Cure

Who is Cure?
Source: YouTube

The Cure, an English rock band established in 1978 in Crawley, West Sussex, has had several lineup changes, with Robert Smith, the lead vocalist, guitarist, and lyricist, remaining the only permanent member. Bassist Simon Gallup has also played an important role, missing just around three years of the band's existence. Their debut album, *Three Imaginary Boys* (1979), established them in the post-punk and new-wave scenes. With their second album, *Seventeen Seconds* (1980), the band adopted a darker sound, influencing the gothic rock genre and subculture.

Early Life and Career as a YouTuber

The Cure's journey began in the early 1970s when the founding members attended Notre Dame Middle School in Crawley, West Sussex. Their first public appearance was in April 1973, as members of the school band Obelisk, at an end-of-year presentation. In January 1976, while attending St Wilfrid's Comprehensive School, a five-piece rock band named Malice was established, with Robert Smith on guitar, Michael Dempsey on bass, and many other schoolmates.

The band practiced songs by David Bowie, Jimi Hendrix, and Alex Harvey at a local church hall. However, by late April 1976, some members had gone, and the lineup had changed to include Lol Tolhurst on drums, Martin Creasy on vocals, and Paul Thompson on guitar. This lineup played three live gigs in December 1976. Following Creasy's departure in January 1977, and motivated by the emerging punk rock movement, the remaining members of Malice renamed themselves Easy Cure, a name inspired by a song written by Tolhurst.

Fast forward to March 2019, when Robert Smith discussed the band's future record with *Rolling Stone*. He claimed that the band had gone to the studio for the first time in 20 years, recording 19 songs that ranged in length from 10 to 12 minutes. Despite their plans to release the album by October 2019, it did not happen that year or in the following three years. In June 2021, Smith teased two new albums, one of which was characterized as "very, very doom and gloom." However, no release date was announced since Smith was still deciding who would mix the records.

Amidst these difficulties, bassist Simon Gallup made news on August 15, 2021, when he announced his resignation from The Cure on social media. He later removed the message, but by October 2021, he had affirmed that he was still in the band. Perry Bamonte rejoined The Cure for their Lost World tour, which kicks up on October 6, 2022, in Riga, Latvia.

The band's activities extended into 2023 with the announcement of a 30-date North American tour, their first full U.S. tour since 2016. Notably, Robert Smith took a strong stand against Ticketmaster's dynamic pricing mechanism and ticket scalping, calling for lower base rates and partial refunds for overcharged customers. This gesture demonstrated Smith's dedication to his fans and attempts to make his concerts more accessible to a wider audience.

Controversy

The Cure made history in late 1987 when they performed in Buenos Aires, Argentina, one of the first times a British alternative rock band had been in the nation. The concert was widely anticipated, with a large throng anxious to see the band live. However, the performance took an unexpected turn when a huge number of fans were denied admittance after inadvertently purchasing bogus tickets. This rejection caused a tumultuous scenario in which dissatisfied supporters exploded into a riot. Because of the event, The Cure did not return to Argentina for a concert until 2013, 26 years later.
