When it comes to teaching others or leaving behind a large number of instructions in order to accomplish a certain set of goals, having an item leave behind such instructions will be necessary. In Minecraft however, sometimes having a sign with instructions will be inadequate, due to how small it is and how limiting your instructions will therefore be as a result.
This is why it is very helpful to have a board in assisting with your endeavors.
In a Nutshell:
To make a board in Minecraft, for those who desire to use this item, you will not be able to play it on anything except for the education edition of Minecraft. This means that Java and Bedrock versions will be incompatible for the use of this item and you will be required to have the education edition.

Once you are playing the education edition of the game you will have two avenues of gaining the item. You can scroll through the items menu where you can search for the board and put it into your inventory. The alternative however would be through console commands. The specific command to gain this particular item is as follows.
Command: give @p board 1 3
A Board is a theoretical cousin to the slate in that they both have a similar function. Where they differ is size and how much information they can hold. Unlike the slate which is 1 block tall and wide, a board is 2 blocks high and 3 blocks wide.
With this larger expansion, a board can hold a great deal more text or information than their smaller counterpart. What separates the board from a regular sign, however, is not just in how much more information than it can hold, but also in some of its core functions. One such core function includes the person who summoned the board being able to lock it from other people.
This prevents other people from changing any of the information that is already present on the board meaning that the information or instructions will remain where they are supposed to without interruptions.
To write whatever it is you desire on the board you need only to place anywhere that you would like and then press the use button to begin your written instructions. From there you can enter words into numbers or whatever it is you need to accomplish your objective. If you desire to write a lesson into the board you can do so. If you want to write a set of instructions with a task in mind that is also possible. With the extra space that the board gives you in comparison to the slate and the sign, you have a lot more room to work with.
With a board, making a set of instructions or advice that can be observed by others becomes much more feasible. In contrast to the slate, you have much more space to work with in terms of how much more content that you can write. Be sure to use the extra space to your advantage so that way you use this tool to its full potential.
