Hellstone is the last tier before hardmode. If you are a melee build you may want to seek out the best armor you can get before heading into hardmode. A full set of molten armor will grant you the best melee buffs that you can get pre-hardmode and the highest defense rating. Making hellstone bars is required to get the molten pickaxe which allows you to begin mining for hardmode ores. Hellstone bars have a different recipe than most bars in the game and require different crafting stations.
- Three hellstone ore
- One obsidian
- Hellforge
To mine hellstone ore in the first place you will need at least the deathbringer/nightmare pickaxe depending on whether the corruption or the crimson generated in your world. Defeat the Brain of Cthulhu or the Eater of Worlds to craft this pickaxe.
The recipe for hellstone bars does not just require the ore, each bar requires one piece of obsidian to craft.
Finally, the crafting station for a hellstone bar is not just a regular furnace. You will need to find a hellforge from the underworld in order to unlock the recipe for hellstone bars.
Hellstone generates in the underworld. You can utilize the generated structures to get close to hellstone. Stay above the hellstone or keep a wall between it and your player character as each hellstone ore you mine will release lava. Try not to stand on the hellstone itself. Not only does it release lava it will burn you if you stand on it.
Hellstone really stands out between the ash of the underworld. Mine it with your pickaxe and stand clear of the lava that will spawn out of it.
Luckily, hellstone does not melt in lava, do not worry about catching it before the lava melts it.
While you are mining for hellstone keep an eye out for a hellforge.
These red hot furnaces will generate in any of the obsidian towers found in the underworld. Break it with your pickaxe and keep it safe until you can return home.
Finally you will need to mine some obsidian. Water burns out quickly in the underworld but you can still use a water bucket or an endless water bucket to turn a lot of the lava in the underworld into obsidian. Lava does generate in other deep reaches of your world so if the environment of the underworld is too hostile, search for a pool of lava close to the bottom of your world.
Obsidian will spawn when lava has contact with water. Drain water into lava or pour the water yourself. Mine some obsidian with your pickaxe.
With your hellforge, hellstone ore, and obsidian in tow you have all the necessary ingredients to make hellstone bars. Head back up to the surface and place your hellforge.
Place and stand next to your hellforge with at least three hellstone ore and one obsidian in your inventory.
That is all you need to craft hellstone bars!
A. Hellstone cannot be mined with pre-hardmode explosives. Once you have defeated the Wall of Flesh you can use any explosive to break hellstone en masse. Before then, you will need to mine it yourself with the appropriate pickaxe.
A. Molten armor is made from hellstone bars. The helmet is made with ten hellstone bars, the chestplate with twenty, and the greaves with fifteen. This totals out to forty five hellstone bars in order to make a full set of hellstone armor.
