Grus was born in the West Blue, 29 years ago, into a wealthy family. As a child, Grus always looked down wherever he walked, bumping into walls, cows, people, even pirates. He suffered serious injuries during these pirate encounters, so his mother ordered him to wear a cap with a long visor to prevent him from running into objects in front of him. Grus ultimately enlisted in the Marines two or more years ago, and as a Marine recruit, he attended the same classes as Koby and Helmeppo. He eventually joined SWORD after being promoted to rear admiral.
While the Levely was going on, Grus and his team were patrolling Dressrosa when he found and arrested Charlotte Lola, believing her to be the Fire Tank Pirates' Chiffon (Lola's twin sister). Grus defeated Gotti when he tried to save her. But ultimately, Gotti managed to release Lola by carrying out a hit-and-run on Grus's vessel in one of Dressrosa's harbors. The Fire Tank Pirates then fled into the water, and Grus was spotted near the harbor.
Helmeppo and Hibari approached Grus a few weeks after Marshall D. Teach kidnapped Koby, hoping to persuade him to take action to do something about Koby's circumstances, either by deploying a Seraphim to battle the Blackbeard Pirates or by invading Hachinosu. Given the absurdity of both requests, Grus asked them to maintain their composure for the time being and stated that SWORD was currently unable to function because Drake's whereabouts were unknown.
Ultimately, Grus and his fellow SWORD accompanied Vice-Admiral Garp in the invasion of Hachinose to save Koby. Later, he watched with Kujaku as Koby came toward the battleship, jealously remarking that Koby was a "Hero of the Navy" and that he would sabotage Koby. When Garp, Helmeppo, and Koby fought off the pirates on Hachinosu, Grus briefly asked him if he was also considered a part of the navy's future.
Koby fled to save what looked to be a civilian, but Grus warned him that it was a trap. Garp took a stab from the Blackbeard pirate Shiryu to save Koby which left Grus and Helmeppo shocked. Garp directed Koby to demolish Pizarros's island-sized hand while instructing Grus to defend the ship from any falling debris as the two of them leapt into action concurrently with Pizarro's effort to use his devil fruit ability to destroy the marine ship transporting their men.
Grus was doubtful of Koby's ability to destroy the giant hand by asking whether he had any bombs on him. However, Koby succeeded in doing so with a strong Haki impact, and Grus used "Gunyo no Su" to make a clay web to catch any debris that might fall onto the ship. When Grus and Koby boarded, Garp informed them that he would remain behind and risk his life to make sure the others could escape safely. Grus was moved to tears by Garp's actions when he told them they were the Marines' future.
The troop eventually arrived at the Marine GS General Hospital to receive medical care. They listened to the global broadcast of Vegapunk during this period. Grus agreed with Koby that there was a concerning conclusion to the message.
Grus is a calm, patient man who follows standard Marine procedures and refrains from unnecessary danger, even when others try to coerce him into doing anything. His scepticism at times suggests that he is jealous of peers who receive greater recognition.
Grus is a young man with purple eyes, green shaggy hair, and a lot of muscle. He wears an open red shirt that reveals his body underneath a brown fur coat. The left side of this red shirt has two vertical white lines, and the collar is encircled by a golden chain.
Grus wears a black belt with a golden buckle, red pants, and black shoes with laces. He stands out mainly because he wears a Marine cap with a large bill that is red inside. He wears rings on his right hand's four fingers as well. He wore his fur cloak over his shoulders when he made his cover story debut. He puts his arms through the sleeves and wears it regularly in his later appearances in the Egghead Arc.
Grus has authority over lower-level subordinates since he is a Marine rear admiral. As a member of Marine squadron SWORD, he is also free to move and behave however he pleases, defying instructions from superiors. He is a comparatively strong man who can easily defeat the Fire Tank Pirates' 90,000,000-headed Gotti. Grus played a key role in SWORD's strategy to save Koby during their attack on Hachinosu, defeating several Blackbeard pirates without suffering any serious wounds. Grus appears to be able to move quickly using Soru. He can also use the Observation Haki and Armament Haki.
Grus gained the ability to make and manipulate clay after consuming the Gunyo Gunyo no Mi, a Devil Fruit of an unidentified class. He mostly uses this ability to make clay golems that he can control remotely to battle in his place. He can also shape his clay into melee weapons that he can use in direct battle or make a big pile of mushy clay to cushion a fall, among other uses for his clay.
