The Eye of Cthulhu is one of the first bosses players will fight, though it is technically optional. The Eye of Cthulhu will never go underground and has two phases which both float/fly.
The Eye of Cthulhu can be summoned by using a Suspicious Looking Eye at night (beginning at 7:30 PM in-game time). The Eye of Cthulhu also has a ⅓ chance of spawning if the following conditions have been met: the Eye of Cthulhu has not yet been defeated in the current world, at least one player in the world has at least 200 maximum health and more than 10 defense, and at least four town NPCs are present in the world.
The four town NPCs include the Traveling Merchant and town pets. If the player is underground, the Eye of Cthulhu will not spawn until they return to the Surface. Remaining underground all night will cause the boss to not spawn at all.
The Eye of Cthulhu has two phases and is able to fly through blocks during both phases. It will attempt to float above the player while spawning 3-4 Servants of Cthulhu. Once the Eye of Cthulhu falls below 50% health, it will transform into its second phase. In this second phase, it rams the player more aggressively three times, while letting out a roar, then hangs in the air for a period. It no longer spawns Servants of Cthulhu in the second phase, and has no defense, but now has increased contact damage.
In Expert mode, the Eye of Cthulhu will spawn more Servants of Cthulhu than normal. In the second phase, it will gain an additional powerful rapid chain dash attack and it lets out a higher-pitched roar every time it dashes.
The Servants of Cthulhu that are spawned during the battle will drop Hearts and Stars on death. The Eye of Cthulhu itself drops either Demonite or Crimtane Ore.
