The Life of Monkey D. Dragon

Past

Monkey D. Dragon is the son of the Marine Admiral Monkey D. Garp. He was born in the Goa Kingdom. This is the only known information we know about Dragon's early childhood.

Dragon was present during Roger's execution, and soon after that, he was the captain of Freedom Fighters which was a poor military organization. It was then that he met Vegapunk and told him to join his group but he denied the request as there weren't a lot of resources that could help him build anything. Monkey D. Dragon also visited Ohara when it was in complete ruins to pay respects to all the victims of the massacre. He spoke with Vegapunk and told him that he would create an army that would prevent and stop destructive events like what happened to Ohara. In that year, Emporio Ivankov, Bartholomew Kuma and he formed the Revolutionary Army.

Over time, his ideas spread worldwide and he started getting support from people from different countries. Soon, he earned the name 'World's Worst Criminal'. Later on, Dragon had a child, Monkey D. Luffy, who he left with his father Monkey D. Garp to raise him in the East Blue.

When Dragon went back to his home i.e. the Goa Kingdom, he saw the Gray Terminal burning. Sabo begged him to save them and felt ashamed of belonging to the noble blood. Dragon immediately went to protect the people and embarrass the government in the process, by allowing the people from Trash Mountain to join him too.

When Sabo was just beginning his pirate journey, his ship was obliterated by a World Noble and Dragon saved him in time and brought him to his ship. After Sabo regained consciousness, he temporarily suffered from memory loss. Even though Dragon told him about his noble bloodline, Sabo insisted on staying with the revolutionaries and did not want to return. Thus, his life as a part of the Revolutionary Army began. Dragon trained him directly every day.

Lougetown Arc

When Dragon was walking through the streets of Lougetown, a storm had broken out. When he got to know that his son wanted to become the Pirate King, he was totally fine with his decision. When Smoker had Luffy pinned to the ground, Dragon intervened with a massive gust of wind which blew away the Marines, and Luffy was free. As the Straw Hats were setting sail, Dragon saw Luffy and told him that he should keep pursuing his dream no matter what happened. He then asked Smoker what reason did he have to prevent someone from setting sail.

Enies Lobby

While Dragon was in Baltigo, he saw Luffy’s new bounty and he heard his men talk about how Luffy was Vice Admiral Garp’s grandson. Dragon interrupted the conversation and left the room saying that he will stay on the balcony for a while. He then went to the castle’s balcony and said that the true nature of the world will soon be shown and that he would meet Luffy again.

Marineford War

After Whitebeard’s death and liberating the slaves at Tequila Wolf, Dragon said that he wanted to see Nico Robin, Luffy’s crew’s archeologist and the only person who survived the Ohara incident. After the War, some of the revolutionaries questioned Dragon if Luffy was really his son as the papers were saying. Dragon said that it was in fact true that he was Luffy’s father, which shocked his men.

Later in the headquarters, Dragon spoke with Ivankov through the Den Den Mushi, who told him about an article about Luffy and how both father and son are quite similar. Dragon told him then that Luffy is no longer a small child that needs to be looked after. He also said that he didn't expect Luffy to be under Ivankov’s protection during the war but is very grateful that it happened.

Dragon then told Ivankov that now that Whitebeard had died, they would need to gather all Revolutionary leaders in the world as the world’s balance would begin to shift. He then told him about Kuma too.

Zou

After Doflamingo was defeated, Dragon got a report saying that the rebel armies were succeeding around the world. When he spoke to Koala, he got to know that the weapons that they had got from Dressrosa had a special mineral called the Liquor Iron Ore. This could help them know where the weapons were made. After getting updates on Luffy, Sabo, and Robin, Dragon told Koala that she should gather all Revolutionary leaders.

Whole Cake Island

During the Whole Cake Island Arc, Dragon got to know about Blackbeard’s attack on Baltigo. The island was later destroyed by the Marines and Cipher Pol.

Levely Arc

After the Revolutionary Army escaped the destruction that happened on Baltigo, they moved their base to Momoiro Island. While waiting for all the revolutionary commanders to arrive, Dragon spoke to Sabo and they discussed their plan to declare war on the World Nobles during the Levely.

Wano Country

After the Levely, the Revolutionaries read some sad news about Sabo, and Dragon told his men that they should first confirm the news themselves before being sad about it. The news was that Sabo tried assassinating Nefertari Cobra during his mission.

Egghead

When the commanders came back with Kuma, Karasu told everyone that they had all split up with Sabo and the assassination that took place after the split up. Dragon and Koala had a talk in which Dragon said that if Sabo actually killed Cobra, then he wouldn't forgive him no matter what the reason would be. He then asked Kuma, who had been rescued from being a slave during Sabo’s mission, what had actually happened in Mary Geoise. Kuma, who was under the influence of his Pacifista programming, made a request while calling Dragon as Master. Later on, Sabo called the revolutionaries from the Lulusia Kingdom and said that he was not responsible for killing Cobra and saw that someone was sitting on the Empty Throne. This call was interrupted when the Lulusia Kingdom was destroyed by Im.

Later on, Dragon was on a call with Vegapunk, who told him that they were going to die soon and wanted Dragon to hear him out. Afterward, Kuma suddenly stood up and started running. Dragon was shocked and asked him where he wanted to go. He then watched Kuma use his abilities to teleport himself to an unknown location.

Personality

Monkey D. Dragon in One Piece

As Dragon was the leader of the Revolutionary Army, he was very dedicated to dismantling the World Government and its corrupted nobility system that allows its World Nobles to oppress the lower classes as they wished. He considers the corruption in his hometown Goa Kingdom to be the same problem but on a smaller scale. He was angry at the fact that this type of corruption caused a little boy like Sabo to denounce them. When he rescued Sabo the next day, Dragon was seen to have a very angry look on his face.

Dragon is very serious and business-minded and takes care to stay highly informed about the happenings of the world and educate his men about current affairs. Dragon usually reminds his men that the big war with the World Government is soon to come. He has been seen smiling at how the course of the world is changing, like how his son Luffy is a Pirate. Dragon is very secretive about his personal life and history as even the revolutionary army did not know that he was Garp’s son and Luffy’s father. He shut down an attempt by Ivankov to ask if he had family out in the world. When the news of his family came out during the Marineford War, Dragon said that it helped his men see him as a human for once.

Dragon is also a very empathetic person and especially to those who are oppressed by the World Government. He was seen checking on Sabo after he was thrown to the ground and took his denouncement of a noble status as a joke. He cares deeply for all the oppressed people by the World Government and the people from other islands. He tends to invite them to join in his fight for freedom. He also cares for his subordinates as we can see him asking Koala about Nico Robin’s well-being. As Ivankov thought that Ace was Dragon’s son, he expected Dragon to go and save Ace, which showed that Dragon expresses love and care towards his family and Luffy, despite not being involved in his childhood.

Dragon is known to be very unforgiving to those he considers to have done wrong and said that he would not forgive Sabo if he had actually killed Nefertari Cobra during the Levely Arc, no matter what the reason was, as killing regular royals is not what the Revolutionary army does

Appearance

Dragon is a middle-aged man who has black spiky hair and a tattoo on the left side of his face. The tattoo is dark red in color, he has a bit of stubble on his chin. He wore a long green cloak, under which he wore the orange clothing of the revolutionary. He is seen grinning usually. Only on rare occasions like Roger’s execution did Dragon not smile. Before Roger’s execution, Dragon did not have his tattoo or stubble. After the time skip, Dragon’s hair has grown a bit longer and it reached down to his back past his shoulders.

Relationships

Family

Monkey D. Luffy

Dragon was never a part of Luffy’s life. He told Garp, his father, aka Luffy’s grandfather, to take care of him. Luffy never knew or cared who his father actually was, but he found out from Garp later on that it was Dragon, when they met in Water 7 and he saw Dragon’s face in the newspaper after reading the report on Baltigo’s destruction. Luffy did not pay heed to his father as much as he did to Sabo. In the past, Ivankov said that Dragon used to look towards the East Blue from their base and thought that he had a family there. Dragon is supportive of Luffy’s life as a pirate and shows his approval of him becoming one when they met at Lougetown. Dragon wanted Luffy’s pirate life to play a role in the shifting of the world. Dragon saved Luffy from being captured by Smoker and said that he would reunite with his son again in the future.

Revolutionary Army

Sabo

Dragon first met Sabo when he saw him being thrown to the ground while in the Goa Kingdom. When they met briefly for a while, Sabo told him about his disgust over nobility and Dragon took his words seriously and he became angry that a child was affected by their corruption. Dragon saves Sabo from being killed by a World Noble and from that day onwards, Sabo became one of his most trusted members of the Revolutionary Army. He rose all the way up to the position of Dragon’s Chief of Staff and second-in-command. Dragon and Sabo work well together and Sabo told Dragon a lot about Luffy.

Emporio Ivankov

Emporio Ivankov is one of Dragon’s closest comrades in the Revolutionary Army. The two of them have been with each other for a long time and are seen discussing the Revolutionary Army’s course of action as well as personal matters. Even though Dragon has a tendency to not talk about himself a lot, Ivankov has always been perceptive about him and has inquired about Dragon’s ties with the Goa Kingdom and the East Blue. Even though they both are very close, Dragon shares very little personal information with him and doesn't like him to search up his history. Ivankov is very loyal to Dragon to the point that he had protected his son Luffy during Impel Down.

Bartholomew Kuma

Bartholomew Kuma is one of Dragon’s subordinates who knew about Dragon’s relationship with Luffy. Dragon got to know that Kuma was turned into the World Government’s weapon. After the Seven Warlords of the Sea was abolished, Kuma was liberated from the World Government. Dragon asked Kuma about what happened at Mary Geoise and Kuma confirmed his command by calling Dragon ‘master’.

Koala

Koala works directly under Dragon. She is the only assistant Fishman Karate instructor. After Koala came back to Baltigo after she came back from Dressrosa, Dragon thanked her for helping him find their lost men and retrieving the weapons from the island. Dragon trusts her so much that she can even carry out very important missions like summoning all the Revolutionary Leaders from around the globe.

Nico Robin

Dragon was interested in Nico Robin for a very long time as she was the only survivor from the Ohara incident who knew how to read Poneglyphs. The Revolutionary Army referred to her as the ‘Light of the Revolution’. Dragon wanted to meet Robin and told his men that they needed to protect her from the World Government while she was with them. Robin worked with Dragon and the Revolutionary Army during the time skip and Dragon was mindful of her decision of rejoining the Straw Hats crew. He was concerned when he read that she was captured in Sabaody Archipelago and asked Koala if she was doing well after she and Koala had met on Dressrosa.

Vegapunk

Vegapunk and Dragon have a pleasant friendship with each other. Even though Vegapunk shares the same thoughts as Dragon about the World Government’s corruption, he did not join the Revolutionary Army when asked as he thought that they were too poor to fund his research. Despite this, both of them have the utmost respect for one another and made sure that Clover, a famous archaeologist’s death would not be in vain.

Clover

Clover and Dragon used to be acquaintances before his death. Clover was a really great archaeologist who was known to stir up trouble. Dragon never believed that Clover was part of the plot to destroy the world. Dragon highly respected him to the point that he didn't allow the World Government to get away with the buster call they had called upon Ohara. Clover’s death made Dragon abandon his views against war and form an army that directly opposed the corrupt world.

Enemies

World Government

Dragon wants to bring down the World Government by overthrowing the World Nobles. This was because he was frustrated with the idea that these people have the power to take away people’s freedom for their gain.

Nobles

Dragon hates the nobles. He got to know about the Gray Terminal plan from Sabo. Dragon then hatched a covert rescue operation to save everyone living out there and asked everyone who was boarding the boat if they would fight against corruption.
