Void Century in One Piece

The Great Kingdom.

The era from 900 to 800 years before the present period that has no documented archeological history is called the "Void Century," or "Void in History" in the Japanese manga/anime series One Piece.

For whatever reason, the World Government considers studying this period one of the worst crimes to be committed. Learning about the events of this era is considered to help one understand the "true history" of the Blue Planet because they are so significant and relevant. Finding the truth about the Void Century has been Nico Robin's dream since she was a young girl. After his death, Dr. Vegapunk, a scientist, transmitted his knowledge of the Void Century to the world in advance.

Disclaimer: This article contains major spoilers about the series.

Void Century in One Piece

The period between 900 and 800 years before the present that has no recorded archaeological history is referred to as the "Void Century" or "Void in History."

Since nothing remains to prove anything that occurred during this time, it came to be known as the Void Century. Only a select few persons in the present day can read the ancient language used to write the Poneglyphs, including Vegapunk, Kouzuki Sukiyaki, Nico Robin, and the archaeologists of Ohara.

However, because of that missing period, nothing connects with the world's known histories, which is troublesome. Almost no one is aware that there is a gap in the historical record, even though many people appear to be aware that it exists. For instance, Nefertari Cobra was utterly taken aback that there was a method to "tie the threads of history together" after Robin informed him about this missing era. When "Dark King" Silvers Rayleigh disclosed that the Roger Pirates had uncovered the real history, it was evident that the gap could be filled.

The Five Elders and the majority of other World Nobles are determined to keep the Void Century a secret. However, it appears that several World Nobles are unaware of the existence of the Void Century. Evidently, the real history of the planet has secrets so dangerous that anyone who knows about them, even outlaws, are very reluctant to discuss them.

Laugh Tale's hidden history was kept secret from the public by Edward Newgate and the Roger Pirates, and Kouzuki Oden did the same since he felt it would be a burden to his followers. Silvers Rayleigh promised to tell Nico Robin the real story, but cautioned that being the way she was at the time, there was nothing she could do about it.

In the perspective of the World Government, possessing knowledge of the actual events of the Void Century is also punishable by death, regardless of one's affiliation. If one person tries to learn anything about the Void Century, entire nations will be destroyed and wiped out of history. For the sole reason that they might know of the Void Century, the World Government is not even afraid to kill innocent people, even if they had nothing to do with the people learning about it.

The World Government would kill their valuable allies and ruin their property without hesitation to eradicate anybody who has any connection to the Void Century, whether they are aware of it or not. In fact, knowledge about the Void Century was at least partially responsible for the inception of all three of the canon Buster Calls.

Great War during the void century

The Great War was one of the most important events of the Void Century. The Great Kingdom was destroyed, the World Government was established, and the world's current geographic situation was brought about by the Great War. Since the origins and causes of this war are yet unknown, Vegapunk simply described it as two opposing ideologies.

A group of twenty nations' royals, referred to as the First Twenty, united against the Great Kingdom. Joy Boy, the first pirate, stood against them on the side of the Great Kingdom and was so strong that the coalition was unable to destroy him. As a result, they used the Ancient Weapons, which helped them win and bring down Joy Boy and the Great Kingdom. However, according to Vegapunk, the use of the Ancient Weapons caused sea levels to rise by 200 meters worldwide. According to Vegapunk, this conflict has not entirely ended because the Ancient Weapons are still in use. It has also been suggested that the fall of Shandora was caused by this war.

The Legacy of the Great War

Geography

The map of the world.

The continents that existed a millennium ago sank into the depths when the worldwide sea level rose by 200 meters during the Void Century. The islands that are currently recognized as existing are simply peaks of those continents.

After considering climatological, geological, environmental, and atmospheric elements, Vegapunk concluded that a natural disaster could not have caused the drastic rise in sea level, as one may initially believe. The whole world would not have undergone such a significant transformation in just one hundred years. Vegapunk then concluded that this man-made catastrophe was caused by the Ancient Weapons. Also, the Great War that took place during the Void Century never truly ended because the weapons are still in use today and are just waiting to reappear.

A new understanding of why the World Nobles decided to establish their residence at the summit of the enormous Red Line and why they commissioned the construction of the megastructures Tequila Wolf, Rum Wolf, and Bourbon Wolf—all of which slaves have been building for 700 years—is provided by the discovery of the rising sea levels and the potential for further rise.

Formation of the World Government

The World Government's flag.

Following the alliance's victory over Joy Boy at the end of the Void Century 800 years ago, the World Government was established, assuming political control of the entire world, bringing all nations together and creating the Council of Kings, which gathers every four years. It is still unclear how exactly it was established and how they concealed the 100-year gap.

All of the founding monarchs who joined the alliance and formed the World Government, with the exception of Queen Lili of Arabasta, moved to Mary Geoise, the capital of the World Government. Mary Geoise is situated at the halfway point of the Grand Line, which is the "center of the world" in a sense, and at the top of the Red Line. This led to the election of new royal families in their own countries. "Celestial Dragons" or World Nobles are the descendants of those 19 royals. The highest ranked of all the Celestial Dragons, the Five Elders, form the council that formally governs the World Government.

On top of that, the founding members swore equality amongst their kingdoms before the Empty Throne, a chair in Pangaea Castle, the government's headquarters. The absence of an occupant on the throne in the middle of the world is supposed to represent the fact that there is no one monarch in the universe. Each founder symbolically protected the throne by leaving their weapon embedded in the ground around it. Even the Five Elders who govern the World Government are just that: five of them.

But the claim that the throne is empty is false. It is currently occupied by a mysterious person named Imu. This individual is revered even by the Five Elders. The Revolutionary Army believes this individual may be Nerona Imu, a founding royal from the Void Century who was given immortality through the use of a particular Devil Fruit.

Ponegylphs

A Poneglyph.

Poneglyphs are enormous, mysterious pieces of stone that are found across the Grand Line. They have inscriptions that tell about the events of the Void Century and how to locate Laugh Tale, the final island in the Grand Line. They are written in a language that is exceedingly old and difficult for most people to translate. Professor Clou D. Clover has spoken of them as indestructible.

Nobody is allowed to study or do research on these blocks by the government. Hundreds of academics were slaughtered worldwide when the study of the Poneglyphs was banned. Since then, all studies related to the Void Century have been strictly prohibited.

Ancient Weapons

The Ancient Weapons are three weapons of mass devastation that are powerful enough to bring ruin to the entire earth. The World Government uses the Ancient Weapons as justification to prohibit the study of the years that have gone missing.

Pluton, an ancient battleship with the capacity to wreak havoc, is their first weapon. After the Great War, the ship itself was concealed in Wano Country, and the blueprints, which had been handed down from master to apprentice over the generations, were left with the Shipwrights of Water 7. Only a handful of mountaintop plateaus remain after the country's sea level regions got flooded with rainwater due to the tremendous wall that encircles Wano and was constructed around the island's border for unclear reasons. Before Joy Boy's return, Kouzuki Oden thought Wano's frontiers should be opened. In reality, "opening the border" meant tearing down the wall and freeing Pluton, not ending Wano's isolationist policy.

Shirahoshi, the current Poseidon.

Poseidon is the second weapon. Fish-men and Merfolk can communicate with marine life, but they have never been able to speak with Sea Kings. Every few centuries, a mermaid princess with the ability to communicate with and control the Sea Kings—known as Poseidon—is born into the Ryugu Kingdom's royal family. Even the Sea Kings themselves seem to be baffled as to why their queen always takes the shape of a mermaid princess, even though she is their esteemed ruler. Shirahoshi, the current mermaid princess, is the one who currently possesses this power.

Uranus, the third weapon, has an unknown nature and set of powers. Its location is also unknown.

One Piece

Laughtale.

Joy Boy left a mysterious piece on the Grand Line's final island. Only Gol D. Roger and his crew made it all the way there since the Void Century, 800 years later, 25 years before the current plot. They called it a "funny story" after starting to laugh when they saw what was on the island, which is how the island received the name Laugh Tale. It is unknown what they saw, but it was stated they "arrived a little too early".

Roger turned himself in to the Marines after being diagnosed with a deadly sickness. While on the Execution Platform, he told the world about the One Piece, calling it his enormous treasure that anyone who might find it may have it for free. His final words sparked a period known as the Great Pirate Era, inspiring numerous people to embark on a journey as pirates for years to come.

Dr. Vegapunk believed that whoever finds the One Piece will determine the fate of the entire world. According to him, individuals who are unable to submit to any form of repression are the ones who are closest to the truth. However, the person who finds it might not be who Joy Boy hoped for.

Iron Giant

Emeth (Iron Giant).

A massive armored robot was created for unknown purposes around the start of the Void Century. It went up the Red Line and invaded Mary Geoise for unknown reasons and under unidentified circumstances 700 years later, 200 years before the present. However, it lost power before it could cause any harm. Instead of destroying it as the government had instructed, Jaygarcia Saturn covertly ordered experts to keep and study it with the hope of using the information they gathered for military purposes in the future.

Vegapunk claimed that the robot is powered by a power source that was widespread in the Void Century but is impossible to duplicate now. What this is, we do not yet know. It came to life when the "Drums of Liberation" started to beat, but he was never able to make it function since he could never duplicate the mysterious Ancient Energy that drives it.

Will of D

There are many people with the middle initial "D." in their names all across the world. The meaning of the "D." is unclear, but the Five Elders appear to be as determined to censor it as they are to censor anything else associated with the Void Century. For instance, the government claimed that Gol D. Roger, the King of Pirates, was actually Gold Roger.

The nature of the relationship between that beginning and the Great Kingdom is unknown. The "D." has been covertly passed down throughout history and the world, according to Donquixote Rosinante, and in a "certain land," the D. family was known as the Natural Enemy of God.

This would suggest that since Celestial Dragons (who are descended from the "creators of the world") are regarded as "Gods," the "D."s are their natural enemies. Children in Mary Geoise were reportedly warned that "D." would devour them if they misbehaved. Elders in that nation also appeared to be very cautious of the "storm" that people with "D." were known to unleash.

For example, Monkey D. Luffy, Marshall D. Teach, and Portgas D. Ace at the Summit War of Marineford, or Rocks D. Xebec, Monkey D. Garp, and Gol D. Roger at the God Valley Incident always seem to be at the center of significant events that change the world.

Key locations and figures in the Void century

Elbaph Mural

The mural at Elbaph.

Sometime during the Void Century, an enormous mural was carved on the fossilized bark of the Treasure Tree Adam on Elbaph. Although not much is known about it, the most popular belief, according to Ripley, is that it was carved by kids who were daydreaming at the time.

This is partially because, even though there were occasionally racial conflicts, the giants are unaware of any instances of cross-cultural interaction. Nevertheless, because of its historical significance, it is regarded as a cultural relic. Interestingly, the mural seems to represent Harley's text graphically, which documents the ancient history of two worlds that have already existed and one that has not yet.

Shandora

The golden city of Shandora.

Another group of identical Automata can be found in an ancient city on the moon in Enel's cover story. A Shandorian and Birkan are working on the right, while a Skypiean with Automata following him is depicted on the left in a picture on the wall. The three races left for the "Blue Star" when the moon's resources were exhausted.

One thousand years ago, the Shandorians, one of the three races, settled on the island of Jaya and established the city of Shandora. The mighty city of Shandora fell during this conflict, and the Shandorians fought to keep "those who seek the stone" out of the city. The Shandia, the descendants of the Shandorians, continued to protect the city for more than eight hundred years after it fell.

Great Kingdom

The Great Kingdom.

A strong nation, the Great Kingdom was overthrown by the Twenty Kingdoms, who would go on to become the World Government. Because of the kingdom's immense strength, studying the Poneglyphs is prohibited because it constitutes a serious threat to the world, according to the World Government. A few moon craters can be seen in the Great Kingdom's image, suggesting that the moon and the kingdom may be related. The name of the Great Kingdom has not yet been disclosed. But according to Clou D. Clover, its name was crucial and contained the secret to comprehending the Void Century.

Vegapunk claims that 900 years ago, the Great Kingdom was a highly developed technological civilization. Despite being 500 hundred years ahead of the rest of the world in terms of scientific advancements, Vegapunk nevertheless views himself as being far behind the Great Kingdom. Even with his brilliance, Vegapunk could only partially replicate that technology.

Joy Boy

Joy Boy's silhouette in the manga.

Joy Boy became the first pirate in history when he sailed from his home in the Great Kingdom during the Void Century. He was able to take on the form of the playful sun deity Nika by using the power of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit. It provided him with a rubber-like body, allowing him to fight any way he pleased. The Void Century and the Great Kingdom came to an end with Joy Boy's defeat.

On the final island of the Grand Line, Joy Boy also left behind an object of unimaginable value. Whitebeard claims that when it is discovered once more, the entire planet will be shaken to its core. Kouzuki Oden decided that Wano Country should be made accessible to the outside world before Joy Boy's return after learning about the events of the Void Century.

Noah

Noah in the Fish-Man island.

When Joy Boy arrived at Fish-Man Island, he made a specific deal with the then-mermaid princess. This princess possessed the power known as Poseidon, which only occurs in a Mermaid princess once every few millennia and gives Merfolk the capacity to call forth and manipulate the Sea Kings.

A gigantic ship named Noah was involved in the deal, however, the entirety of the deal is unknown. Though it's unclear where or why they were supposed to take it, the ship was built so the Sea Kings could pull it. Joy Boy broke his end of the bargain for reasons that are unclear. Fish-Man Island inhabitants continue to protect Noah until the "appointed time" arrives.

Tontatta Kingdom

The Tontatta tribe.

The Donquixote Family, the vicious rulers of the island of Dressrosa, oppressed the Dwarves of the Tontatta Kingdom before the Void Century. But the Dwarves were no longer aware of the events of the Void Century.

Wano Country

Wano Country's current layout.

Given that Pluton, one of the Ancient Weapons, is presently buried in the country's depths and that the Kouzuki Family was responsible for the creation of the Poneglyphs, Wano most certainly played a significant part in the Void Century and was somehow connected to the Great Kingdom. Wano was a very different place back then than it is now; rather than possessing the distinctive water-bowl mountain structure it does now, it was more like a usual island at sea level.

Kouzuki Oden discovered during his visit to Laugh Tale that even though the nation had previously been connected to the outside world, it had adopted an isolationist policy to defend itself against a "great enemy." As a result, enormous walls were built around the entire country, flooding everything below the top with rainwater and leaving only a few mountainside plateaus habitable. Oden believed that for the world to reestablish its connection with Wano, its boundaries must be opened before Joy Boy's return. That would also mean letting Pluton loose again.

Even though the World Government is unable to enforce the ban on research in Wano, the people of Wano appear to be unaware of the reasons behind their nation's isolation and the events of the Void Century. The majority of Wano residents are unaware of the outside world because it is illegal to leave the country.

Nefertari D. Lili

Queen Nefertari D. Lili's silhouette in the anime.

Nefertari Lili was the queen of Arabasta during the Void Century and one of the twenty royals to unite together against the Great Kingdom. The majority of the twenty monarchs that ruled the Great Kingdom chose to settle in Mary Geoise after it fell, and their descendants, known as World Nobles, left their kingdoms to start new royal families. Lili, however, decided to go back home. She did not leave the symbolic weapon at the Empty Throne as a result.

She vanished before returning to Arabasta, though, and all traces of her were erased. Only the note she left behind serves as evidence of her existence. Her younger brother later succeeded to the crown in her place. Imu is interested in her because of the error she made that caused the Poneglyphs to spread over the entire world. Imu is also particularly interested in Vivi, Lili's descendant.
