SMG in GTA 5

The SMG is a lighter and more compact machine gun and it is based on the real-life MP5A3. It has shorter magazines than the real gun and the iron sights are somewhat like the CZ Scorpion Evo 3 A1.

The SMG can take out pedestrians in a single shot whereas a target that has armor on may require a few more hits. Non armored vehicles catch fire after emptying around 2 mags (60 rounds) on the engine of the vehicle and explode after 3 mags all on an average.

The automatic firing with the magazine capacity of 30 rounds makes this weapon very effective to take out multiple targets in a spray. However at longer ranges this gun does not perform well.

The iron sight too makes it difficult to aim and one cannot use the SMG in a drive-by shooting, as the gun is too large to be used as a drive-by weapon. The Micro SMG is used in drive-by shootings.
