Silvers Rayleigh in One Piece

Silvers Rayleigh, better known as “Dark King Rayleigh,” is a former retired pirate, and the first mate to the Pirate King Gol D. Roger. He was renowned as Roger’s “Right Hand Man.” He is among the top powerful figures besides Whitebeard, Shiki, Monkey D. Garp, Sengoku, Tsuru and Kong, at a time when Roger was alive.

After the Roger Pirates were disbanded and Gol D. Roger was put to death, Rayleigh started working as a coating mechanic at the Sabaody Archipelago. Later on, he also became Shakuyaku's husband and made friends with Hatchan.

Rayleigh became an ally to the Straw Hat Pirates during the Sabaody Archipelago arc. After Straw Hats’ separation and post Summit War, Rayleigh trained Luffy for about 1.5 years during the two year time-skip, teaching him to control and gain mastery over his Haki techniques. After the Seven Warlords of the Sea were abolished, Rayleigh and Shakky returned to Amazon Lily to defend Hancock and the island.

Rayleigh’s Personality

Like his captain Roger, Rayleigh is a fun-loving, laid-back person. He had a history of being irritated with the pranks of the younger crew members and taking his role as the group's disciplinarian very seriously. But as he got older, his personality changed, and he became much more relaxed. Rayleigh is not frequently impulsive; instead, he thinks things through and prepares before acting, yet he won't hesitate to do so in a crisis. When faced with dire or unexpected circumstances, Rayleigh maintains his composure and moves forward unafraid.

He tends to be outgoing and talkative and appears to like reminiscing about the good old days of their nearly bygone era and the past and its glorious times. Despite this, he seemed hesitant to surface the more alarming subject of the Void Century.

Rayleigh likes to go with the flow and show up in surprising places and ways, especially given his status and age, even if he frequently has a serious atmosphere about him. He often grumbles about how his body "does not work as it used to" due to advancing age. He is conscious of his own limits and his advanced age.

When he initially appeared, he demonstrated his love of ladies and booze, as described by Shakky, defending Camie from Disco's mistreatment while carrying a hip flask. He prefers to go by the name "Ray-san". Rayleigh, who was previously rivals with the Whitebeard Pirates, shows admiration for their leader, much like Roger, and shed a tear when Whitebeard died.

Rayleigh’s Appearance

Rayleigh is a grizzled old man with a tall stature, a mighty physique, and tan skin. His spherical glasses and facial hair, spread embattled across his lower jaw, are two of his most distinctive features. In addition, he has a scar over his right eye that has been there for a long time.

Rayleigh's usual outfit.

Rayleigh favors wearing basic clothing, usually a plain t-shirt, shorts, and sandals. He also appears to enjoy the cover of an oversized silver hooded coat in public, albeit the hood is frequently down. The old man's body is strongly built and extremely well-toned underneath these garments, a testament to his remarkable strength. He is now sporting a black T-shirt and his silver hooded cloak following the two-year time skip.

Rayleigh's manga color scheme.

When Rayleigh was younger, he had well-groomed strawberry blond hair that was once black in the anime. He also had a light beard on his face. He lengthened his hair as it became whiter over time. He first had striped facial hair, which turned into a beard. Rayleigh became much taller during Roger's final years of life, almost matching the height of his former captain. Rayleigh is a powerful man with a broad chest and a well-built body, regardless of age.

Rayleigh’s Abilities

Rayleigh is a fiercely capable and skilled fighter. During his earlier years with Gol D. Roger, Rayleigh served as first mate and oversaw the rest of the crew, including the apprentices. He also had other responsibilities. At his current age, Rayleigh can battle an opponent as strong as an Admiral on equal footing. Even Marines are ordered to retreat when Rayleigh happens to be in sight.

Rayleigh vs Kizaru.

Rayleigh is also an expert in the coating business because he handles similar tasks for many pirate ships en route to Fish-Man Island and knows how deep-sea currents operate.

Physical Abilities

Rayleigh, despite his advanced age, is physically very strong. He could swim to Amazon Lily outside the Calm Belt and kill multiple Sea Kings with his own hands. He could shoot cannonballs shot with incredible force and accuracy in the anime. Rayleigh is also incredibly quick and has exceptional reflexes.

Intelligence

Rayleigh is incredibly crafty and cunning; he has managed to dodge the awareness of the vast World Government for more than 20 years. He quickly learned to exploit the slave-trading industry on the Sabaody Archipelago for personal gain (getting himself caught and sold to a wealthy bidder before escaping and robbing his "master"). As first mate and Gol D. Roger's right-hand man, he broke up arguments and disputes aboard the Oro Jackson because he was always cool and collected.

Roger Pirates.

From his time with Roger, Rayleigh is aware of the "true history" of the world. He has added that, as a pirate crew lacking the expertise in archaeology possessed by researchers of the calibre of Ohara, they might have deciphered the data otherwise. This is debatable, though, given that the Roger Pirates had Kozuki Oden, who was fluent in the language found on the Poneglyphs and knew how to read and write it.

Rayleigh's extraordinary capacity for perception and deduction is another distinguishing quality. This was shown when he quickly understood what had happened after finding himself on the Sabaody Archipelago slave deal stage.

Swordsmanship

Rayleigh has a proficient command of handling a sword. By combining Busoshoku Haki with his swordsmanship, he could compete on an equal footing with Admiral Kizaru, who is also a highly talented swordsman when using his Ama no Murakumo, and cut and drew blood from the admiral's face. He can also create strongly compressed air cuts, as evidenced by the time he leveled the ground to stop Marines from pursuing Luffy.

Haki

Rayleigh employing his Haki to train Luffy.

Rayleigh is one of the very few people in the world who can use all three varieties of Haki. He is also a skilled instructor, having instructed Luffy in the fundamentals and taught him about each type of Haki.

Haoshoku Haki

Rayleigh is incredibly skilled at utilizing Haoshoku Haki. His skill level is sufficient to knock out an individual target or large crowds. His ability to "infuse" his body or other items with Haoshoku Haki to boost his attack power makes him one of the few users of this form of Haki who can use it more sophisticatedly. This is shown by the thin streams of black lightning originating from his body.

Busoshoku Haki

Rayleigh is a master at using Busoshoku Haki. He can harden specific areas of his body or things by imbuing them with his Haki. He can also use a superior variation of this technique in which he can channel his Haki into his opponent or object, allowing him to destroy them from the inside out. When Rayleigh uses advanced Busoshoku Haki, it is depicted in the anime as a red-colored flowing aura.

Kenbunshoku Haki

Kenbunshoku Haki is a very skillful tool in Rayleigh's arsenal. He knows how this kind of Haki is used in more complicated applications and how skilled users can anticipate the future.

Rayleigh’s Relationships

Roger Pirates

Gol D. Roger: The Pirate King referred to Rayleigh as his "partner" because of their close bond. Rayleigh could not bear to watch his best friend be put to death after the man surrendered to the Marines.

Buggy and Shanks: They frequently argued with each other while serving as apprentice pirates on the ship, which led to Rayleigh punishing them. Despite this, Buggy still holds the former first mate of the crew in high regard. After Shanks and Rayleigh's reunion at the Sabaody Archipelago, Rayleigh expressed interest in meeting Luffy after Shanks informed him about a youngster he met in East Blue.

Crocus: Despite the doctor's limited stay with them, Rayleigh expressed appreciation for him as a crewmate and his wish to work with him again.

Kozuki Oden: He respected Oden greatly, just like the rest of the crew. Oden rejected Rayleigh's offer to assist him in opening Wano Country to the outside world.

Shakuyaku

Rayleigh's wife and business partner is Shakuyaku. She has Rayleigh's complete trust, and he knows her strengths. Rayleigh used her calculations to track down Luffy after the war.

Friends

Rayleigh and Luffy taking a break after Luffy's Haki training.

Monkey D. Luffy: Rayleigh had been eager to meet Luffy since he first learned about him from Shanks. In light of Luffy's statement that the Pirate King enjoys the greatest freedom on the sea, he shares Shakky's high expectations for him. Luffy received instruction from Rayleigh on how to master each of the three Haki variants. It is clear from the two-year time gap that they grew close during their training. Rayleigh was left with a smile and tears in his eyes as Luffy shouted to him as he made his way towards Thousand Sunny that he would soon become the Pirate King.

Boa Hancock: Rayleigh is the only male individual besides Luffy allowed to enter Amazon Lily. He and Shakuyaku went to Amazon Lily to aid the Kuja after the Seven Warlords of the Sea were abolished. He ran into Blackbeard, who attacked the island and made a deal with him and the Marines for Hancock to reverse her devil fruit effect and then everyone left, saving both Hancock and Amazon Lily.

Straw Hat Pirates: Rayleigh helped the Straw Hat Pirates numerous times after first encountering them at the Human Auctioning House event. He provided free coating for the Thousand Sunny and protected the crew from Kizaru. When the Marines hunted the crew two years after the Summit War of Marineford, Rayleigh assisted the Straw Hats in escaping.

Hatchan: Silvers Rayleigh and Hatchan are buddies because the former saved the latter from a shipwreck when they were kids. Since then, the two have maintained strong relations; nonetheless, Rayleigh disagreed with Hatchan joining Fisher Tiger's Sun Pirates.

Jinbe: Additionally, it appears that Jinbe, the former Warlord of the Sea, and Rayleigh have grown close. He participated in the ringing of the Ox Bell, the circling of Marineford, and the theft of a Marine ship.

Gloriosa: Rayleigh and Shakky are good friends with Gloriosa, and Rayleigh is one of the few, if not the only, to call her by her given name. Gloriosa stayed on Sabaody Archipelago with Rayleigh and Shakky while sheltering the Gorgon Sisters following their run-in with the World Nobles before returning to Amazon Lily.

Enemies

World Government: Rayleigh is among few of those to know the world's true history. Such individuals are viewed as a serious threat by the government.

Marines: Rayleigh and the other Roger Pirates have already run into several Marines, namely Monkey D. Garp. He was a powerful enemy of the Marines due to his affiliation with one of the most formidable pirate crews.

Edward Newgate: Rayleigh had a rivalry with the Whitebeard Pirates as a member of the Roger Pirates. Nevertheless, Rayleigh holds Edward Newgate in high regard, much like he does his captain.

Blackbeard: Rayleigh had some respect for Whitebeard's crew even though they were rivals, and Teach was the only person on that crew whom Rayleigh hated. This hate would intensify due to Blackbeard's killing of his former captain, theft of Whitebeard's abilities, and claiming of his domains. He continues to make Rayleigh despise him with his abusive acts. Rayleigh refers to Blackbeard as "Whitebeard's Cabin Boy."

Chinjao: When Luffy revealed that Rayleigh taught him how to handle Haki, Chinjao expressed his dismay at learning that the Pirate King's right hand is still alive, suggesting that Chinjao may hold resentment towards Rayleigh.
