To get started on brewing potions, you will first need to understand how to brew an awkward potion.

To craft blaze powder, you just put a blaze rod in your crafting table or your inventory crafting UI. One blaze rod will create two pieces of blaze powder.
Blaze powder is used for many different things, but in this case, it is used as the fuel source for the brewing stand. The final section you need to look at is the bottom three boxes with the bottle outlines. This is where you will put your water bottles or potions. You can put one water bottle in each box, so fill all of the boxes up if you want three potions to be created, two if you want two potions, and one if you only want one.
There are many different types of potions in the game and each potion has a different effect. Currently, there are 15 potions in Minecraft. Although each potion has a different effect, they are all crafted by adding a specific item to an awkward potion.

Now that you have your water bottles, you need to gather nether warts. Nether warts can only be found in the nether, either in a soul sand garden in a Nether Fortress, or in the central courtyard of a bastion.
Now that you have acquired the nether wart and water bottle, you can create an awkward potion.
To make an awkward potion, you will need to place down a brewing stand and put the water bottle, or multiple water bottles if you want multiple awkward potions, in the bottom three boxes of the brewing stand.
Now you will need to put in some blaze powder to power the brewing stand. You will know when the brewing stand has power when the grey bar turns yellow just like the image below.
Next, you will need to place a nether wart in the top UI slot. Once you do this, the brewing stand will start to work.
After about 20 seconds, the water bottles will turn into awkward potions
When the below ingredients are mixed with awkward potions, it will result in a completed potion. Only a Potion of Weakness does not require an awkward potion base.
Some potions can be further brewed to make different effects. Adding a fermented spider eye to the brewed potion will change the effect of certain potions.
Any potion can also be enhanced with glowstone or have its duration extended with redstone. Adding glowstone dust will increase the potency of the effect, but lower the duration of the effect. Adding redstone dust will extend the time of the buff/debuff by a considerable margin.
