Monolith

Monoliths are areas of glitched terrain which occurred due to errors in the Perlin noise generator, which was used for the generation of terrain, in the late versions of Infdev and early Alpha versions of the game. Monoliths would cause the terrain to generate up to the height limit, stopping there abruptly while maintaining natural grass block and ore generation. They tended to occur on flat terrain.

Monoliths could, in theory, generate infinitely upward, only stopping due to the height limit which was 128 blocks at this point in the game's development. The area below the monoliths was hollow, except for water which would be generated at sea level, and a layer of bedrock at the bottom. Large monoliths may have small crevices where natural terrain was generated.

How are Monoliths Generated?

Monoliths were generated randomly in the world due to errors in the Perlin noise generator in early versions of the game. They usually generate on flat terrain. Large monoliths may have small crevices where natural terrain gets generated. In between Java Edition Infdev 20100624 and Java Edition Infdev 20100629, the bedrock layer underneath the monolith was raised up to sea level, making it easy to access the void underneath the monolith.

FAQs

Q. What caused the monolith in Minecraft?

A. Monoliths occurred due to errors in the Perlin noise generator in the late versions of Infdev and early Alpha versions of the game.

Q. Is the monolith still in Minecraft?

A. Monoliths have been patched and are no longer generated in Minecraft. Monoliths only occurred in late versions of Infdev and early Alpha versions of the game, but monoliths can once again be generated in 1.16+ using customized worlds. The settings to produce this are unknown.

Conclusion

While monoliths have been patched and are no longer generated in Minecraft, they are an important part of the Infdev and early Alpha eras of the game. As monoliths could, in theory, generate infinitely upward, only stopping due to the height limit of the game while maintaining normal ore and grass generation, they served to be a visually interesting bug. For this reason, they’ve remained a memorable part of early Minecraft.
