Terraria Health and Mana Potions

Terraria is a game all about preparation and luckily there are many different ways you can prepare. One of them is to ensure you have a healthy stock of potions. Ensuring that you have the best healing potions can change the dynamic of a difficult fight dramatically. This is a list of every possible healing item you can obtain in Terraria. This list also includes the potential ways you can restore mana through consumables.

Recovery Potions

These potions will heal health, mana, or sometimes both while inflicting a de-buff on you called potion sickness. This is to ensure that Terraria is not simply preparing an inventory filled with health potions and tanking all the damage the game could throw at you. Potion sickness will prevent you from drinking a potion that restores health for typically 60 seconds. This debuff can be mitigated with certain accessories or different types of potions.

This debuff can be mitigated with certain accessories or different types of potions.

Mushroom

Mushrooms grow everywhere on the surface of your Terraria world. If you eventually run out, breaking grass will cause more grass, flowers, or mushrooms to grow in their place. Not only are mushrooms used for various potions, mushrooms can be eaten to heal 15 health. Mushrooms should only be eaten during the early stages of the game, but to compensate for its lower health restoration, the potion sickness de-buff only lasts for 30 seconds.

Bottled Honey

If you take a glass bottle to a liquid honey block you can make bottled honey. It is also used to craft the abeemination item to summon the Queen Bee boss. Eating this bottled honey will heal 80 health and cause potion sickness for 60 seconds. This is more cost effective than the lesser healing potion, but quickly becomes outclassed by the regular healing potion.

Lesser/Regular/Greater/Super Healing Potion

There are four tiers of healing potions you can find and craft in Terraria. All of these potions follow the same rule of inflicting potion sickness for 60 seconds. The lesser healing potion is the easiest to obtain as it only requires a mushroom, two glass bottles, and two gel to yield two lesser healing potions. This potion will heal you for 50 health. You can upgrade this lesser healing potion into a regular healing potion by combining two lesser healing potions with a glowing mushroom. This regular healing potion will restore 100 health. The greater healing potion is not upgraded from the regular healing potion and instead requires three bottled water, three pixie dust, and a crystal shard to heal you for a total of 150 health. Finally, the biggest heal you can receive from potions is the super healing potion. This one is made by combining four greater healing potions and one of each celestial pillar fragment. Each recipe will yield four super healing potions and will restore your health by 200. The super healing potion can also be dropped by the Moon Lord.

Restoration Potion

The restoration potion is a two-for-one potion that heals both health and mana. This is not recommended for dedicated mage players as this potion will still inflict potion sickness, preventing you from restoring mana with this potion. Luckily, the restoration potions only cause potion sickness for 50 seconds. A lesser restoration potion will heal 90 health and mana for the cost of one regular healing potion and one regular mana potion.

Lesser/Regular/Greater/Super Mana Potion

Players who like to cast a lot of spells will understand how quickly mana can seem to disappear. For these players, mana potions are a necessity as it allows you to sling spells more frequently. There are four stages of mana potion, similar to healing potions. Unlike healing potions, you can drink as many mana potions as you want, but the de-buff it inflicts is called mana sickness which will cut your magic damage by a rapidly decreasing percentage. Lesser mana potions cannot be crafted and have to be bought or found throughout the world, these potions will restore 50 mana. The merchant will sell lesser mana potions for 1 silver, you can find them in pots and chests, and you can find them on platforms placed in the dungeon. Regular mana potions can be crafted with two lesser mana potions and a glowing mushroom restoring 100 mana. Greater mana potions will restore 200 mana and can be bought from the wizard NPC for 5 silver. Super mana potions are made by sets of 15 and require 15 greater mana potions, a fallen star, 3 crystal shards, and a unicorn horn. These potions will restore a whopping 300 mana, which requires a decent set of armor to even achieve a maximum this high.

Bottled Water

Bottled water is another healing item you ought to skip unless you are hard-pressed for resources. They are relatively cheap to make as you simply have to stand next to a water source and have glass bottles in your inventory. They only heal a meager 20 health points and still inflict the full 60 seconds of potion sickness. You ought to maintain your bottled water for potion recipes, not for health restoration.

Eggnog

Eggnog is a Christmas event item. If you did not know, Terraria will check your desktop’s calendar, and if it is Christmas, special enemies will spawn that can drop presents. You can open these presents for a variety of blocks and Christmas-themed items, and one of those items is eggnog. Eggnog will restore 80 health which makes them a good early game drop for health restoration, but will still inflict the potion sickness buff for 60 seconds.

Honeyfin

The honeyfin is a special fish that can be caught from jungle biomes if you fish in honey. Pre-hardmode honeyfin is the highest health restoration you can receive from eating or drinking potions. Eating a honeyfin will grant 120 health and because honey only offers a select few fish, it can be easy to stockpile many honeyfin to get you into hardmode.

Strange Brew

Strange brew is a potion bought from the wandering skeleton merchant underground. It offers the highest mana restoration in the game at 400 mana restoration, however, it suffers from the same detriment of restoration potions where it heals 80 health therefore inflicting potion sickness for 60 seconds. The benefit of drinking strange brew is reducing the frequency of mana sickness to ensure you deal a large amount of magic damage. However, if you are not confident in your evasive capabilities you ought to avoid this one.

In a Nutshell

Honeyfin is the best possible health recovery item you can obtain pre-hardmode. Stay away from restoration potions or strange brew if you are interested in spending a lot of mana quickly. For hardmode, the best healing potions you can obtain would be greater healing potions. At the earliest stage of the game you can make use of mushrooms' low potion sickness de-buff to restore small amounts of HP quickly.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know of every possible way to heal your character through consumables. Picking the right potion is simply picking the potion that heals the highest amount that is offered at your current stage of the game. Knowing some of the finer details can help you approach different stages of the game, and grant you an advantage for tackling some of the harder encounters in Terraria.
