Career

Joe’s best-known show is Angry Reviews, in which he reviews eagerly awaited AAA games (and occasionally indie games) and discusses their strengths and weaknesses while performing quick sketches with his friend Joe Lopez, also known by the stage name “Other Joe.”

“S**t that Pisses Me Off - Madden 2009 Hardcore Gamers” is the first video on Joe’s channel. In the video, he talks about things that vex him in Madden 2009.

One of his most recognisable characteristics is the way he begins his reviews, which can range from a humorous sketch in which he parodies a specific element of the game he is reviewing. The phrase “You done f*cked it up!” is sometimes used by him to signify disappointment with the game he is about to review, that it did not live up to the hype, and/or that the developer/publisher handled it poorly.

The episodes of Angry Rant feature Joe ranting angrily about a topic that enrages him, such as a disastrous PC or console game release or a controversial announcement concerning an issue that Joe disagrees with, like Microsoft’s announcement of the Xbox One, the removal of a campaign from Call of Duty Black Ops IV, or contentious casting choices in upcoming movies.

One of Joe’s other well-liked series, Angry Movie Reviews, features Joe reviewing recently released movies with a group of his friends after seeing them in theatres. This group, primarily made up of Other Joe, Alex, and (before 2020) Delrith, discusses the positives and negatives of the movie and their individual viewpoints before rating it on a scale of 1 to 10, much like Joe’s Angry Reviews.

With the same format as the Angry Movie Reviews series, Joe has more recently expanded the Angry Reviews series to include television series. Joe, Other Joe, and Alex review a recently released episode of a show they are currently watching.

Joe creates Top 10 videos at the end of the year for the Best Games of the Year, Worst Games of the Year, Most Disappointing Games of the Year (discontinued after 2018; returned in 2021), and the contentious Top 10 Controversies of the Year.

  2. If a gaming controversy is significant enough, Joe addresses it outside of his Top 10 Controversies lists, usually through Angry Rants or in the game review itself, as he did with the Battlefront II loot box and microtransactions controversy.
  3. Joe gave some games, including Zelda: Breath of the Wild and 2018's God of War, his "highest" 9/10.

FAQs

Q. Does AngryJoeShow like PlayStation or the Xbox?

A. Joe considers himself impartial in the console wars, but since 2014, many have called attention to Joe's preference for PC gaming. This is further supported by a number of angry rants he has written about unsuccessful PC game releases like Battlefield 4 and Arkham Knight.

Q. What is Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game?

A. In collaboration with Jasco Games, Vargas launched a Kickstarter project in April 2018 to create a board game with miniature-sized figures of authorised Street Fighter video game characters. On its first day, the project's Kickstarter campaign brought in $400,000, which attracted media attention. Street Fighter: The Miniatures Game started shipping to Kickstarter backers in January 2021.
