River in Minecraft

Rivers are a frequently occurring biome found all over the Overworld. Rivers can serve as borders between various other biomes, and usually lead to oceans, although they can also form loops. They are filled with water up to sea level, though rivers may run dry in certain areas due to being at a higher than usual elevation. When generated between two high-elevation areas, such as mountains and hills, river biomes may pose a fall damage hazard, but are otherwise mostly harmless.

Description

(via screenshot)

Rivers are thin, lengthy winding biomes made up of water blocks that are common in the Overworld. They're usually found at the border of the land biome and divide two biomes but are also found splitting single larger biomes. Unlike real rivers, river biomes lack current even while attempting to join with the ocean.

Rivers hold water at sea level, which means that they’ll run dry or frozen depending on altitude. Rivers can vary a lot in width and depth. In generally flat areas, rivers are usually around 10 blocks deep but in mountainous regions, rivers can reach over 30 blocks in depth which is comparable to deep oceans.

Mob Spawns

Since it's a water biome, the most common spawns are squid and salmon, but neither passive nor hostile mobs (except the drowned) spawn within river biomes.

Supply

Rivers are a great place to harvest a few key resources – sand, gravel, clay, seagrass, and sugarcane, as well as ink from squid. Riverbeds consist of dirt, sand, gravel, and clay, and are one of the few places where clay generates. Seagrass generates atop the riverbed, and sugar cane occasionally generates on the riverbank.

Conclusion

Rivers are a common sight in the Overworld, usually splitting two large biomes. They run at sea level attempting to reach the ocean but some rivers will end up looping around a biome. They’re a really good source of a few resources like clay, fish, seagrass and ink. Rivers are a safe place to be, without any hostile spawns. It also works in your favor if you’re being chased by a hostile mob and you stumble upon a river (you can pick them off with a bow or crossbow as they attempt to wade through).
