On March 28, 1954, Puerto Rico debuted the Telemundo trademark. The TV channel was formed by Ángel Ramos, proprietor of El Mundo, Puerto Rico's largest newspaper at the time, as well as the first station from Puerto Rico's radio station, WKAQ-FM (also known as Radio El Mundo). Ramos branded his properties WKAQ-Telemundo to keep a consistent brand that included the term "Mundo". Ramos had previously sought to secure a television license in the mid-1940s, but the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) moratorium on licensing for new American television stations meant he had to wait until 1954 to obtain the license.
Ramos initially maintained continuity between his radio and television stations by signing an exclusive contract with the most famous and influential actor, comedian, and producer in Puerto Rico, Ramón Rivero, also known as Diplo. His broadcast "El Tremendo Hotel" on WKAQ Radio is the most popular radio space in Puerto Rico's history. Rivero produced the first comedy and variety shows for WKAQ-Telemundo, including La Taberna India and La Farándula Corona, which helped WKAQ reach the top ratings.
