Jon “JonTron” Jafari and Arin “Egoraptor” Hanson started Game Grumps with a video of themselves playing Kirby Super Star that was posted on July 18, 2012. According to Jafari and Hanson, the two were debating whether or not the fighting game character Wolf from Super Smash Bros. Brawl was too similar to the character Fox in terms of their fighting styles, when they had the idea for the show. Hanson had the idea for a podcast centered around the two of them being “grumpy” with each other over video games after animator Ross O’Donovan revealed this to them. However, the show eventually evolved into a YouTube video series rather than a podcast.
“Kirby Super Star - Spring Breeze ADVENTURES! - GameGrumps” is the first video that was uploaded on the Game Grumps channel. In this video, the two original hosts of the channel play the game Kirby Super Star.
The lead singer of Ninja Sex Party, Dan Avidan, took over as co-host of the main show after Jafari left. Additionally, Ross O’Donovan and Avidan worked together as co-hosts of the PC gaming show Steam Train. A new show called Grumpcade, featuring any combination of co-hosts playing console games, was introduced in January 2015 to commemorate reaching two million subscribers. The show also includes YouTube personalities as guests, such as the game critics ProJared, The Completionist, and Markiplier. A short while later, in February 2015, GrumpOut was founded as a channel devoted to entertainment and live-action video projects.
In recent years, Game Grumps have diversified its content to include videos either barely related to video games or completely unrelated to them. These include the live-action comedies 10 Minute Power Hour and Good Content, as well as the YouTube Premium-only series Good Game. Two books by Game Grumps- Ghost Hunters Adventure Club and the Secret of the Grande Chateau, and Ghost Hunters Adventure Club and the Express Train to Nowhere, are also included. Permuted Press published the first book, which was made available on March 10, 2020.
