Career

Tanner, after finishing college in 2000, was hired by the New York-based Merrill Lynch financial services as an analyst in the energy and power department. He worked there for two years before joining Morgan Joseph & Co., Inc. as the vice president of the media and entertainment department. He was there for the following six years, working about a hundred hours per week. Tanner revealed that it almost killed him.

In 2009, Tanner quit his job at Morgan Joseph & Co., Inc. to open a Korean BBQ restaurant. The venture was quite successful. In the years to come, he opened three more restaurants but eventually realized that he did not have a real passion for making food as much as eating. During this period, he also became interested in social media. In 2014, he sold all his restaurants to pursue a career as a comedian and social media influencer.

Sometime in 2013, Tanner created his account on Vine. According to him, he was initially making videos so he could entertain people. He had no intention of becoming a comedian. At the height of Vine’s popularity, he had over three million followers and advertisement deals with brands such as Pepsi, Hewlett Packard, Virgin Mobile, Dunkin Donuts, Gap, Budweiser, Kia, Comcast, TBS, Charmin, Marvel, Smirnoff, TNT, VH1, Spotify, and Adult Swim.

Tanner had originally started uploading photographs on Instagram in April 2012. In August 2013, he announced that he would start uploading videos on the app soon. He posted his first comedy sketch on Instagram in September of that year. In the video, he attempted to scare random strangers with a fake snake. Over the course of the next few years, he continued to post on the platform but Vine was still his first preference.

However, after Vine closed down for good in 2017, Instagram became his primary social media platform. He has over 3.6 million followers on it and garners hundreds of thousands of views per episode.

Tanner created his YouTube channel while he was still working for Morgan Joseph & Co., Inc., in May 2007 and uploaded his first video, titled “~ Canon Rock ~ better than funtwo!!” on the same day. After he became a social media-based comedian, he started posting content on YouTube as well. As of 2022, he has over 9.9 million subscribers on his channel and over 1.1 billion views.

As with Instagram, he regularly gets hundreds of thousands of views on YouTube. His most popular video on the platform is ‘10 Hours of Walking in NYC as Kim Jong Un’ with over 18 million views. His other popular videos include ‘Bad Bunny X Ozuna X Nicky Jam - "Te Bote Remix" - Singing in Public!!’ with 11.4 million views, ‘Dame Tu Cosita Challenge (The New Version!!) in Public!!!’ with 11.3 million views, and ‘Best of Bad Bunny - Singing In Public Compilation by QPark!!’ with 9 million views.

Tanner turned to TikTok in hopes of rekindling the short-form content that he used to create on Vine. He has been a huge success on the platform with over 32 million fans and over 373 million likes. He usually posts the same type of content on his TikTok as well. Tanner is active on other social media platforms as well. He has over 87k followers on Twitter and more than 10 million followers on Facebook. He came out with his first single called "AY AY AY" and it was featured in an article on Billboard in January of 2020.
