Shyarly’s History

In her younger years, Shyarly was abandoned by her father and lived with Arlong in the Fish-Man District. At the age of three, she predicted the birth of the Mermaid Princess, and at four, she foresaw the coming of the Great Age of Pirates, which did happen a year later.

She also listened to Hatchan's story about Silvers Rayleigh. Before the Whitebeard War, Shyarly predicted Whitebeard's death, and it came true.

Fish-Man Island Arc

Shyarly allowed the Straw Hat Pirates to use the back room of her Mermaid Cafe to treat Sanji's blood loss. When Monkey D. Luffy and Usopp found her crystal ball, she warned them not to touch it, revealing that she had quit fortune telling.

She suggested that Camie take the day off and show her friends around the island. After the pirates left, Shyarly felt the urge to check her crystal ball and foresaw a person in a straw hat destroying Fish-Man Island. She went into the streets and shouted for everyone to find Luffy and force him off the island.

Later, she told Prince Fukaboshi about her prediction. After the New Fish-Man Pirates defeated the three princes, Shyarly boldly confronted Hody Jones, telling him that Luffy, not him, would be the one to destroy Fish-Man Island. Hody struck her with a water shot, but she was assisted by a nearby mermaid.

Later, while being helped by a doctor, Shyarly was approached by some children who asked when Luffy was supposed to destroy the island. She explained that she couldn't predict exact dates and that it could happen anytime between a day or a year from then.

Later, the Straw Hat Pirates arrived, saved Neptune and the princes, and began fighting the New Fish-Man Pirates. Shyarly convinced a group of children to form their own opinions about humans based on what they see, not just what they hear.

After the battle, as Luffy tried to destroy Noah, Shyarly and the citizens looked up into the sky. When the Sea Kings saved Noah and the island, everyone celebrated. Shyarly asked her employees to bid farewell to the Straw Hats as they left the island.

She later revealed to Camie that she didn't want to predict the future again and expressed happiness if her prediction about Luffy was wrong. Shyarly then asked for forgiveness from Camie for suspecting her friends and affirmed her trust in them.

Shyarly’s Personality

Madam Shyarly is a kind woman who allowed the Straw Hat Pirates to use a room in her Mermaid Cafe to care for Sanji, despite them defeating her brother, Arlong. She gave Camie the day off to spend time with her friends. Shyarly dislikes rudeness and vulgarity, as seen when she gets angry at Luffy's question about mermaids. However, her anger is short-lived, and she quickly returns to her normal self after Luffy apologizes.

While Shyarly is a fortune teller, she considers her gift a burden because most of her visions involve negative events. She believes the future is better left unknown but still looks into Luffy's future out of curiosity. When she foresaw a man in a straw hat destroying Fish-Man Island, she panicked and wanted Luffy banished.

However, during the New Fish-Man Pirates' takeover, she calmly told their captain, Hody Jones, that Luffy, not Hody, would be the one to destroy Fish-Man Island. After the civil war, she destroyed her crystal ball, vowing never to look into the future again and expressing happiness if her last prediction didn't come true.

Unlike her brother Arlong, Shyarly is not prejudiced against all humans and encourages Fish-Man Island children to form their own opinions by seeing things for themselves rather than just listening to others

Shyarly’s Appearance

Madam Shyarly is a large mermaid with blue eyes, and shark-like slanted pupils, and when angered, her eyes take on a more ominous look, revealing sharp teeth. Her short black hair covers the right side of her face. Shyarly wears purple nail polish and red lipstick, adding to her overall appearance.

Her mermaid tail is dark blue, featuring a dorsal fin on her lower back where her human and fish halves meet. There's a white patch below the dorsal fin, smaller fins on the lower front and back, and a lunate caudal fin. Notably, the dorsal side of her fish attribute is at the front of her tail, unlike the typical placement.

Madam Shyarly's attire includes a hooded purple blouse, which is only buttoned in the middle, exposing her cleavage and stomach. She accessorizes with a belly chain around her waist. She is often seen smoking a pipe.

In her childhood, she wore a light-colored hooded dress with a stripe down the side, and the anime revealed that her dress at that time had the same color as her current outfit.

Shyarly’s Abilities

As the owner of the Mermaid Cafe, Madam Shyarly has full control of the restaurant.

As a mermaid, she possesses unique abilities, potentially including the ability to communicate with and call fish using sonar waves, a standard skill among mermaids. She can breathe underwater and swim at high speeds, faster than the Flying Fish Riders. However, like all mermaids, she is vulnerable when on land.

In her role as a fortune teller, Shyarly can foresee the future using a crystal ball. While her predictions are highly accurate, she cannot pinpoint the exact timing of the events she foresees. Her predictions have included foreseeing the Great Age of Pirates, the outcome of the Summit War of Marineford, and Whitebeard's death.

She recently predicted that a man in a straw hat, likely Luffy, would destroy Fish-Man Island. Despite Luffy leaving the island without causing destruction, there's still a possibility that the prediction might come true within a year, given the timeframe of Shyarly's visions. Shyarly decided to give up her fortune-telling abilities by breaking her crystal ball.

Did You Know?

  • Shyarly's name is likely a pun on her being a shark mermaid, as "Shyarly" begins with the same syllable as "shark." The official English spelling "Sharley" emphasizes this connection.

  • The Fish-Man Island Arc draws inspiration from "The Little Mermaid," with Shyarly serving as a parallel to the sea witch in the storyline. Similar to the witch's magical influence, Shyarly's predictions play a crucial role in shaping events in the arc. In some cultures, fortune telling, like Shyarly's abilities, is associated with witchcraft and black magic.

  • Shyarly's prophetic skill finds roots in Japanese folklore, mirroring the Amabie, a mermaid capable of foreseeing both good and bad fortune. Interestingly, the Amabie believed it could only predict negative events.

  • The term "madam" in English, a polite address for a woman, can also refer to the female owner of a brothel. While Mermaid Cafe isn't explicitly declared a brothel, its setup and the charm of its young and attractive female staff mimic certain aspects of a hostess club. In English, "Madam(e)" is a common title for a stereotypical fortune teller.

  • Shyarly's birthday on September 9, known as "Fortune-telling Day" in Japan, aligns with her role as a fortune teller. This day is shared with Basil Hawkins, another fortuneteller in the One Piece world.

  • Despite Shyarly's claim that she couldn't predict the timing of an event, Chapter 967 reveals her accurate prediction of the Mermaid Princess's birth.

  • Shyarly's culinary preference includes black tea with rose jam, providing a glimpse into her favorite food.
