Shiryu is the captain of the Second Ship which is a part of the Ten Titanic Captains of the Blackbeard Pirates. He was initially shown as the former Head Jailer of Impel Down. He was later imprisoned and put on Level 6 death row for using excessive and lethal force against other inmates.
He was temporarily freed to help Magellan put an end to the prison revolt that Marshall D. Teach and Monkey D. Luffy had started. However, he refused to follow orders and instead helped the Blackbeard Pirates, and decided to join them.

Shiryu severely abused this privilege by murdering numerous prisoners for his personal enjoyment, even though Impel Down's guards are authorized to kill inmates for security purposes. When Magellan confronted Shiryu, he saw his misuse of his privilege and it became apparent, that he was considered a threat.
He received a death sentence and was put in a Level 6 cell as a result. Even though Shiryu's crimes were extremely brutal, most other prisoners were unaware of them because crimes committed by Level 6 inmates are considered too dangerous or humiliating to be made public.
After failing to capture Monkey D. Luffy, Emporio Ivankov, and Inazuma by flooding the floor with knockout gas they reached Level 6, where Shiryu told the guards that they had escaped along with Jinbe and Crocodile, claiming that Impel Down had declined without him. He instructed the guards to inform Magellan that he would be happy to assist him in battling the escapees.
After getting to know about the Blackbeard Pirates' invasion of Impel Down, Magellan reluctantly agreed to free Shiryu to battle the feared Warlord of the Sea, explaining that Shiryu's punishment had only been delayed and that he would not be given anything else.
But as soon as his sword was returned, he launched an assault on the guards given to free him. To the surprise of the guards fighting against the intruding crew, he was spotted at Level 1, where he spoke with Teach and the rest of the crew.
Shiryu apparently left the Blackbeard Pirates to fend for themselves despite Blackbeard's invitation for him to join his crew. After killing all of the guards in the monitor room and destroying it, Shiryu cut off all communication to the outside of the prison and declared that he did not want Magellan to make it down to where he was.
He also cut all visual reception connections and destroyed the giant Den Den Mushi. While the Blackbeard Pirates and Magellan fought, Shiryu showed up with the antidote, preventing the Blackbeard Pirates from becoming poisoned. He said that if he had not intervened, they would have died. Shiryu was invited back to join Blackbeard's crew.
Shiryu said he was waiting for a man of Blackbeard's kind and that accepting the offer was better than receiving a death sentence. The Blackbeard Pirates got to Level 6 with Shiryu on their side, they forced the prisoners to fight to the death and recruited the survivors into the crew.
When Shiryu travelled to Marineford with Blackbeard, he saw the events on the battlefield, together with the other Blackbeard Pirates. He had come to Marineford to see Whitebeard killed. Sengoku asked Shiryu what happened to Impel Down and Magellan and he replied that since he had joined Blackbeard, he should find out for himself.
Their conversation ended when Whitebeard attacked, but they managed to escape unharmed. Shiryu joined the rest of the Blackbeard Pirates in attacking Whitebeard, severing his arm with his sword, after Whitebeard wounded Blackbeard, even though the latter neutralized the former's Devil Fruit power.
Once Whitebeard was dead, he and the other crew members covered the two pirates in a dark blanket to help Teach absorb Whitebeard's Devil Fruit power.
Although Teach was successful, Shiryu said that Blackbeard might not be as successful. He wondered if the crew would continue or part ways. Blackbeard used his abilities to shake Marineford to its foundation and cause it to sink. Sengoku took the form of a Buddha to stop the Blackbeard Pirates, unleashing a massive shock wave in the process.
Blackbeard was able to stand up with relative ease, suggesting that he had not sustained too much damage. When the Red Hair Pirates arrived in Marineford to bring an end to the war, he and the rest of the crew left.
In the New World, Blackbeard wanted to take out Jewellery Bonney. Shiryu warned the crew of being unprepared for the hardships of the New World while they were arguing with one another. Teach was told through Van Augur that the battleship had arrived, but that Akainu was not on board for a trade. The Blackbeard Pirates left, allowing Bonney to be taken into custody.
The Blackbeard Pirates defeated the remaining Whitebeard Pirates in a battle that took place a year after the battle of Marineford. Shiryu led the fleet's second ship when the Blackbeard Pirates grew. Teach knew where Whitebeard had once been, and the Blackbeard Pirates took advantage of this information to take over the area. The Blackbeard Pirates begin to find and absorb the abilities of strong Devil Fruit users.
Before Teach could convince the former Marine Admiral to join the Blackbeard Pirates, the crew ran into Kuzan after a short fight, they all began to drink, laugh, and enjoy themselves. The crew set Hachinosu as their base of operations after the Rocky Port Incident when Blackbeard overthrew Ochoku.
When the Blackbeard Pirates raided Dressrosa after Doflamingo's defeat, they could not find Burgess. Burgess found Shiryu and Laffitte through Den Den Mushi at sea in the New World. After that, he gave them instructions to alert Teach and organize an island invasion by the Blackbeard Pirates. Afterward, the Revolutionary Army managed to leave after the Blackbeard Pirates attacked Baltigo before the Marines and Cypher Pol could arrive.
Shiryu was seen listening to comments regarding Luffy being too young to be called an Emperor after the events at Totto Land.
Absalom was killed while he was traveling to Blackbeard's island, Hachinosu, and Shiryu got his Suke Suke no Mi. A few days later, Moria and his army of zombies attacked the island, and Shiryu attacked him before showing himself.
Shiryu mentioned that since Avalo Pizarro is merged with the island, he could have caught Koby and the slaves on his own. Pizarro replied that it would have caused too much damage to maybe upset Blackbeard after Koby escaped from prison and attempted to persuade several pirates away from the other prisoners.
Shiryu saw a Marine ship being launched above the island by SWORD members who had come to unleash an attack on Hachinosu.
Garp gave Koby, Helmeppo, and Prince Grus the order to withdraw later in the fight against the Marines. Koby saw a hostage, but Prince Grus later revealed that it was a trap. When Shiryu came back with his Devil Fruit, he went to stab Koby, but Garp moved in front of him and took the blow instead, which seriously wounded Garp. Shiryu and the other Blackbeard Pirates surrounded the seriously wounded Garp as SWORD fled Hachinosu after saving Koby.
Shiryu is a vicious psychopath who seems to take pleasure in murdering people whenever he gets the chance. He used to take full advantage of his status as Head Jailer to murder a great number of inmates inside Impel Down for personal enjoyment. He would justify his actions by claiming that no one would be upset if he disposed of "trash". He also had no qualms about killing his former subordinates; in fact, he began doing so as soon as he was released from prison.
Shiryu seems to enjoy using his blade, even against opponents who are far less skilled than him. He is also seen caring for his sword on a personal level. Shiryu rarely shows anything but a laid-back smile and maintains a composed, collected behavior even in stressful or unexpected circumstances. His cautiousness is shown when he tells the Blackbeard Pirates not to disregard Magellan and when he gives them advice on how to better prepare for the New World.
Shiryu is naturally quite dangerous and traitorous, as seen by his first offer to help Magellan in the prison fight if he were freed, only to quickly betray his former superior and wreak havoc by ruthlessly murdering his former subordinates. Shiryu, initially expressed his intention to quit the Blackbeard Pirates if Blackbeard was unable to gain Whitebeard's power, showing his tendency to distrust and mistrust those who have not yet won his respect.
Shiryu is a fatalist as he believes that fate is responsible for both his meeting with Blackbeard and his decision to join the crew. Shiryu doesn't seem to give a damn about personal information, especially when it comes to relationships he cut off. Nevertheless, Shiryu appears to have a strict attitude towards his friends, whether they are jailers or pirates.
It seems that Shiryu enjoys smoking because the first thing he asks for after being released from his cell is a lighter for his cigar. On top of that, he is revealed to have a perverted side, as he would use his new Devil Fruit powers to spy on women's baths.
Shiryu is a tanned man with a height of 3.4 meters. He has a long face with a wide-bridged nose, a flat-ended chin, and a full-lipped mouth that is always seen smoking a large cigar. Shiryu did not wear prisoner attire while imprisoned; instead, he was allowed to keep his Head Jailer uniform.
He wore a traditional officer's peaked cap, with a black, low-set visor and a dark blue crown with a red cap band with the winged, crowned Impel Down insignia on it displayed in front.
Under that, he wore an aviator-style white cap, with earflaps that hid a feature similar to built-in hearing aids with a knee-length, dark blue, double-breasted trench coat with ten gold buttons, a buttoned collar, and a red patch. There was a red brassard with the same Impel Down insignia on each upper arm, and the light-brown belt that came with the coat also served as a buckle.
Shiryu also wore matching brown boots and gloves that were knee length and below the elbow, respectively, and dark green trousers that were tucked into the boots. Another part of his uniform was a white overcoat with the kanji character for "prison" printed on the back that he wore over his shoulders like a cape. It featured single gold buttons next to red, rectangles with gold borders denoted by golden Xs, creating fringeless epaulets. The coat had simple sleeves without cuffs.
Shiryu was a former Head Jailer of Impel Down, one of the top positions in the prison. Prior to losing his position and benefits due to his misuse of authority, he was respected on par with the Chief Warden himself. Shiryu was considered more dangerous even though he was said to be as strong as the Warden during his time in Impel Down.
Ivankov said that Impel Down was invincible due to Shiryu and Magellan's combined protection and that Luffy and Bentham would not have been able to breach the prison as deeply as they did if Shiryu had remained on duty instead of being imprisoned.
Shiryu had been placed in Level 6, meant for the most powerful and dangerous criminals, by the Chief Warden, who considered him to be such a threat. Shiryu's amazing agility is demonstrated by the swiftness with which he sends several Impel Down prisoners away. In terms of stamina, he survived being thrown back a considerable distance by Whitebeard's earthquake shockwave and then taking direct damage from Sengoku's shockwave in his Daibutsu form.
Even before he gained the Devil Fruit abilities, Shiryu demonstrated excellent stealth skills. Shiryu could sneak past the incredibly high security to destroy all communication devices present, sneak up on a security guard reporting to Magellan, and kill him without being noticed. Shiryu became more adept at stealth after acquiring his invisibility abilities, which allowed him to launch surprise attacks on strong opponents like Gecko Moria and Monkey D. Garp.
Shiryu is a very skilled swordsman who has killed numerous Impel Down prisoners. Shiryu displayed exceptional accuracy and skill in his swordsmanship as he quickly killed several of his former subordinates after receiving his sword back after a protracted imprisonment.
Shiryu knows how to use Busoshoku Haki and he can even imbue it into his sword.
Shiryu ate the Suke Suke no Mi which is a Paramecia-type devil fruit that gives him the ability to turn himself invisible. Taking advantage of this ability, he can ambush his enemies by attacking them with a surprise attack.
Shiryu's preferred weapon is a nodachi called Raiu. After being imprisoned in Level 6, it was taken from him and given back to him so he could deal with Blackbeard.
Shiryu got to know Marshall D. Teach when he and his group invaded Impel Down. When he realized there was no future for him in prison and that he had been waiting for someone like Teach for a while, he joined the Blackbeard Pirates rather than fighting Teach as he was ordered to.
Although Shiryu had previously worked for Magellan, the latter was forced to imprison him because of his vicious and violent demeanor towards the Impel Down captives.
