South Bird in One Piece

South Bird is one of the species of bird found only in the forests of Jaya and Skypiea. Its head is always angled south for reasons that are unknown, regardless of where it is or where it is going. History

Past

In the ancient Shandia era, the South Birds were an iconic sight on Jaya, and the ancient Shandia were known to carve golden idols showing them. In fact, it was their distinctive calls that gave Mont Blanc Noland his first impressions of the island.

Once the Knock-Up Stream pushed half of Jaya into Skypiea, quite a few of the South Birds adapted to their new surroundings in what would eventually become Upper Yard. Because of the special combination of nutrients, they grew to be many times bigger than their ancestors over centuries.

Jaya Arc

Upon deciding to take the Knock-Up Stream to Skypiea, Mont Blanc Cricket told the Straw Hat Pirates to locate a South Bird for direction. Since the South Birds had gathered an army of insects to chase the Straw Hats away, the search proved to be an extended and frustrating hardship. Eventually, one of them became too arrogant and Nico Robin had to use her Hana Hana abilities to locate and capture it.

Luffy was amused to see that this South Bird was chained to the Going Merry's foredeck, but it refused to surrender. It even made an unsuccessful attempt to trick its captors by turning its head.

Skypiea Arc

The Straw Hats released their South Bird soon after they arrived in Skypiea, and it angrily pecked Nami before taking off. The Straw Hats made it to the Knock-Up Stream and, eventually, Skypiea with its hesitant help. In the forests of Upper Yard later, the crew came across a large number of South Birds that were born in Skypiea. The flock rescued Gan Fall, Pierre, and Chopper from the shark-infested waters surrounding the Sacrificial Altar.

Skypiea Arc

Another one started following Zoro the following day when he was eating lunch, but Zoro constantly resisted it and even threw his backpack at it. Unfazed, it took off with the backpack, forcing Zoro to hold on.

Once in the air, a hungry Nola saw them and attacked, scaring the bird into letting Zoro fly free. Unexpectedly, after the Straw Hats had completed their adventures in Skypiea, their South Bird ran back to the departing Merry.

G-8 Arc

All of the Straw Hats were forced to evacuate, leaving the South Bird alone on board when the Merry accidentally landed in the middle of Navarone Island and its known G-8 Marine Base during its descent from Skypiea.

Vice Admiral Jonathan saw it and called it "a silly bird" during the Marines' first investigation; the South Bird became enraged and gave him a fierce peck before taking off to remain behind.

Where they are now?

Many South Birds observed Wyper and his fellow Shandia warriors clearing trees on Upper Yard for a new village.

One Piece: Stampede

There was a South Bird on Delta Island at the Pirates.

Personality

South Birds require a great deal of effort to turn their heads in any other direction. Their extremely flexible neck muscles allow them to turn and move their bodies almost independently of their heads in order to make up for this. They have a deep, very distinct call that gives them control over a vast array of insects, including praying mantises, hornets, and moths, through unidentified ways.

The South Birds of Jaya are known to be hostile towards humans because they have a long history of being hunted and used as navigational aids. The inhabitants of Skypiea, on the other hand, are kind enough to tolerate, friend, and even save humans without benefiting from it.

Appearance

The feathers of South Birds are incredibly colorful, primarily switching between green and purple patterns. Their bills are significantly long and narrow, like toucans. They have one backward-facing toe and three forward-facing toes, just like the majority of birds.

The average South Bird is about the size of a toddler. However, the average South Bird is several times larger as a result of many generations of eating the special nutrients found in the land.
