Thirty-one years ago on the island of Downs in the North Blue, a 9-year-old Pica, alongside Trebol, Diamante, and Vergo, became close friends with a young Donquixote Doflamingo. The group was captivated by Doflamingo's impressive Haoshoku Haki, leading them to appoint him as their leader. This decision marked the beginning of their unwavering loyalty and commitment to making Doflamingo the Pirate King.
Their devotion knew no bounds, as evidenced by their extreme actions. They were prepared to eliminate anyone who even slightly offended Doflamingo, going so far as to burn down an entire town due to a pavement issue that caused Doflamingo to trip.
Pica served as an officer in the Donquixote Pirates for a significant period, even before Trafalgar Law joined the crew sixteen years ago. Pica's authority was evident when Buffalo, a crew member, mocked Pica's voice and faced torture as a consequence.
As the crew expanded their influence into the Grand Line after Law's official induction, they engaged in various activities, including looting, business deals, and bounty collection. However, their journey took a turn when they discovered Law's sickness, the Amber Lead Syndrome, during a meal at Spider Miles in the North Blue. This revelation added a new dimension to their collective narrative.
One day, Corazon suddenly left the crew and took Law with him. Six months later, Pica had a meeting with Diamante, Trebol, and Doflamingo. They noticed that the Marines were not tracking them during Corazon's absence and expressed their suspicion. The crew also planned to steal the Ope Ope no Mi during a trade on Rubeck Island and meet Corazon on Swallow Island three days before the exchange.
They later arrived at Minion Island, where the Barrels Pirates, who had the Ope Ope no Mi, were based. Vergo informed them of Corazon's betrayal. While Doflamingo covered part of the island with his birdcage, the Donquixote Pirates raided the Barrels Pirates' hideout.
When they found Corazon, they attacked him until Doflamingo arrived. Buffalo and Baby 5 later told Doflamingo that the Marines took custody of a boy, possibly Law. Thinking Law was in custody, they left Corazon for dead and prepared to leave. Tsuru's squadron then fired upon them.
A year later, the Donquixote Pirates held an auction for the Goru Goru no Mi in the anime. Gild Tesoro went to the auction, caused chaos, and gained possession of the Devil Fruit. Doflamingo got angry and sent assassins to kill Tesoro, but they all failed.
Pica was present when Doflamingo took over Dressrosa, helping destroy the royal army after Doflamingo made Riku Doldo III appear as a villain to the citizens.
At the palace, Pica was with Diamante and Trebol when Doflamingo gave Diamante the Mera Mera no Mi for the tournament. When Franky tried to breach the Toys House, Pica heard the commotion through a Den Den Mushi.
Later, Pica intercepted Monkey D. Luffy, Zoro, and Viola at the rampart tower B-1 by emerging from the stone walls. Using his rock-assimilating abilities, he tried to crush them with the palace walls. Luffy and Viola escaped while Zoro stayed behind to fight Pica. During the time the toys transformed back, Pica left his battle with Zoro.
Pica went to the second-floor suite room after Kyros seemingly decapitated Doflamingo. Holding Doflamingo's body and severed head, Doflamingo revealed he was still alive. The decapitated Doflamingo was only a copy. After the real Doflamingo appeared and fought Luffy, Pica threw them out of the palace.
When Doflamingo trapped everyone on Dressrosa with his "birdcage," Pica changed the landscape, moving the royal palace and raising the SMILE Factory to the surface. During the Donquixote Pirates' strategy meeting, Pica volunteered to deal with the Straw Hat Pirates and Fujitora. An insult about his voice angered him, and after Baby 5 shot the mocker, Pica fused with the stones of Dressrosa, becoming a giant stone golem.
While searching for Doflamingo's enemies, Luffy laughed at Pica's voice, infuriating him. Pica tried to attack Luffy, Zoro, and Law, but when he attempted to strike, Chinjao and Elizabello II attacked together, breaking his giant stone hand.
Pica attacked with his other arm, forcing Luffy's allies to retreat. He then noticed Luffy, Zoro, Law, Abdullah, Jeet, and Ucy climbing on his arm. Pica regrew the shattered arm and prepared to attack Luffy again. In response, Luffy shattered Pica's stone head with Grizzly Magnum. Zoro found Pica's real body, and it appeared in front of Luffy's group. Pica drew his sword to attack the group on Ucy, but Luffy carried the bull, evading the strike. Zoro intercepted Pica, starting another battle.
As the fight continued, Zoro handled Pica with relative ease. Pica and Zoro noticed Nico Robin, Rebecca, and Bartolomeo approaching from the sky. Pica prepared to attack them with a stone statue, but Zoro used Senhachiju Pound Ho to halt Pica's attack and injure him. Zoro then declared his goal to become the greatest swordsman. Enraged, Pica charged at Zoro, determined not to let him leave alive.
Eventually, Pica sent Zoro crashing into the second level of the New King's Plateau. Inhabiting the plateau, Pica, angered by Zoro's mockery of his laugh, reshaped the plateau. Dellinger scolded Pica for forgetting other officers were on the plateau.
Pica found Diamante defeated in the Sunflower Field, mocked him, and questioned Kyros and Rebecca about King Riku. He went back to Zoro on the second level, attacked the wounded, and asked about the Old King's Plateau. Then, angry with Zoro's answers, he headed to the plateau to kill King Riku.
As Pica approached, he was cheered by Donquixote's followers. He clashed with Riku, who tried to stop the violence. Pica argued a king must defeat enemies and dismissed Riku's history lesson. Zoro intervened in time and cut Pica in half.
After Doflamingo's defeat, Pica and his crew were arrested by the Marines.
Pica is a reserved and sensitive individual, largely due to his high-pitched voice, which he is self-conscious about. He becomes extremely upset if mocked for it and reacts violently, even resorting to brutal measures. Despite this, he takes pride in his sword and reacts strongly to insults about his laughter.
His loyalty to Doflamingo is unwavering, as seen when he abandoned his battle to protect Doflamingo. Pica considers his crew as family and is committed to ensuring their safety. He firmly believes in Doflamingo's claim to be the rightful king of Dressrosa.
Pica is confident in his Devil Fruit abilities and Haki, and believes that he is capable of single-handedly defeating Dressrosa's enemies. His arrogance, however, leads to underestimating opponents, as seen in his encounter with Zoro.
While generally loyal, there are instances where Pica's anger clouds his judgment, potentially endangering his crew. He can be dishonest and ruthless, attacking wounded gladiators without hesitation.
Pica is a tall, intimidating man with a muscular build. Even as a child, he had a hulking frame and wore makeshift armor. As an adult, he replaced it with real golden armor and black gloves. He has long lavender hair, yellow eyes, and a straight mustache under his mask.
His shoulders have three spikes on each blade, a result of wearing shoulder guards since puberty. He is considerably taller than normal people and has spade tattoos on both shoulders.
Pica wears a yellow-gold spiked helmet with a four-pointed star covering his eyes. He has dark gauntlets, a metallic belt with a spade emblem, and a pteruges skirt.
He wears light-colored greaves, black gloves, and a spade-shaped chest plate with leather straps. He is the most muscular among the Donquixote Pirates and has large arms and hands adorned with black gloves.
As a child, he had a large frame and wore a small vest, tattered shorts, and no shoes.
Pica is a top member of the Donquixote Pirates, holding the Spade seat just below Doflamingo. He leads the Pica Army with subordinates Gladius, Buffalo, and Baby 5. Even as a 9-year-old, Pica was strong, burning down a town with other kids. At 30, he, along with Trebol and Diamante, defeated the entire Dressrosa army.
Pica is an incredibly strong pirate, known for his immense size. He can easily lift a giant katana that is even bigger than himself. Despite his size, Pica is skilled in swordsmanship and can hold his own against formidable opponents like Zoro.
In addition to his physical strength, Pica can use two types of Haki. He can use Busoshoku Haki to create a protective coating around his body, making him confident in defending against attacks. However, Zoro has a stronger version of this Haki and was able to cut through Pica's defenses.
Pica also can use Kenbunshoku Haki, which allows him to sense the presence and movements of others.
Pica ate the Ishi Ishi no Mi (Stone-Stone Fruit), a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit. This fruit lets him merge with any stone he touches and control it. If he's in a place made entirely of stone, he can move through it as if it were water.
His control over stone goes beyond just moving through it. He can change the shape of the stone environment however he wants. One impressive feat is that he can turn the stone around him into a massive stone golem, making him a powerful and versatile opponent.
Pica's Devil Fruit power not only allows him to blend with stone but also manipulate it in various ways.
Pica has a deep-rooted loyalty to Doflamingo, having followed him for over thirty years. Pica, along with the other elite officers, serves Doflamingo faithfully. Their relationship is marked by mutual respect, with Pica going to great lengths to protect his captain, such as abandoning his battle with Zoro when Kyros attacked Doflamingo. In return, Doflamingo values Pica's loyalty and is protective of him, ready to punish anyone who mocks Pica's voice.
Despite working alongside Diamante for 31 years and holding each other in high regard, Pica does not hesitate to insult Diamante after his defeat by Kyros. This suggests a complex relationship with moments of camaraderie as well as tension. Diamante, in turn, is angered by a soldier giggling at Pica's voice.
Pica and Trebol, alongside Diamante and Vergo, have a longstanding working relationship under Doflamingo. Although not much interaction is explicitly shown, their collaboration is portrayed as faithful and akin to family.
Baby 5 is an officer directly under Pica, and they hold each other in high regard. Pica appreciates Baby 5's swift action in silencing a soldier who giggled at his voice. However, when Baby 5 leaves the Donquixote Pirates due to her newfound love for Sai, Pica interprets this as betrayal and attempts to kill her without allowing her to explain her actions.
Buffalo, initially making fun of Pica's voice when he joined the crew, faced punishment by torture. Despite this rocky start, Buffalo later becomes an officer in Pica's division.
Pica shows no compassion for members outside the officer tier. He is willing to violently murder soldiers who mock his voice, indicating a lack of tolerance for disrespect. During moments of anger, he neglects the safety of soldiers and even some officers, dropping his giant fist without regard for their well-being.
Initially underestimating Luffy, Pica sees him as someone he can eliminate without troubling his captain, Doflamingo. However, Pica develops a personal hatred for Luffy after the pirate mocks his high-pitched voice.
Pica and Zoro engage in multiple battles, with Pica displaying a strong intent to kill him. Zoro's constant mockery of Pica's voice and laugh fuels the animosity between them. Pica, acknowledging Zoro's superiority in combat, attempts to avoid him to focus on weaker enemies, which infuriates Zoro. Eventually, Zoro catches up to Pica, leading to a confrontation where Zoro proves his Haki is superior, defeating him.
Pica actively hates Riku Doldo III due to his belief that Doflamingo is the true king of Dressrosa. Riku becomes Pica's number one target when he discovers his location. Pica hurls insults at Riku, deeming him unfit to be king.
In addition to the One Piece manga and its anime adaptation, Pica also appears in One Piece: Great Pirate Colosseum as a supporting character, in One Piece Odyssey as an enemy, and in One Piece: Burning Blood as a non-playable character.
Pica's name translates to "spade" in Spanish, Bulgarian, Russian, and Catalan, fitting the card suit motif of Doflamingo's elite officers.
As the second character with a spade symbol, after Ace, and preceding the non-canon Bear King of the Trump Siblings, Pica continues the theme.
Similar to Vergo and Donquixote Rosinante being called "Corazon" while occupying the Heart seat, "Pica" is likely a code name rather than the character's real name.
Pica shares similarities with the Greek half-giant Antaeus, both being invincible while in contact with the ground and meeting their defeat in the air.
Pica's favorite food is stone bowl bibimbap.
