If you are looking to survive longer in Minecraft you ought to make some armor. Armor can protect you by having you take less damage from just about everything in Minecraft. Any physical attack, explosion, projectile, even fire can be mitigated with the right set of armor. You can even enchant your armor to take even less damage!
A set of armor will require twenty four pieces of either leather, iron, gold, or diamonds. The boots costs four, leggings costs seven, chestplate costs eight, and the helmet costs five for the total of twenty four pieces.
If you want to upgrade your diamond armor into netherite armor you will need a netherite ingot for each piece you want to upgrade. Each piece of armor will only cost one netherite ingot.
To craft your armor you will need the 3x3 crafting menu of the crafting table.
To make complete armor, start by creating individual armor pieces. A helmet is made by filling the first row completely and then two pieces of iron below the edges. A chest plate is made by placing iron in every slot except for the top middle slot. Leggings can be made by filling the entirety of the 1st and 3rd columns and another ingot in the top middle slot, and boots by placing four iron ingots in pairs with space between them.

There are six different types of armor you can have in Minecraft. Leather, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite are all craftable, but chainmail armor can only be found in world generated chests as well as a rare drop from mobs wearing the chainmail armor.
If you can gather a lot of leather you may want to make a set of leather armor. If cows are not as abundant in your world, I would recommend getting iron armor as soon as possible. Iron is relatively common and getting twenty four pieces of iron is easy to accomplish once you have a mine set up.

A chestplate is made by placing iron in every slot except for the top middle slot.
Leggings can be made by placing two columns of three iron ingots on the left and right and another ingot in the top middle slot.
Finally, you can make boots by placing four iron ingots in pairs with space between them.
You now have a full set of armor! Iron armor trivializes most overworld hostile mobs. In fact, while you are wearing a full set of iron armor, a creeper cannot kill you at full health. I stood right next to an exploding creeper and even took fall damage from the blast and ended up with two and a half hearts.
If you would like to upgrade your diamond armor into netherite armor, take a piece of diamond armor into a smithing table. Place your armor on the left slot and the netherite ingot on the right and you will upgrade your diamond armor into netherite armor.
You can equip your armor by holding the left shift key and clicking on the armor piece you want to equip. This can be done manually by clicking and dragging the piece of armor up to your armor slots in your inventory.
As long as your armor is equipped you will take less damage and your armor will slowly lose durability depending on how many hits you take.

Armor is one of those things you should always be considering in survival Minecraft. Getting killed by skeletons or zombies can be frustrating, but with a full set of armor, you have much less to worry about. You can even enchant your armor with fire protection, respiration, and feather falling to mitigate other sources of damage in Minecraft. A full set of armor will keep you safe, but not invincible. Take dangerous encounters carefully and remember to keep an eye on your armor’s durability meter and you can survive just about anything.
