In the Boruto anime, Gatai and his friend make a grand entrance at the Hyuga clan's residence, boisterously challenging Hiashi Hyuga to a duel. In response, Hanabi is delegated by her father to handle the intruder, much to Gatai's displeasure.
Hanabi calmly informs him that Hiashi is currently absent. Disbelieving her words, Gatai insists on being presented with the head of the clan. Hanabi repeats that Hiashi has indeed departed, but Gatai arrogantly declares himself the victor by technical knockout, claiming that his opponent was intimidated and fled.
Later, at Thunder Burger, Boruto Uzumaki, and Mitsuki encounter Gatai and his partner. Gatai proceeds to belittle the Hyuga clan's strength, which infuriates Boruto due to the disrespect shown to his grandfather. In a fit of anger, Boruto rebukes Gatai, prompting his partner to mock the Hyuga clan's loyalty.
This remark only fuels Boruto's anger, and he challenges Gatai to a fight. Gatai agrees and powers his weapon with Lightning Release chakra, launching an attack. However, Boruto swiftly strikes Gatai in the stomach, briefly incapacitating him.
Gatai recovers quickly and launches a barrage of attacks, causing widespread destruction. Boruto realizes that Gatai's actions are endangering the city and attempts to end the fight with a Rasengan. Just then, Hiashi appears and intervenes, halting the fight.
Gatai criticizes Hiashi for not accepting his challenge, but Hiashi rebuffs him, stating that it was his own fault for provoking Boruto into the fight. Hiashi then offers to take on Gatai himself, but Gatai, seeing the seriousness in Hiashi's eyes, declines and makes a hasty retreat with his weapon.
Although Gatai is a skilled shinobi, he is arrogant and overestimates his abilities, and underestimates others, like Hiashi Hyūga. Despite his claims of being the strongest shinobi in Konohagakure, his claims are unfounded.
In a display of arrogance, he loudly proclaims that Hiashi is afraid of him in a crowded cafe. However, Hiashi's mere serious glance is enough to dissuade Gatai from engaging in a fight, showcasing the immense power and authority he holds as the head of the Hyūga clan.
Gatai is a man of medium height with a stocky, muscular build. He has a bald head, gray eyes, a dark beard, and thick eyebrows. His attire consists of a white kimono with the sleeves torn off, which is tied with a black waistband.
He wears gray pants and a pair of sandals. Underneath his kimono, Gatai sports a gray turtleneck. Additionally, he wraps bandages around his wrists and ankles.
Gatai's physical strength is formidable, evident in his ability to wield a massive club with ease and demolish structures in Konohagakure effortlessly. He also proves to have a high level of endurance when he takes a powerful strike from Boruto Uzumaki to the stomach but manages to recover rapidly without any issues.
Gatai exhibits proficiency in Lightning Release, as demonstrated by his ability to imbue his club with lightning chakra, greatly enhancing the destructive power of his strikes.
