Montero Lamar Hill, best known by his stage name Lil Nas X is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter. Nas gained popularity worldwide for his 2018 released country rap single Old Town Road. The success of his song led to him signing with Columbia Records to release his debut extended play. Right after this, the rapper began releasing singles which were all hits, one after the other.
His debut studio album Montero boosted Lil Nas’ success. His album peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 and in just a little time, the rapper went on to become the youngest honoree in the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. Nas was born on April 9, 1999, in Lithia Springs, Georgia, U.S. His song style is described as hip hop, pop rap, and country rap.
In 2021, rapper Lil Nas X collaborated with New York-based art collective MSCHF to make ‘Satan Shoes’. The shoes were made using Nike Air Max 97s despite the brand expressing that they were not officially supporting the idea or promoting it in any way. Speaking about the looks of the Satan shoes, each pair was black and featured a bronze pentagram on the laces and an
inverted cross. The sides of the shoes had the Biblical passage Luke 10:18 inscribed on them. The most amusing and controversial aspect of the shoes was that they consisted of real blood. According to MSCHF, the satan shows were made with “60cc of ink and 1 drop of human blood”.

Despite the Satan shoes being inspired by the Nike Air Max 97s, the brand had no involvement in its production. The Satan shoe was solely a collaboration between Lil Nas X and MSCHF. In a statement to the New York Times, Nike said, “We do not have a relationship with Little Nas X or MSCHF. Nike did not design or release these shoes, and we do not endorse them.”
Nike later sued the art collective for trademark infringement, false designation of origin, trademark dilution, and unfair competition. Both parties came to a settlement in July 2021 which was MSCHF offering refunds to any buyer who wished to return their shoes.
As per records, there were only 666 pairs of Satan shoes made. As per the MSCHF co-founder Daniel Greenberg, those 666 pairs sold out in less than a minute post its release. The pair were priced at $1,018. The shoes were released right when Lil Nas’s single Montero (Call Me By Your Name) was released. Eagle-eyed fans spotted the use of the Satan shoes in his music video. Satan in the music video was wearing the sneakers while Lil Nas X gave him a lap dance in the video.
