Career

Toby Turner has developed into a well-known figure on YouTube. He first gained fame through the Tobuscus channel and later through his secondary vlogging channel and gaming channel. Turner’s content is frequently flamboyant, rambling, and animated, but he never uses strong language and always censors any explicit material because of his target audience.

“Halo: Reach - Toby Sucks at Gaming - Part 6 (Let’s Play with Tobuscus)” is the oldest available video on Toby’s channel. In the video, he plays Halo: Reach as a part of his walkthrough series of the game.

In addition to his channels, Turner collaborated with Philip DeFranco on the films Like Totally Awesome (LTA), and Cute Win Fail after becoming friends with and working for DeFranco. During the late 2000s and the beginning of the 2010s, LTA was a gaming and review channel. Turner secured a contract with the multi-channel network Machinima in 2010 and switched, in July 2013, to Maker Studios.

On May 14, 2006, Toby Turner registered for a YouTube account and started a channel called “Tobuscus” The first video that is still available on the channel is a parody of the Click (2006) movie. “Don’t Tase Me, Bro!” is one of Turner’s most well-known films. It is a remixed recording of the University of Florida Taser incident, in which Turner’s student Andrew Meyer was shocked by a police officer using a taser gun.

Since then, the Tobuscus channel has kept its emphasis on humorous skits and animated sketches, getting praise for works like “I Can Swing My Sword” “Safety Torch” and “Nugget In A Biscuit”. Turner’s Literal Trailers series is one of his most well-known and has brought him mainstream acclaim from outlets like CBS News and Wired.

Turner’s Literal Trailer of Iron Man 3 was praised by both publications. He started posting daily unedited vlogs of his personal life on his “TobyTurner” channel in April 2009, which he called “lazy vlogs.” Turner launched a new run of humorous Let’s Play videos on his fourth (and third in use) YouTube account, “TobyGames” which he registered in July 2010. Since its start, the channel has included playthrough videos of many independent and big-budget games, including the enduring Minecraft and Happy Wheels series.

In addition to creating his own original content across three channels, Turner has collaborated on numerous projects with a wide spectrum of other YouTube stars. In 2009, he and Joe Penna (MysteryGuitarMan) performed a guitar duet using two different videos played simultaneously. In 2010, he made an appearance on The Annoying Orange’s “A Cheesy Episode” episode five. In early 2011, he collaborated with iJustine on several LittleBigPlanet 2 Let’s Play videos. And since 2011, he has collaborated on numerous projects with Jack Douglass, including the parody “Tobjackscus”.

Aside from these pieces of work, Turner has also co-created and co-produced a web series called CuteWinFail with Philip DeFranco and his production business, FishBowl Worldwide Media, since its debut in October 2010. His involvement with the project terminated in November 2012 after 100 episodes, though.

The romantic comedy New Low from 2010 gave Turner his first role in a full-length movie. He played stand-up comic Dave, Wendell’s best friend, who was portrayed by writer, producer, and director Adam Bowers. Later in 2012, he starred in the psychological horror thriller Smiley, written and directed by YouTube collaborator Shane Dawson and directed by Michael Gallagher. Additionally, Turner and Dawson appeared together in the 2015 comedy Bob Thunder: Internet Assassin.
