Maruta lived in the mountains, where he raised and taught hawks. Many people, including powerful ninja, wanted a Senri Hawk, but few could earn the hawks' respect. When Mozu Shitakiri asked Maruta about the hawks, he refused to share, suspecting Mozu's ill intentions. Sasuke Uchiha and Boruto Uzumaki later arrived, and after Maruta understood their sincerity, he agreed to help Sasuke get a Senri Hawk.
Maruta faced challenges orchestrated by Mozu but remained determined to protect the endangered species. Despite tempting offers, Maruta stood firm. When Sasuke and Boruto proved genuine, Maruta shared the secret location. In a cave, he revealed that the key to bonding with a hawk was letting them choose their master. To Maruta's surprise, a hawk quickly accepted Sasuke, showing his strength of character.
Returning home, they discovered Boruto had befriended Mozu's son, Tsuzura. After helping Tsuzura gain the confidence to leave his mother's abuse, Maruta agreed to take him as an apprentice.
