Tanner, after finishing college in 2000, was hired by the New York-based Merrill Lynch financial services as an analyst in the energy and power department. He worked there for two years before joining Morgan Joseph & Co., Inc. as the vice president of the media and entertainment department. He was there for the following six years, working about a hundred hours per week. Tanner revealed that it almost killed him.

In 2009, Tanner quit his job at Morgan Joseph & Co., Inc. to open a Korean BBQ restaurant. The venture was quite successful.
