There are nine main types: Oak, Birch, Spruce, Dark Oak, Acacia, and Jungle, Warped, Crimson and Mangrove. Once you have decided upon the type of log you want, you need to find that tree in your Minecraft world. Craft an axe, and move towards the tree to harvest logs at a faster rate than by your hands. In Survival Mode, much of the initial gameplay depends solely on this resource as a player has to start harvesting logs to make any advancement since they pave the paths for crafting tools, items, etc.
Since there are various types of logs available to you, there are various options for you to choose from. However, the difference matters only in a few applications, with the most popular being the construction of buildings where different textures have the potential to spruce up the appearance. In contrast, tools will have the same texture regardless of the type of log used making the effort to specifically locate them futile.
Once you have decided upon the type of log you want, you now need to find that tree in your Minecraft world. For example, you will have to find an Oak tree for harvesting Oak logs. Oak trees are usually found in the Forest, Extreme Hills, Swampland or Mesa Plateau biomes.
If you have trouble finding a certain type of tree, unfortunately there is no easy answer. You simply need to explore more. Utilize traveling with Elytra, creating nether highways and riding a horse to cover a lot of ground quickly.

A. Wooden slabs are by far the best and most efficient fuel in Minecraft for the simple reason that you can make a lot of them out of just a few logs. 3 logs make 12 planks, which in turn create 24 wooden slabs, which all burn for 1.5 seconds. This means just 3 logs give you 360 seconds of burning time or a little over 1/3 of the burning time of a lava bucket.
