing himself, Law and Luffy moved ahead while Kyros stayed behind to fight Diamante. Rebecca asked if Luffy would really defeat Doflamingo, and he assured her he would, revealing his real name. As they reached the palace, Sugar tried to turn them into toys, but Usopp knocked her out from afar, allowing them to continue.
When they arrived, Luffy was furious at Doflamingo for treating Bellamy like trash. Doflamingo used Bellamy as a shield, forcing Luffy to fight him. Bellamy refused to back down, despite Luffy’s pleas, and was eventually knocked out just like in their previous fight in Jaya.
Luffy then returned to battle Doflamingo and found Law badly injured. Doflamingo mocked Law’s belief in the Straw Hats, enraging Luffy. As the fight continued, Law used Gamma Knife to damage Doflamingo’s organs, but Doflamingo used his string powers to heal himself. He then trapped Luffy, leaving him helpless against Trebol. Law managed to defeat Trebol, causing an explosion, but Luffy escaped and handed Law over to Robin and Cavendish for safety.
Luffy and Doflamingo clashed fiercely, with Luffy activating Gear 4: Boundman. His powerful attacks sent Doflamingo crashing through buildings, but Doflamingo revealed his Devil Fruit awakening, turning the ground into string. The battle continued for 20 minutes, and Luffy eventually ran out of energy, forcing him to retreat. Gatz and the colosseum fighters protected him while he recovered.
Sabo intervened to stop Burgess from attacking Luffy, and Law helped protect him until his Haki returned. Once recovered, Luffy rejoined the fight, saving Rebecca from being forced to attack Viola. Doflamingo launched another assault, but Luffy, enraged by his cruelty, activated Gear 4 again and took the battle into the sky.
Luffy faced off against Doflamingo, who tried to trap him in Spider’s Net and attacked with 16 Godthreads. Luffy countered with his strongest attack, King Kong Gun, smashing Doflamingo into the ground and shattering his sunglasses. This final blow defeated Doflamingo, causing the Torikago to collapse. As Luffy fell from exhaustion, Law teleported him to safety, where Rebecca held his head and cried in relief.
After the battle, Luffy and his crew went to rest at Kyros’ old house. Three days later, while recovering, he learned of a false rumor about Rebecca’s father but chose to focus on escaping Dressrosa. When the Marines began their pursuit, Bartolomeo and the other gladiators prepared an escape route. Before leaving, Luffy took Rebecca to reunite with Kyros, then rushed to the eastern port.
There, he stopped Admiral Fujitora’s attack with a Haki-infused punch and declared he was done running. Despite fighting, Luffy openly announced his moves out of respect for Fujitora’s blindness. Amused, the Admiral used his gravity powers to blast Luffy away, allowing the Straw Hats and their allies to escape on Orlumbus’ flagship, Yonta Maria.
Onboard, Cavendish, Bartolomeo, Sai, Ideo, Leo, Hajrudin, and Orlumbus pledged allegiance to Luffy, forming the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. Luffy, uninterested in status, refused to drink the sake cup, but the allies still vowed loyalty. A massive feast followed. As they left Dressrosa, enemy pirates attacked, but Fujitora dropped rubble on them as a final favor to Luffy.
Afterward, the new fleet members received Luffy’s vivre card and parted ways. Bartolomeo then took the Straw Hats, Law, and the samurais aboard his ship, where they saw their new, increased bounties.
During a hailstorm, Luffy learned that the Barto Club had no navigator and lacked sailing experience. As a result, he and his crew had to help protect the ship. After a week of traveling through the dangerous New World, they arrived at Zou, an island on the back of a giant, 1,000-year-old elephant.
After finding the Thousand Sunny, the Barto Club said their goodbyes. Luffy’s group then climbed the elephant’s leg using a dragon created by Kanjuro. Along the way, a falling monkey knocked Kin’emon and Kanjuro off the dragon, separating them from the group. The rest continued onward, reaching the top and exploring the island. Luffy ran ahead, searching for Sanji and the others.
In the Whale Forest, Luffy was attacked by Roddy, a Mink guardian, but Wanda and Carrot stopped the fight. After reuniting with the Heart Pirates, Wanda explained that Zou had been attacked recently. She took Luffy to meet Sanji’s group, and he was thrilled to reunite with Nami and Chopper. During their journey, Wanda told Luffy about Jack, a pirate believed to be dead after attacking a Marine escort.
During a feast with the Mink Tribe, Luffy happily reunited with Brook, who warned him not to mention samurai or Wano. Brook then explained that Momonosuke was safe but unwilling to leave his room. When Luffy accidentally blurted out the name "Raizo," Nami, Usopp, and Brook quickly silenced him. They then met Duke Inuarashi, who told them about his past encounter with Shanks before falling asleep due to the time of day.
Wanda later revealed that Jack attacked Zou while searching for the Wano ninja, Raizo. Luffy, angered by the destruction, vowed to make Jack and Kaido pay. The Straw Hats then traveled to the Whale Forest to meet Nekomamushi.
Along the way, Nami and Brook told the others about Big Mom’s planned Tea Party, where Sanji was to marry Pudding, a daughter of the Charlotte Family. Sanji left with the Big Mom Pirates to deal with his family.
At first, Luffy was excited at the thought of gaining a new ally through Sanji’s marriage. However, when Brook explained that this would make the Straw Hats subordinates of Big Mom, Luffy became frustrated. Learning that Sanji might cut ties with them, he decided to go after him.
Meeting with Pekoms, Luffy learned that the wedding was arranged by Sanji’s father and Big Mom to form an alliance. Pekoms also revealed that Sanji’s family, the Vinsmokes, controlled the deadly Germa 66 army.
Luffy was unfazed, saying he wanted Big Mom to be his underling instead. Pekoms warned that Sanji couldn’t refuse the marriage, as rejecting it would result in someone close to him being killed. Luffy ignored Pekoms’ objections and insisted on going to the Tea Party to bring Sanji back.
Outside, Luffy found Zoro listening in and assumed he was worried about Sanji, which annoyed him. They then met Nekomamushi, who warmly greeted them. Law arrived and was shocked to hear that Sanji had gone to Big Mom. Luffy reassured him that he would bring Sanji back and told Law not to attack Kaido until then. Concerned that Kaido might be coming after them, Law warned that Zou could be in danger. Touched by Law’s concern, Nekomamushi decided to celebrate with Luffy and the others.
The next morning, Luffy and his group heard a bell and realized Kin'emon and Kanjuro had arrived. Worried about the Mink Tribe’s reaction, they rushed to find them. However, instead of hostility, the minks welcomed the samurai and revealed that Raizo was safe, shocking the Straw Hats.
Kin'emon then revealed that Momonosuke was actually the son of Kouzuki Oden. The group was taken to meet Raizo, and though he didn’t look like their idea of a ninja, he eventually performed tricks to entertain them.
Outside, they saw the devastation caused by Jack’s attack, and Robin deciphered a red Poneglyph hidden in the Whale Tree. The minks explained the importance of the four Road Poneglyphs and how they lead to Laugh Tale. Luffy was eager to fight Kaido and Big Mom to obtain them.
They also learned that Oden traveled with Roger and Whitebeard, and that he was executed by Kaido and the Wano shogun. Kin'emon asked Luffy for help, but Luffy made Momonosuke ask himself. Seeing his determination, Luffy agreed and formed an alliance with the minks and samurai.
Later, Luffy discovered that the Whitebeard Pirates were defeated by Blackbeard and went into hiding. The alliance split up, planning to meet again in Wano. Luffy, Nami, Chopper, and Brook prepared to rescue Sanji. Before they could leave, Zunesha cried out in pain, and Luffy and Momonosuke could hear its voice. Following Luffy’s encouragement, Momonosuke commanded Zunesha to attack Jack’s fleet, sinking it.
After checking on Pekoms, Luffy carried him and jumped off Zunesha with his team to head for Whole Cake Island. On the way, they discovered Carrot had stowed away. Luffy let her stay. When food ran low, Luffy insisted on cooking but burned the meal, using up all their supplies. Meanwhile, they read in the newspaper that the Blackbeard Pirates attacked the Revolutionary Army’s headquarters. Luffy was worried for Sabo, but Pedro assured him there was no news of their defeat.
Now facing a food crisis, the team continued their journey toward Whole Cake Island.
A few days later, Luffy's group was starving and struggling in the intense heat. Luffy caught a giant fish, but after eating its toxic skin, he was poisoned and collapsed. Soon after, they encountered a Germa 66 ship carrying Sanji’s siblings, Yonji and Reiju. Reiju removed the poison from Luffy, reviving him instantly. Luffy thanked her and asked for Sanji, but she and Yonji left without helping.
The group then arrived at Cacao Island, where Luffy and Chopper explored and ate at a café. A policeman tried to arrest them, but the café owner, Charlotte Pudding, defended them. She invited them to her home and fed them. They were shocked to learn she was Sanji’s fiancée, while she was surprised they were part of the Straw Hat crew.
Pudding explained her family and Sanji’s rejection of the marriage. She then revealed a secret route to Whole Cake Island and promised to bring Sanji to them. Before leaving, the team found a message from Pekoms warning them to turn back, but Luffy was determined to continue.
Sailing toward Whole Cake Island, Luffy wanted to rescue Pekoms, but Pedro assured him he’d be fine. They fought a giant centipede and later a swarm of ants, eventually getting stuck in a frozen sea of syrup. As they worked to escape, Pedro revealed he had once traveled to Totto Land searching for Poneglyphs but failed. He now wanted to help the Straw Hats by stealing Big Mom’s Road Poneglyph while they rescued Sanji. Luffy agreed, and the next day, they reached Whole Cake Island.
After docking, the team split up. Pedro and Brook went for the Poneglyph, while Luffy’s group searched for Sanji. Luffy thought he saw Sanji and ran into a strange forest, dragging Chopper, Carrot, and Nami with him.
They were distracted by the sweets around them and attacked by a talking crocodile. They also met a buried man with a giant head and then encountered Brûlée, Big Mom’s daughter, who disguised herself as Luffy. The two fought, perfectly matching each other’s moves, while Brûlée’s allies chased the rest of the group.
At night, Luffy gathered what he thought were multiple versions of his friends, confused about why they had multiplied. He then realized they were fakes and freed the real Nami. They interrogated the buried man, Pound, who revealed that Big Mom’s Devil Fruit powers allowed her to bring objects to life and that he was one of her discarded husbands. Suddenly, Big Mom’s son, Charlotte Cracker, appeared and confronted them.
As Luffy and Nami prepared to fight Cracker, they were ambushed by Randolph, but Cracker knocked him aside in anger. Brûlée showed them Carrot and Chopper trapped in a mirror before smashing it, but they remained unharmed. When Cracker tried to kill Pound, Luffy intervened, freeing him. Cracker then sent Luffy flying into a tree, but Luffy got up, ready to fight with full force.
Luffy refused to retreat despite Nami’s warnings and fought Cracker using Gear 4. However, Cracker's biscuit soldiers and Haki proved to be a challenge. The battle lasted 11 hours, with Luffy eating Cracker’s soldiers to weaken him. With Nami’s help, Luffy softened the biscuits with rain and used Tankman: Full Version to defeat Cracker, sending him flying.
Exhausted, Luffy and Nami traveled on King Baum’s back toward Big Mom’s castle. Along the way, they encountered Sanji, who coldly rejected Luffy and attacked him. Luffy refused to fight back and insisted that Sanji was lying. He vowed to stay and starve unless Sanji returned.
Soon, Big Mom’s army arrived, and Luffy fought them alone. Though he took down many enemies, he was eventually captured and imprisoned in a book alongside Nami. Big Mom mocked Luffy, claiming he was no match for her. During this time, she mentioned a legendary treasure box she planned to open at the wedding.
Later, Pudding visited Luffy and Nami, appearing kind at first but then revealing her true nature. She planned to kill Sanji at the wedding and mocked them before leaving. Enraged, Luffy struggled to break free, willing to rip off his own arms. Before he could, Jinbe arrived, defeated their captor, and set them free.
Luffy, weak from hunger, ran through the castle searching for Sanji. Reiju stopped him and revealed that Sanji already knew about Pudding’s betrayal but was afraid for his family. Relieved, Luffy returned to their promised meeting spot and waited for Sanji in the rain.
When Sanji arrived with a bento box, Luffy eagerly ate it. Sanji admitted he wanted to return but feared for his family's safety. Luffy reassured him, vowing to crash the wedding. Soon after, Chopper’s group contacted them, and Jinbe suggested teaming up with Bege, who was planning to betray Big Mom. Luffy agreed to meet him.
Luffy and Sanji arrived at Bege’s hideout, where Vito insisted they take a bath before meeting Bege. Afterward, Luffy and Brook raided the fridge for milk, which healed their injuries. During negotiations, Luffy spotted Caesar Clown and wanted to attack Bege for harming Pekoms, but Jinbe calmed him down by reminding him they had a common enemy—Big Mom.
Bege then revealed his plan to assassinate her, assigning Luffy the role of creating a distraction. Luffy agreed and came up with his own idea: hiding inside the wedding cake using Brûlée’s power.
At the tea party, Luffy overslept but woke up just in time. When Katakuri tried to kill Sanji, Luffy and his clones burst out of the cake, causing chaos. He attempted to destroy Big Mom’s precious photo of Mother Carmel but was stopped by Katakuri. Jinbe freed him, officially leaving Big Mom’s crew to join the Straw Hats.
Luffy cheered when Brook finally broke the picture, but Big Mom didn’t react immediately. As the battle escalated, Luffy managed to show her the broken portrait, triggering her scream. Bege’s crew then launched an attack, but Big Mom’s scream destroyed their weapons. Trapped, they fled into Bege’s fortress form.
With their plan failing, Bege devised an escape strategy. Luffy attempted to fight Big Mom but was held back by his crew. When Big Mom taunted him, he activated Gear 4 but was easily blocked. The group was captured but saved when the Tamatebako chest exploded, toppling Whole Cake Chateau. During the confusion, they escaped and split up, with Luffy’s team heading for their ship.
As they fled, Big Mom chased them while riding Zeus. She attacked King Baum, but Nami distracted Zeus, buying time. When Prometheus attacked, Luffy tried to fight but couldn’t hurt him. Jinbe used water to stun Prometheus, and the team continued running. Nami later struck Big Mom’s forces with a massive lightning attack, but Big Mom remained unfazed.
They encountered Pudding and Chiffon, who asked Sanji to bake a new wedding cake to stop Big Mom’s rampage. Sanji agreed, splitting from the group while Luffy’s team raced to the Thousand Sunny. When they arrived, they found Perospero and Katakuri waiting. Luffy destroyed Perospero’s attack with Red Hawk but was shocked when Pedro sacrificed himself in a massive explosion.
As the crew tried to escape, Katakuri restrained Carrot. Luffy grabbed him and dragged him into the Mirro-World, destroying the mirror to the Sunny and preparing for a showdown.
Luffy and Katakuri began their intense battle as the Thousand Sunny fled from Big Mom’s fleet. Katakuri proved to be stronger and faster, countering Luffy’s attacks with his mochi-based abilities. He overwhelmed Luffy, pinning him down and ordering Brûlée to burn the Sunny. However, Luffy managed to contact Nami, telling her to break all the mirrors leading to the ship so he could focus on the fight.
Katakuri continued his relentless assault, using his advanced Observation Haki and Awakening powers to trap Luffy. Luffy struggled but found an opportunity when he discovered Katakuri secretly eating in private. Furious at being seen, Katakuri attacked, but Luffy managed to land a hit. Activating Gear 4, Luffy fought back and briefly gained the upper hand before Katakuri adjusted and knocked him down again.
Realizing his Gear 4 was running out, Luffy fled and escaped the Mirro-World using Brûlée. He traveled between islands, avoiding Big Mom while thinking of a way to defeat Katakuri. Remembering Rayleigh’s teachings, he decided to improve his ability to see into the future.
Luffy returned to face Katakuri and, despite being beaten down multiple times, his Observation Haki improved. Katakuri attempted to finish the fight, but interference from Flampe caused him to injure himself in frustration. Both fighters used their Supreme King Haki to knock out onlookers, agreeing to settle the battle without interference.
Luffy then activated Gear 4: Snakeman, increasing his speed and landing more hits. The two clashed in a final exchange of powerful attacks, leading to Luffy falling into a crater. When he climbed out, Katakuri asked if Luffy would return to defeat Big Mom, and upon hearing Luffy’s confident reply, he collapsed, defeated. Luffy then covered Katakuri’s face with his hat and walked away. Pekoms, in disguise, appeared with Brûlée and offered to help Luffy escape, honoring Pedro’s sacrifice.
As Luffy traveled toward the mirror leading to Cacao Island, Pekoms explained his Sulong form and plan to help him escape. Hiding Luffy between himself and Brûlée, Pekoms exited the Mirro-World but was quickly attacked, exposing Luffy. Sanji grabbed Luffy and tried to escape through the air, but they were knocked down by Charlotte Yuen. Just as they were cornered, Germa 66 arrived to help.
Sanji's siblings shielded them while Sanji carried the unconscious Luffy. As they fought off the Big Mom Pirates, Brûlée revealed Luffy’s victory over Katakuri, enraging the enemy. Oven attacked, but Ichiji blocked him, allowing Sanji and Luffy to escape. Niji then grabbed them and propelled them toward the Thousand Sunny, sending them flying over the enemy fleet.
Back on the Sunny, Chopper treated Luffy's injuries while Smoothie's fleet attacked. Judge and the Germa helped them escape, though Judge questioned why Luffy risked his life for Sanji. Luffy simply thanked him. The Sunny was soon blocked by enemy ships, but Wadatsumi and the Sun Pirates cleared a path.
As the Big Mom Pirates continued their assault, Jinbe decided to stay behind to help his former crew. Luffy agreed but told Jinbe to survive and meet them in Wano. The Sunny then sailed away from Cacao Island. With the Big Mom Pirates unable to follow, the crew successfully escaped Totto Land.
After some rest, Sanji cooked for the crew. He later found a raid suit from Niji, which Luffy and Chopper begged him not to throw away. When Carrot brought a newspaper, Luffy misread his new bounty, thinking it was 150 million. Brook corrected him, revealing it was actually 1.5 billion, shocking the entire crew.
As the Thousand Sunny sailed toward Wano, the crew read about the Levely in a newspaper. They soon encountered strange weather, an octopus, and a school of giant carp. After a rough ride up a waterfall, they reached a whirlpool.
Luffy helped his crew escape but was held back by the octopus. He and the Sunny later washed up on a beach in Kuri, where he woke up to a crab pinching his nose. He then encountered a sword-wielding baboon and a komainu.
While the animals fought, two Beasts Pirates spotted Luffy and tried to attack, but he easily defeated them and saved a kidnapped girl named Tama. One pirate ordered the baboon, Hihimaru, to attack, but Luffy stopped it with a glare. Tama then tamed Hihimaru using her kibi-dango ability.
She took Luffy to her master's house and offered him rice, despite her own food scarcity. Her master was upset, and Tama later fell sick from drinking contaminated river water. She revealed she was waiting for Ace, who had promised to return. Luffy told her Ace had died, causing her to faint.
Luffy decided to take Tama to a doctor and grabbed a sword called Nidai Kitetsu despite his master's warnings. As he and Tama traveled, she accused Luffy of lying about Ace’s death. They then reached a wasteland, where she passed out again. Luffy later found Zoro rescuing a woman from Kaido’s men. The two reunited but were soon confronted by Hawkins.
Hawkins predicted Luffy and Zoro had only a 19% chance of surviving the month. As they fought, Hawkins used his Devil Fruit to redirect damage to his subordinates. Luffy and Zoro eventually escaped, taking Tama to a tea shop in Okobore Town, where she was treated by a woman named Tsuru.
During their stay, Tsuru was attacked by Batman, and Tama was kidnapped by Gazelleman. Luffy, Zoro, and Kiku chased after him to Bakura Town. At the gates, Luffy knocked out enemy swordsmen with his Supreme King Haki. He then entered a sumo match against Urashima and defeated him. More enemies arrived, and Holed’em appeared, holding Tama hostage.
Holed’em accused them of being thieves, and Kiku warned Luffy about angering him. When Speed arrived with food, Luffy and Zoro decided to steal it. Luffy attacked Holed’em, grabbed Tama, and punched him with Red Hawk after learning he had harmed her. He then used Tama’s ability to tame Speed and rode her out of town. They reunited with Law, delivered food to Okobore Town, and Luffy promised Tama she would never go hungry again.
Luffy, Zoro, Law, and Kiku then traveled to Oden’s castle ruins, where they saw graves of the Kouzuki Family. Kin’emon and Momonosuke appeared, revealing they had traveled 20 years forward in time to escape Orochi. Kin’emon then explained Oden’s story and revealed their plan to attack Onigashima in two weeks. He assigned tasks to the group and gave them new clothes.
Suddenly, Kaido appeared above Okobore Town. Luffy, furious after seeing Oden Castle destroyed, attacked him with Gear 3, knocking him down. While rushing to check on his friends, he found Speed injured and learned Kaido had attacked Tama. Enraged, Luffy fought Kaido using Gear 4, but his attacks were ineffective. Kaido struck him down with one blow.
Kaido ordered Luffy to be imprisoned to break his spirit. As he was taken to Udon Prison, Luffy instinctively knocked out some guards with Supreme King Haki. The next day, he woke up in a cell next to Kid, both swearing revenge against Kaido.
Luffy and Kid competed at the prisoner mine, drawing the attention of Dobon, who tried to punish them but was quickly defeated. Luffy also rescued an injured old man, Hyougoro, and shared his meal tickets with him. Raizo informed Luffy about the heavily guarded keys to his Seastone handcuffs, while Caribou tried to form an alliance, which Luffy rejected.
Later, Luffy defended Hyougoro from a prison guard and was captured by Queen. He and Hyougoro were forced into death matches called the Sumo Inferno, where they had to fight while wearing deadly collars. Luffy used Supreme King Haki to defeat many opponents and tried to learn advanced Armament Haki. Hyougoro demonstrated the technique, and Luffy asked him to teach it.
One night, Luffy and Hyougoro ate stolen oshiruko and became fat. The next day, Luffy witnessed Shimotsuki Yasuie’s execution and learned about the SMILE fruit’s side effects. When Kid and Killer were tortured, Luffy tried to fight Queen but was overpowered. Suddenly, an amnesiac Big Mom arrived, defeated Queen, and turned her anger on Luffy after learning he ate the oshiruko. During the fight, Luffy unknowingly used advanced Armament Haki to remove his collar. Big Mom chased Luffy until Queen knocked her out, allowing the Beasts Pirates to take her away.
Luffy then fought the remaining guards, but the prisoners, fearing Kaido, refused to join him. Kawamatsu encouraged Luffy to inspire them. After being freed, Kawamatsu, Kiku, and Chopper helped Luffy fight. The prisoners, infected by the Mummy virus, attacked, but Luffy touched them to prove they had nothing left to fear. He defeated Babanuki, securing the prison.
Chopper treated Luffy and the infected. Luffy trained under Hyougoro, eventually mastering advanced Armament Haki. Two days before the battle, he returned to Amigasa Village with Tama and Chopper.
Luffy was thrilled when Hitetsu gave him new armor. He briefly worried about Jinbe but remained confident that he would arrive at Wano.
The day before the raid on Onigashima, Luffy trained his advanced Armament Haki, eager for his rematch with Kaido. On the day of the Fire Festival, he and his allies set sail, destroying a Beasts Pirates ship after learning Kaido had allied with Big Mom. As they prepared for battle, Luffy was overjoyed when Jinbe arrived to join the crew.
Disguised as a Beasts Pirate, Luffy infiltrated Onigashima but lost his temper when he saw food being wasted, remembering how much it meant to Tama. His outburst drew attention, leading to a fight against Apoo, where he and Zoro were forced to retreat. He later clashed with Ulti and Page One but was rescued by Yamato, who claimed to be Oden and wanted to fight alongside him.
Luffy and Yamato briefly fought before talking in secret. Yamato expressed a desire to join Luffy’s crew, but their conversation was cut short when they fell through the attic. As the battle raged on, Luffy freed Yamato from explosive cuffs, and they landed on the Performance Stage.
Big Mom confronted Luffy, mocking his goal. He declared he would defeat both her and Kaido. As he tried to reach the roof, he faced multiple obstacles, including Queen and the Numbers. After teaming up with X Drake, he made his way up, leaving Jinbe to handle Who’s-Who.
Reaching the roof, Luffy joined Zoro, Law, Kid, and Killer. He checked on the wounded samurai before launching a powerful attack, Gomu Gomu no Red Roc, injuring Kaido and shocking everyone. Kaido and Big Mom retaliated, but Luffy and the other captains stood firm, ready for the fight ahead.
Luffy and his allies continued their intense battle against Kaido and Big Mom. He landed strong attacks on Kaido but was eventually exhausted after using Gear 4, forcing Zoro to defend him. After regaining his strength, Luffy learned to coat his attacks with Supreme King Haki, allowing him to fight Kaido more effectively. However, he was still overpowered and knocked unconscious, falling into the sea.
Using the Voice of All Things, Luffy called for help, and the Heart Pirates rescued him. After regaining his strength with food, he reunited with Momonosuke, who had aged into an adult dragon. Luffy encouraged Momonosuke to fly him back to Onigashima, despite his fear of heights. Once there, he immediately attacked Kaido, fighting alongside Yamato.
During their battle, Luffy instructed Momonosuke to bite Kaido before landing another powerful hit. Declaring his determination to defeat Kaido, Luffy inspired his allies and split the sky in a massive clash of Supreme King Haki. He then told Yamato to protect Momonosuke while he faced Kaido alone.
As the fight continued, Luffy and Kaido traded powerful blows, enjoying the battle. Kaido even started drinking, and acknowledged Luffy’s strength and the challenge he presented.
As Luffy fought Kaido, the Emperor shifted through different drunken states, each making him more unpredictable. He landed heavy blows on Luffy, including a devastating attack that cracked Onigashima's roof. Luffy countered with Supreme King Haki-infused attacks, but Kaido kept adapting. When Big Mom was defeated, Kaido unleashed his rage, but Luffy responded by entering Gear 4: Snakeman and attacking with Gomu Gomu no Hydra.
Kaido eventually grabbed Luffy, flew high into the sky, and blasted him through Onigashima with Bolo Breath. Luffy barely survived by shifting into Boundman and countering with Over Kong Gun. As they clashed again, a CP0 agent interfered, restraining Luffy long enough for Kaido to land a decisive blow, knocking him out. Kaido, frustrated by outside interference, watched as Luffy's unconscious body began transforming.
Luffy awakened his Devil Fruit, gaining a new form—Gear 5. Laughing uncontrollably, he overwhelmed Kaido, turning his surroundings into rubber and swinging Kaido around like a toy. Even after Kaido swallowed him, Luffy bounced around inside and burst out. He then grew into a giant and used Kaido as a jump rope. Kaido countered with powerful strikes, eventually knocking Luffy out of his awakened form.
Despite this, Luffy refused to give up. He regained his Gear 5 state and sent Kaido crashing with a powerful punch. When Kaido stood back up, Luffy declared he would surpass him and become the Pirate King. As they continued fighting, Kaido warned that the castle was burning, but Luffy remained confident in his friends. He then grabbed a bolt of lightning, smiling as the battle raged on.
Luffy used the bolt of lightning to attack Kaido, but Kaido dodged and knocked him away. Luffy quickly returned, but Kaido struck him again, explaining that Haki, not just Devil Fruit powers, was the key to ruling the seas. As they fought, Luffy grabbed Kaido and held on despite Kaido's attempts to shake him off. Luffy then inflated his fist to an enormous size for a final attack.
Kaido coated himself in fire, claiming Luffy's attack wouldn’t land. However, Luffy, recalling his training with Hyogoro, struck Kaido with a massive punch, overpowering him and sending him crashing into the ground. The impact caused Kaido to fall into a lava pit, where he and Big Mom were caught in a volcanic eruption. With that, Luffy was declared the victor of the battle over Wano.
A week later, Luffy and Zoro woke up and celebrated. Luffy was surprised to see Momonosuke as an adult and joined in the festivities. During the celebration, Kid revealed the latest newspaper, which declared Luffy, alongside Shanks, Blackbeard, and Buggy, as one of the new Four Emperors.
Soon after, Admiral Ryokugyu arrived but was forced to retreat after sensing Shanks' powerful Haki. Yamato then decided to stay in Wano to protect it. Marco bid farewell, telling Luffy that Ace would be proud of him. Meanwhile, Robin revealed that Pluton was in Wano, but Luffy showed no interest in the weapon.
Before leaving, Luffy promised Tama she could join his crew if she became strong enough. At Tokage Port, Luffy, Law, and Kid chose different routes for their next journey. Luffy gifted Momonosuke a Straw Hat Jolly Roger, telling him to fly it if he ever needed help. As they set sail, Luffy invited Momonosuke, Kin’emon, and Yamato to join his crew anytime.
Finally, instead of taking the safe route down Wano, Luffy, Law, and Kid recklessly steered their ships over the waterfall, with Luffy’s ship suffering slight damage in the process.
After landing safely, Luffy was punished by Nami for his reckless actions but quickly moved on. He then read the news that Vivi was missing, Cobra was dead, and Sabo was accused of the murder. Upset, he wanted to rescue Vivi, but Zoro calmed him down. Robin also mentioned Buggy becoming an Emperor, which surprised Luffy. He later shared his dream with the crew, who reacted with shock and amusement, and they all agreed to find the final Road Poneglyph.
As they sailed toward their next destination, they encountered a massive warm eddy. Inside was Jewelry Bonney, whom Luffy tried to save before a giant Mecha-Shark attacked them, forcing Jinbe to dive into the ocean with them.
They ended up on Egghead Island, home to Vegapunk’s lab. Bonney revealed she wanted revenge on Vegapunk for turning her father into a cyborg. While exploring, they met Vegapunk's satellite, Atlas, who introduced them to futuristic machines. Luffy and the others ate their fill before being attacked by a police Pacifista, which Bonney mistook for her father. She used her Devil Fruit powers to change their ages and escape.
Continuing their exploration, they found an old giant mecha. The real Vegapunk appeared, and after some conversation, he asked Luffy to take him off Egghead, revealing that his research had made him a target of the World Government. Luffy agreed because he liked Vegapunk’s funny head. Meanwhile, CP0 arrived, and Luffy fought Rob Lucci in Gear 5, defeating him with help from Sentomaru. As Sentomaru was injured, Luffy and his group took the Vacuum Rocket to the Labophase.
Once there, Bonney ran off to find Vegapunk, and Luffy and Chopper followed. They eventually reunited with the rest of the crew but lost track of Bonney and Vegapunk. While searching, they discovered the security system had been compromised, and there was an unknown enemy in the Labophase. Suddenly, Seraphim S-Hawk and S-Bear attacked, ignoring Shaka’s orders, meaning someone had turned them against the crew.
Luffy and Zoro refused to free Lucci and Kaku from their Seastone shackles, knowing they were lying about teaming up against the Seraphim. However, Luffy eventually agreed, warning them not to target his friends. Luffy and Lucci fought S-Bear, while Zoro and Kaku took on S-Hawk. Despite their efforts, the Seraphim barely took any damage. Zoro noticed their physiology was similar to King, a Lunarian.
Learning that their strength depended on the flames on their backs, the group tried to weaken them. S-Hawk suddenly disappeared, prompting Zoro to chase after it. Meanwhile, Luffy asked S-Snake to undo the petrification on his friends, which she did due to her fondness for him.
The next day, the traitor York was captured and forced to speak with the Five Elders. When she revealed the Straw Hats had taken her hostage, Luffy used this to demand the Marines retreat. Robin stopped him from revealing too much.
Later, when Vegapunk mentioned Elbaph as a possible destination, Luffy and Usopp got excited. The group planned to escape Egghead using Vegaforce-01 to carry the Sunny past the Marine fleet before using a Coup de Burst. While heading to the ship, Luffy sensed Kizaru arriving.
Kizaru quickly defeated Sentomaru and warped to the Labophase. Luffy intercepted him, declaring that he and his crew were far stronger than before. In Snake-Man form, Luffy barraged Kizaru with punches, but Kizaru evaded and countered with a light-speed kick, sending Luffy crashing through Vegaforce-01. The Sunny fell, and Luffy burned himself passing through the Frontier Dome on his way back. As Kizaru prepared to kill Vegapunk, Luffy reappeared in Gear 5 and grabbed him.
Luffy tossed Kizaru off the island but was soon overwhelmed by Kizaru’s light clones. While Luffy fought them off, one clone targeted his crew, and another aimed at Vegapunk. Luffy took a laser blast to protect Vegapunk and resumed fighting Kizaru. However, Kizaru teleported away, preventing Vegapunk from escaping. Luffy landed a critical hit on Kizaru but was exhausted and collapsed.
Saturn seized the moment to attack Luffy, but Franky saved him. Saturn remarked on the crew's loyalty and dismissed Luffy and Bonney’s presence as unimportant. Luffy, starving, was unexpectedly given food by Kizaru at high speed.
Before the Marines could restrain him with Seastone cuffs, Kuma arrived, saved Bonney, and attacked Saturn. In the chaos, Luffy vanished. Later, the Marines found him near the food dispensers, still bloated from overeating.
Luffy activated Gear 5 again and saved Kuma and Bonney from Kizaru by punching him away. He turned the ground rubbery to cushion their landing, shaking the island in the process. Laughing in his Nika pose, Luffy surprised Bonney, who realized he was the Sun God Nika.
She asked him to show her a real punch and avenge Vegapunk, who had been stabbed by Saturn. Luffy agreed and unleashed a powerful attack, sending Saturn flying. Kizaru tried to attack Bonney and Vegapunk but was blocked by Sanji, leading to a showdown with Luffy and Sanji.
As Saturn recovered in his beast form, he attacked with venom-coated legs. Luffy dodged and told Sanji to take Vegapunk to safety. Kizaru, however, impaled Vegapunk before Sanji could escape. Enraged, Luffy grew massive, grabbed Kizaru and Saturn, and slammed them together.
He threw Kizaru into a Marine ship, but Saturn returned, summoning the other Five Elders in their awakened Zoan forms. One of them, a giant sandworm, swallowed Luffy, but Dorry and Brogy arrived just in time, slicing it open and freeing him.
The giants were happy to see Luffy again, noting his resemblance to a god from Elbaf. As they planned to escape, Warcury attacked with Supreme King Haki, briefly stripping Luffy of his features before restoring them. When Saturn fired venom balls at them, Luffy used a makeshift baseball bat to hit them back, causing explosions. Realizing the Elders were immortal, Luffy told the giants they had to run.
Ju Peter tried to suck them in with a vortex-like mouth, but Luffy threw a building into it to stop him. However, he exhausted his stamina and reverted to normal. Brogy revived him with food, and Luffy attempted to attack Warcury, but his skin was too tough, injuring Luffy’s hand. Forced to flee again, they finally reached the giants’ ship and jumped aboard as it departed Egghead.
Onboard, Luffy ate to regain strength, but Marcus Mars attacked, setting part of the ship on fire. As Mars declared they wouldn’t escape, Luffy transformed into Gear 5 and asked Bonney for help. She hesitated, but after Luffy encouraged her, she awakened her powers, growing giant and taking on a form similar to his.
Luffy was excited about the fight and Bonney’s new powers, inspiring the giants while scaring the Marines. Mars attacked with an energy beam, burning Luffy, but Luffy countered by having his allies hit him with Haki while he grabbed Mars.
Using Gomu Gomu no Dawn Balloon, he blasted Mars far away. Ju Peter tried to stop their escape by sucking in the ship, but Luffy struck him back. However, Warcury rushed in to block them—until Emet suddenly appeared, punching Warcury away and shocking Luffy.
Emet called Luffy "Joy Boy" and promised to fight for him. However, its weapons failed, and it was badly damaged. Saturn then leaped onto the ship, determined to capture Bonney and Kuma. He attacked with his venomous legs, but Luffy protected Bonney until she recovered.
Bonney then joined Luffy, and together, they unleashed a powerful attack that blasted Saturn off the ship. Meanwhile, Vegapunk’s broadcast continued, revealing that the fate of the world depended on whoever found the One Piece.
Luffy turned to Emet and saw it badly damaged. Emet apologized for mistaking him for Joy Boy and asked for his name. When Luffy shouted it, Emet noticed the "D." in his name and released a massive burst of Joy Boy’s Haki.
The explosion of energy forced most of the Five Elders back to Mary Geoise, knocked out Marines, and cleared the way for escape. The Sunny landed nearby, and when Luffy’s crew asked what happened, he simply said he didn’t know. He thanked Emet, but the machine was already powerless. Exhausted, Luffy collapsed onto the Sunny, where Nami held him as the giants celebrated their escape.
While partying, Brogy lifted Luffy, but Luffy weakly asked them to wait until he regained his strength. The giants paused the celebration, and Luffy, thinking he had failed to save Vegapunk, ate while crying. Later, Lilith woke up and told him that Vegapunk hadn’t truly died—their mission was a success. Luffy and his crew were shocked but relieved. Revitalized, Luffy joined the giants, celebrating with plenty of food, knowing he had kept his promise to Vegapunk.
As the party continued, Luffy was surprised that Dorry and Brogy’s duel was only on hold, not canceled. Two days later, Luffy, Sanji, Zoro, Usopp, Nami, and the Thousand Sunny mysteriously disappeared, shocking everyone.
They had been taken by Muginn to Road, a member of the New Giant Warrior Pirates, who was furious that his captain had pledged loyalty to Luffy. As a test, Road kept the Straw Hats asleep and placed them in the Land of Gods.
Luffy woke up and found Zoro and Sanji. The three hunted and ate a large rabbit before heading to Bigstein Castle, where they saved Usopp and Nami from a giant cat that had turned into a lion. After defeating it, they set out to find their missing crewmates and ship.
While exploring, they met a man who told them the Sun God (actually Road in disguise) ruled the Land of Gods. Luffy, curious, ran off to find the Sun God’s temple, only to crash into a giant one-way mirror—revealing the Land of Gods was artificial. After rescuing Chopper, the crew fought and easily defeated the temple's guardians, with Luffy using Gear 5 to take down Hilmungardr.
The Sun God appeared, furious at the damage caused, and a chase began. The Straw Hats escaped on the cat they had beaten earlier while the Sun God tried to trap them with a net. Zoro and Sanji broke free, and Nami knocked out the Sun God using Zeus, while Luffy shattered a wall with Gear 4, revealing the outside world.
Just as they left, they narrowly avoided Goldberg, Gerd, and her pet, Piper. Luffy then sensed something strange and leaped off a bridge, landing in the wilderness of Elbaph, where he met the giant Loki, who declared he would destroy the world.
Luffy ignored Loki’s threats and excitedly celebrated finally reaching Elbaph. Annoyed, Loki demanded that Luffy listen to him, explaining that he was tied to Elbaph’s treasure tree and promising to destroy any pirate crew Luffy chose if freed by dawn. He also revealed they were in Elbaph’s Underworld, where all the beasts served him.
Instead of being afraid, Luffy quickly befriended the creatures. Meanwhile, some of Loki’s servants apologized for fainting due to Shanks' earlier presence. Hearing Shanks’ name, Luffy perked up, surprising Loki, who tested Luffy by insulting Shanks. Enraged, Luffy attacked, barely missing, forcing Loki to quickly apologize. When Luffy asked why Shanks was on Elbaph, Loki refused to answer unless Luffy made a deal—which he apparently did.
Later, Luffy returned to the bridge, where Goldberg and Gerd found him. Gerd thought Luffy was cute, and when asked about his time in the Underworld, he nervously avoided answering.
Eventually, they reached the end of the bridge and reunited with the Straw Hats, who had just defeated Road again. Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper excitedly ran off to see the village in Elbaph’s Sun Level, where the rest of their crew arrived by riding a rainbow, shocking Luffy.
Along with the Straw Hats and Giant Warrior Pirates, the last two New Giant Warrior Pirates members arrived, leading to a brief meeting with Hajrudin. He praised Luffy but mistakenly believed he had defeated Big Mom, confusing Luffy. Though Hajrudin declared a feast, the Straw Hats prioritized Robin’s reunion with Jaguar D. Saul and set off in a Svarr piloted by Gerd. Robin told Luffy he didn’t need to come, but Luffy insisted, wanting to pay his respects—just like Ace did with Shanks.
At Warrior’s Spring, Luffy rushed to find Saul, eager to return to the feast. Nami had to hold him back so Robin could have a proper reunion. When they were told Saul had collapsed, Luffy got mad, only to realize it was a joke. Robin and Saul embraced, making Luffy smile while most of the crew teared up.
After the reunion, Luffy awkwardly thanked Saul in an old-fashioned way, confusing everyone. Lilith then introduced a perfect Vegapunk clone, shocking Luffy. Saul’s assistant, Ange, tried introducing herself, but Luffy, Usopp, and Zoro ran off to play with giant children, only to be disappointed that they weren’t warrior-like. Ripley, a teacher, explained that due to King Harald’s ideals, Elbaph’s giants now prioritized trade over war. He was also disappointed that Luffy wasn’t in Gear 5.
Luffy and Usopp played on a giant swing with the children, but ended up scaring them, leading to Nami punishing them. Luffy was disappointed that the kids lacked a warrior spirit until Colon attacked him from behind. Luffy dodged and retaliated, but missed. Colon, excited to meet an Emperor, impressed Luffy with his fighting spirit.
Later, Luffy and his crew returned to Western Village for the party. Luffy was happy to see Stansen, a giant he helped on Sabaody, now one of his subordinates. He was also shocked by the massive Jarul and the sword through his helmet. During the banquet, Jarul explained Nika's history in Elbaph, and Luffy was surprised by Nika’s similarities to himself. When Shanks was mentioned, Luffy was even more shocked to hear he had captured Loki.
Zoro suspected Luffy had been tricked by Loki, so he, Luffy, and Nami went to Aurust Castle to check. They found the castle in ruins and questioned Road, who didn’t know where Loki’s keys were.
Exploring further, Luffy discovered a giant skull and was stunned to learn King Harald once had horns. The guards then revealed that Shanks had attacked them, which Luffy refused to believe. A theory emerged that Shanks might have a sibling, though Luffy didn’t recall him mentioning one.
Inside, they found a strange Magic Circle. As they discussed its meaning, a voice echoed through the room, terrifying Road. Before they could react, a massive axe blocked their escape.
The attacker, Ya-san—actually Scopper Gaban—introduced himself as Ripley’s lover and Colon’s father. Gaban’s playful nature reminded Luffy of Sanji. When Luffy accidentally revealed their plan to free Loki, Gaban laughed and warned them about Loki’s danger. He then challenged Luffy to a fight for the key.
Luffy tried to avoid fighting, but Gaban provoked him. After failing to grab the key multiple times, Gaban suddenly attacked with axes, forcing Zoro to step in. Seeing no choice, Luffy activated Gear 5, but before they could strike, Gaban surrendered, handing over the key. He requested the Straw Hats visit him before leaving Elbaph, which they reluctantly agreed to.
Luffy and Zoro returned to the Underworld and found a wounded Loki. Luffy rushed to free him, but Zoro, suspecting a trick, attacked Loki to test him. Seeing Loki was truly injured, Zoro released only three of his four shackles as a precaution.
Luffy went to find a doctor but was interrupted when the New Giant Warrior Pirates crash-landed nearby. Hajrudin begged them not to free Loki, warning of his deception. Unfortunately, it was too late—Loki was already standing.
Loki, wielding his hammer, demonstrated his power by striking the Adam Tree, summoning a bolt of lightning that set it ablaze. He threatened the Sun World's people, forcing Luffy to attack. At Zoro’s request, Luffy struck Loki with a weak punch, which was enough to knock him out due to his injuries. Luffy then asked Hajrudin to spare Loki, wanting to settle things later. Hajrudin reluctantly agreed, and Gerd began treating Loki’s wounds.
As she worked, Gerd revealed three things: Loki’s recovery would take months, taking him to the village was impossible since the villagers wanted him dead, and his horns were real, surprising Luffy. Hajrudin, overwhelmed with rage, tried to kill Loki for murdering their father. Everyone held him back as Loki cryptically hinted that his actions weren’t out of hatred, leaving everyone confused.
The characteristics that define Luffy the most are his complete lack of fear, steadfast self-confidence, and apparent lack of common sense. Despite this, Luffy has a talent for seeing right to the core of a situation and is frequently able to accurately point out a person's character flaws, such as Koby's cowardice or Kuro's weakness as a pirate.
He repeatedly tells his dream to rule as the Pirate King and devotes his entire soul to that goal, demonstrating his extreme ambition. Despite having a childish mindset, he frequently understands the core of the issue and can identify the most straightforward solution.
Luffy resents weak people beyond everything things, though not necessarily in a physical sense. He did admit to Koby that he "hates people like him" because of the cowardly traits and frequent usage of the word "it's impossible" by Koby. On the other hand, he admires people who work hard to overcome their limits and has grown to enjoy Koby as a result of seeing him risk his life.
He strongly states that he doesn't want to be a hero even though he admires heroic individuals. His main complaint is that heroes are basically fully unselfish, and Luffy doesn't truly recognize that quality. Luffy sleeps a lot. Due to his carelessness and even craziness, he has become known to be a very dangerous person.
Despite this, Luffy has also developed his reputation for helping his friends and innocent people against cruel people, and usually going out of his way to save them, unlike other pirates. He believes the Pirate King has the most freedom that there is in the entire globe. Luffy wants to be able to do whatever he likes and rejects being anyone's king or boss.
He is completely happy with his position as captain and initially opposes to taking command of the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. He has no desire to know One Piece's current location until he finds it himself and told his crew that he would quit being a pirate if they found out the One Piece’s location from Rayleigh. Luffy has been known to laugh in the face of danger and enter potentially dangerous situations while smiling brightly.
He always sees the good in difficult situations or anything that goes wrong, and he approaches life with a positive attitude. Unlike other people, Luffy does not hesitate to point out someone's flaws openly. This usually turns out to be advantageous because he has motivated many people to be their friends and enemies to become better. When fighting, Luffy's opponents usually think he is making fun of them because of his easygoing attitude and simple-minded words.
As a result, many of his enemies become angry and charge at him. Luffy shares the trait of not being afraid of death with those who have the middle initial D. He will frequently say that it doesn't matter if he succeeds or fails in his adventures. Luffy has strong leadership qualities, which he usually lacks and which causes him to assign his captain duties to another crew member.
When his crewmates are injured, Luffy is extremely loyal to them and can lose his cool quickly. Even if it means breaking a promise to his friends, Luffy is prepared to use extreme measures to take revenge and defend those close to him. According to Luffy, everyone should be loyal to their friends. He values people who are willing to sacrifice their lives for protecting the things that are close to them.
Even if Luffy is seriously injured he makes sure that his crew and allies get treated first even if he’s severely injured. Luffy shows pride in his ship and flag and has a close bond with the Going Merry because, when he was giving it a Viking funeral, he sobbed in regret over how it had collapsed due to their recklessness. The one thing that Luffy does not allow is for someone or something to get involved in another person's fight. Luffy is not embarrassed to express his feelings.
Luffy is aware of starvation, and he hates food wastage. He stole fresh food supplies for the Okobore Town residents and for Tama, who had to endure years of starvation due to Orochi and Kaidou. Luffy is confident in his skills and can challenge anyone in combat and has faced many strong opponents.
Just like all the other D’s, Luffy is known for his immense gluttony despite his appearance. Despite his love for combat, Luffy also declines to engage in combat with someone he does not personally see as an opponent and prefers to find a solution or leave the scene instead.
There were times when Luffy appeared to enjoy defeating his enemies. Furthermore, he refused to let his enemies get away with their crimes and, regardless of what others may say, he will take revenge on them. Luffy can also be very stubborn.
He tends to disregard and go against his crew and takes the dangerous route for their travel. When he is set on recruiting someone, he is ready to go to great lengths to recruit them even if they refuse.
Luffy possess an immense amount of physical strength that he got through extensive training that he was put through by Garp. Luffy uses his Gears to increase his physical strength and that helps him subdue powerful enemies like.
Luffy also has a lot of speed, agility and reflexes. This is seen when he escaped a huge explosion during battles before he could get caught up in the blasts. He can even dodge attacks while he is using Gear 3. As Luffy can use Kenbunshoku Haki he can foresee his enemies movements and dodge those attacks quite easily.
Luffy is seen to be able to take in immense amounts of physical damage and is known for his strong durability and willpower due to the rigorous training that he was put through by his grandfather.
Luffy ate the Gomu Gomu no Mi fruit as a child which gave him the properties of rubber. He is able to stretch any part of his body and he can enhance his body parts around spinning them. As he is made of rubber is is immune to lightning and can't be harmed by blunt attacks. Over the course of years, Luffy has been able to train and develop his skills which has allowed him to create his Gears which are basically special techniques that are related to his devil fruit.
Luffy has a total of 6 gears (Three being subforms of Gear 4) and are divided into four levels. These Gears have become stronger over time and give Luffy huge amounts of power.
Gear 2 was first introduced during the Enies Lobby Arc. In this gear Luffy increases the speed of his blood and due to the rubber nature of his blood vessels and organs, his body can withstand the pressure. This allows his body to pump oxygen and nutrients throughout his body. It also increases Luffy's physical strength and gives him a lot of speed and defensive powers.
Luffy activates this mode by pumping blood throughout his legs to activate the mode throughout his body. Later on he can be seen to be able to activate Gear 2 on a selected body part. By combining his haki and Gear 2, he is able to punch his opponents with speed and force and this makes his fist turn into flames which Luffy named Red Hawk. Later on in the series, his Red Hawk became so strong that he could injure even kaido during their battle in Onigashima.
Gear 3 was also introduced during the Enies Lobby Arc. This mode is activated when Luffy blows massive amounts of air into his thumb and can inflate the bones of a particular body part and make it huge. These body parts are capable of causing damage on a huge scale and can even destroy buildings. His power increases when he combines it with Busoshoku Haki and later on he even combines it with Haoshoku Haki.
At first Luffy used to turn into a child and his fighting abilities were limited temporarily after he used this mode. However, after the time-skip, where he spent two years training, Luffy has managed to negate this side-effect.
Luffy learned Gear 4 during his 2 year training period and was seen using it during the Dressrosa Arc. Luffy activates this mode by blowing into his arm and inflates his muscles and then coats it with Busoshoku Haki. Gear 4 has three forms aka sub forms.
This form makes his skin composition like that of a rubber ball which causes him to bounce all the time. Luffy is able to retract his hands and legs which help him unleash devastating attacks and even change directions of his attacks. His defense also increases and the majority of the attacks bounce off him.
This form makes Luffy become much bigger and increase his defense abilities. This also allows him to use his body as a weapon and recoil from his enemies' attack and blast them away.
This is the last sub form of Gear 4 where Luffy turns a bit slimmer and focuses more on the offense. This form doesn't have defense abilities like the previous two forms. Despite that, he has a huge increase in attack speed and can change the direction of his attacks so that he can hurt his enemies from all directions.
However, as strong Luffy’s Gear 4 is, he is usually not able to use haki for ten minutes after this mode and using it a lot of times can take a huge toll on his body.
Gear 5 is the recent mode that Luffy activated but this has only occurred in the manga and has yet to be animated. This mode was a result of Luffy awakening his Devil Fruit for the first time since the Blank Era.
In this mode, Luffy has many new abilities like being able to manipulate the shape and size of his body instead of focusing more on hardening his body with Busoshoku Haki. He looks more cartoon-like while fighting. He is able to give his surroundings rubber like properties also which helped him deflect Kaido's Bolo Breath. He is also able to stretch any object he touches. His power has the characteristics of both Paramecia and Zoan-type Devil Fruit.
Luffy was one of the few people who could use all three types of haki. He knew how to use the Hoashoku Haki, which allows the users to exert their willpower over others.
He can also use the Busoshoku Haki, which allows users to use their spiritual energy to create invisible armor around themselves, giving them offensive and defensive capabilities. He is quite proficient in using it and very skilled at it too.
Lastly, Luffy even possessed the Kenbunshoku Haki, which allows the users to use the sixth sense to sense the presence, strength, and emotions of others. It even gave the user prerogative abilities.
Luffy also the ability to 'hear voices of all things' which helped them understand Zunesha and the Sea Beasts in Fish-Man Island.
