Nagato Uzumaki was the leader of Akatsuki. He gave each of the Akatsuki members rings to be worn on a specific finger. All the rings had Japanese Kanji symbols that are related to Chinese Mythology. Each member is supposed to stand on a specific finger of the Gedo Statue, which is the same finger as the one on which they wear the ring.
The rings help the members in sealing tailed beasts into the Gedo statue. The rings are very important and irreplaceable. The different Kanji on their ring would appear to indicate that the sealing was taking place. The ring was made by Nagato, and due to transferring the chakra between the rings, it also acts as a communication device between the members.
This also allows him to keep tabs on all the members. This ring helped the members to project themselves during meetings.
