Minecraft Lectern

Minecraft is home to many blocks and items, many of which players can craft on a crafting table. Lecterns are handy items that they can obtain by crafting and from village houses.

They were added to the game in the 1.10 update released on June 8, 2016. To craft lecterns, gamers will need one bookshelf and four wooden planks. They can be of any type, but all four must be the same plank.

How to Craft a Lectern in Minecraft

Below are the required materials and the crafting recipe used to make a Lectern.

Required Materials to Craft Lectern

  1. 4 Wooden Slabs
  2. 1 Bookshelf

In order to obtain slabs, place three wooden slabs in a row in a crafting table. While the recipe for crafting a lectern does not require any specific slabs, you will need to use the same three planks to make slabs.

To make a bookshelf, you will need a row of books in the middle of the crafting table grid. Surround the row of books with wooden planks to make a bookshelf.

Step by Step guide: How to Use/Craft a Lectern

Below showcases the step by step process in crafting a lectern. You can also find out about every use for a lectern in Minecraft.

Step 1: Craft Wooden Slabs

You will need to break down some trees to collect logs. Each log you obtain will yield 4 wooden planks and you will need 3 wooden planks to make slabs.

Once your slabs are crafted you will need to gather the parts for a bookshelf.

Step 2: Craft a Bookshelf

You will need to kill a few cows to obtain enough leather to make a bookshelf. You need 3 books so you will need at least 3 leather.

After you have obtained the leather you simply need to collect enough sugar cane to craft into paper. 3 sugar cane will yield 3 pieces of paper.

Every 3 pieces of sugar cane is enough to make 1 book. As long as there are 3 pieces of paper and a piece of leather in the crafting grid, it will yield one book. The formation of the items does not have any impact on successfully crafting a book.

A bookshelf can be made simply by placing 3 books in a row in the middle of the crafting grid. Surround the books with wooden planks to get a bookshelf.

Step 3: Craft a Lectern

Now that you have all the materials, you can finally craft a lectern! Place the bookshelf in the middle-most cell and place wooden slabs in a row above the bookshelf and one slab below the bookshelf.

Uses of Lecterns in Minecraft

1. Librarian Villager Job site block

Lecterns are a job site block for librarians. Such blocks can be used to turn unemployed villagers (except nitwits) into librarian villagers. Librarians are among the best traders in Minecraft that offer enchanted books with rare enchantments like mending.

The best part about librarians is that players do not need to level them up to get rare enchantments. They can simply convert a villager into librarians and start trading enchanted books.

If the librarian does not offer the enchantment that users desire, the latter can break and place their lectern to change its offer. They can do this as many times as needed, as long as they haven't traded with the librarian before.

2. Placing books

Players can place a book and quill on a lectern. Lecterns are often used in multiplayer servers to leave a message for others. However, the books do not need to have something written inside to be placed.

To create a book with a message inside, users need a book and quill. They can craft it on the crafting table using one ink sac, one regular book, and one feather.

3. Redstone signal

It may not look like it, but lecterns can be used in redstone contraptions as well. They will emit a full-strength redstone signal when users turn a page on the book placed on it.

Lecterns are often used to make hidden doors, entrances, and adjustable enchanting tables.
