Janesa Jaida Barrett (b. August 6, 2002), known professionally as Nessa Barrett, is an American internet personality, singer, and songwriter. Barrett was born and brought up in Galloway Township, New Jersey. She said that she had been interested in the performing arts since she was very young. She cites artists like the Arctic Monkeys, Lana Del Rey, Melanie Martinez and The Neighbourhood as her musical influences.
Barrett first became famous on TikTok in 2019 for her original music and covers. Later, in mid-2020, she released her debut single, “Pain” and since then, she has released EPs and singles. In 2020, she moved from New Jersey to Los Angeles, to focus on her music career. As of 2023, she has 10.3 million followers on TikTok, 1.2 million followers on YouTube, 6.9 million followers on Instagram and 2 m followers on Twitter.
Nessa first became popular on TikTok in the year 2019. She mainly posted videos of her lip-syncing to trending audios, trending dances and challenges on the app. She also posted music covers on the app. In 2020, Warner Records reached out to Nessa, signing her onto the label. Jxdn and Barrett performed the single on the talk show ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ on April 7, 2021. They also performed the single on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ on April 12, 2021. As of 2022, the song has over 50 million views on YouTube, and over 12 million streams on Spotify. On June 25, 2021, Barrett released the single “ Counting Crimes”, which she says is about accountability and owning up to one’s mistakes and faults.
Later in July 2021, she confirmed that she would be releasing her first EP called Pretty Poison, which was later released on September 10, 2021, featuring six tracks. The release date was the same as World Suicide Prevention Day and Barrett said that it was important for advocacy of proper mental health care.
In August 2021, she made her debut on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart with her single “I Hope Ur Miserable Until Ur Dead’. The song charted at number #88 on the chart. The song has 13 million views on YouTube and over 15 million streams on Spotify.
Barrett has partnered with various brands such as VintageWaves/ Major Waves, Novashine for brand deals and promotions. Nessa also launched her own line of merchandise in 2020.
Nessa was the subject of controversy when she posted a video on TikTok, dancing to what were Hadiths from the Quran. She faced criticism for the same, with many calling her Islamophobic. She later apologized and deleted the video, saying that it was not her intention to offend any person, citing that her step-mother is from Egypt.
