Alex, aka Yandere Dev, is a 36-year-old independent American game developer based in California. On June 30, 1988, he was born and prior to creating Yandere Simulator, he worked for a video game firm for three years before leaving to pursue his ambition of becoming an indie game developer.

For an undisclosed business, he worked on five console games and five mobile games. YandereDev created numerous game prototypes between 2013 and 2014. However, none of them were successful. In a forum post in March 2014, he proposed the creation of a "school-girl serial killer simulator". The concept was well received, so he started working on the game.

Career

YandereDev has also produced two in-game video games: Yanvania: Senpai of the Night, which can be accessed when Pippi Osu is performing her assignment, and Magical Girl Pretty Miyuki. These games are playable in Ayano’s room on her gaming system. He also indicated a “true love” project he wished to complete.

When he proposed it, though, he received a lot of negative feedback. YandereDev used to make basic video games by scribbling characters and concepts around 15 years ago. He also experimented with programmes like RPG Maker but never took it seriously and in 2008, he got more serious about producing games.

“Original Yandere Simulator Prototype” is the oldest video on Alex’s channel. This video has 1.7 million views as of August 2024. He showcases a prototype of the “Yandere Simulator” game.

YandereDev was motivated to create games after playing lji, a game created by a man named Daniel Remar. YandereDev felt that because the game was created by one person, he could do the same. It piqued his curiosity to learn to code.

YandereDev attempted to make other prototype games before working on Yandere Simulator, but he was unable to do so due to a lack of 3D models. YandereDev discovered a very cheap schoolgirl character model for sale on the Unity Asset Store when looking for models.

He asked a friend what kind of game he would make if he had to use that protagonist model. A “juvenile delinquent” simulator was suggested by a buddy. YandereDev enjoys pushing ideas to their limits, so he questioned, “Why stop at a criminal? Why not turn her into a serial killer?” He then offered the idea for a “yandere simulator” to a popular message board.

YandereDev distributes test builds of the game on a regular basis for debugging purposes. Initially, ideas and bug complaints were received by email, but since 2016, he has requested that these emails be discontinued because they are “slowing down development”.

Twitch, the broadcasting site, placed the game on its list of prohibited explicit games in 2016. YandereDev blamed the restriction on “self-righteous ideologies” in a statement to Kotaku.

Personal Life

Although Alex regarded his childhood as “uneventful and fairly normal” he admits to being sheltered and overprotected to the point where exposure to the outer world causes anxiety. He only reintegrated into society after attending college in Santa Monica, California, where he earned an Associate of Arts in Animation, Interactive Technology, Video Graphics, and Special Effects.

Following that, he spent three years as a Junior Game Designer at Kung Fu Factory, where he worked on five console games and five mobile games.
