During Buggy's invasion of Orange Town, Richie and Mohji assaulted Chouchou the dog but were later defeated by Monkey D. Luffy. After regaining consciousness, they found themselves entangled with Luffy again, with Richie being used as a shield by Cabaji.
Richie, along with Mohji and Cabaji, fled from the citizens of Orange Town. During a dispute between Cabaji and Mohji, Richie fell asleep, dreaming of being the captain and fighting a dragon. While sleepwalking, he unknowingly beat up Cabaji and Mohji, eventually being declared the new captain. The Buggy Pirates, including Richie, were later captured by the Kumate Tribe, but Buggy and Alvida saved them by defeating the cannibalistic crew.
Richie and Mohji took part in the attack on Loguetown with the task of burning down the Straw Hat's ship. However, they failed when it started to rain. Usopp found them, and Mohji, attempting to act, slipped and knocked himself out on the ship's hull. After the Straw Hat Pirates escaped, Richie and Mohji rejoined their crew.
Richie was seen in the background picking his nose when Ace boarded Buggy's ship. Ace also asked Richie to jump through a hoop of fire.
Richie reappeared when the Buggy and Alvida Alliance tried to rescue Buggy from Impel Down. The crew, initially desperate to save their captain, gave up and followed Alvida after she explained the dangers. During this, Richie comically showed his focus on food and nothing else.
After Buggy reunited with his crew, Richie was seen in the background thinking about onigiri, candy, and cake.
After Buggy became a Warlord of the Sea, the Buggy Pirates were summoned to fight the World Pirates. While near the World Pirates' ship, they witnessed Luffy and Boa Hancock battling Sebastian. Richie joined the crew as they boarded the enemy ship. Onboard, they witnessed Byrnndi World defeating Luffy and attempted to revive him.
Encountering Gairam, who attacked them with Devil Fruit powers, the crew cheered on Buggy, but Richie was more focused on thoughts of ice cream, curry on rice, and a melon. When Gairam attacked again, the crew fled while Mr. 3 defended against the assault. Eventually, Hancock defeated Gairam, and the crew escaped outside the ship.
Witnessing Marine ships approaching and firing on the World Pirates' ship, Buggy and his crew withdrew to their own ship.
On Karai Bari Island at Buggy's Delivery, Richie joined Buggy, Mohji, Cabaji, Alvida, and Galdino in a feast to celebrate the defeat of Donquixote Doflamingo and its positive impact on their business. During the celebration, Mohji announced the New Giant Warrior Pirates' resignation from the dispatch company as they decided to align themselves with the Straw Hat Pirates.
Richie and the other Buggy Pirates attend the Pirates Festival on Delta Island.
After the end of the Seven Warlords of the Sea system, a Marine fleet led by Stainless confronted those on Karai Bari Island. In response, Crocodile led a force to destroy the Marines' ships to recruit Buggy and Buggy's Delivery into his new organization, the Cross Guild.
Despite his large and fierce appearance, Richie mostly behaves like a kitten, often having goofy moments when idle. While intelligent enough to mimic human-like mannerisms, Richie is not very bright and tends to focus mainly on food. His crewmates may misinterpret his exaggerated cravings for food as expressions of emotion after a sad or touching moment.
Richie is a large lion that has a fierce expression during fights but can adopt a goofy face when at ease. His eye color, either white or scarlet red, changes based on his mood.
In the manga, he has golden brown fur with a pink mane, while in the anime, his fur is green, and his mane is purple.
Post-timeskip, Richie has gained weight and wears a one-piece garment with white and orange rhombuses and a white frill collar.
Richie, being a large lion, fights by biting and mauling his victims. He possesses considerable strength, demonstrated by destroying a thick iron cage and knocking Monkey D. Luffy away through a wooden building with a single swipe of his paw.
