White Zetsu

White Zetsu is a fictional character in the popular manga and its anime adaptation, the Naruto series written by Masashi Kishimoto. White Zetsu was a member of the criminal organization Akatsuki in the series. For most of the duration of the series, White Zetsu appeared with Black Zetsu attached to his body.

Disclaimer: This article will contain spoilers for the popular series Naruto and Naruto Shippuden. Readers are advised to read at their discretion.

When Kaguya Otsutsuki exploited the inhabitants of her country as food for the God Tree during the Ancient Era, White Zetsu was the by-product that was created as a result of the God Tree robbing its victims of their life energy. Black Zetsu removed him from the GedoStatue. He was then given Hashirama Senju cells by Madara Uchiha.

After collaborating with Black Zetsu, he later joined the Akatsuki. He began by gathering intelligence for the group, but later became heavily involved in the Fourth Great Ninja War.

Despite the fact that he was less useful in direct conflict, he nonetheless established himself as a vital team player with his extraordinary abilities. He was able to share his body with Black Zetsu and even split into two separate entities, enabling the latter a separate body to carry out his duties.

He had the ability to make many identical copies of himself and could telepathically interact with them. Spore Technique, a special talent only accessible to White Zetsu, enabled him to attach spores to other people's bodies.

When these spores were activated, they surrounded the target's body and ate away at their chakra, limiting their ability to move. They could subsequently give their allies access to the chakra they had absorbed.

At the end of the Fourth Great Ninja War, all the White Zetsus were believed to have been destroyed, but they reemerged in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, believed to be residing in certain secluded locations.

White Zetsu’s Background

White Zetsu was among the first victims of the Infinite Tsukuyomi cast by Kaguya Otsutsuki in the Ancient Era. White Zetsu was somewhat of the by-product created by God Tree after it consumed the entirety of their life force and left nothing other than a husk of their former self.

Kaguya was creating an army of White Zetsu for fighting off the members of her clan if they ever attacked the earth. After the Ten-Tailed Beast was defeated and Kaguya was sealed by Hagoromo and Hamura Otsutsuki, White Zetsu remained trapped in the husk of the Ten-Tails, the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, also known as the Gedo Statue, for centuries.

After Madara Uchiha fought against Hashirama Senju and stole a portion of his flesh, he summoned the Gedo Status with his newly acquired legendary Dojutsu, the Rinnegan. Madara imbued Hashirama’s cells in the husk of the Ten-Tails, and Black Zetsu extracted White Zetsu among other victims of the God Tree.

Black Zetsu convinced Madara that they were artificially created humans created by the Gedo Statue with a combination of its chakra and Hashirama’s cells. White Zetsu among other mutated humans were tasked to gather intel for Madara because of their unique abilities. Two of them, one with a spiral-patterned face, were also tasked to watch over Obito Uchiha who was recovering from his injuries.

After Obito had recovered and was training to regain and improve his physical prowess, White Zetsu informed him of the attack on his friends and former teammates, KakashiHatake and Rin Nohara. Obito wished to help his friends but was unable to break out of their hideout due to his fragile body.

Spiral-faced Zetsu offered to help him and encased Obito’s body with its own, and then guided him to the location of his friends. After Obito eliminated the Hidden Mist’s Anbu unit, White Zetsu informed Madara of the incident that transpired upon their return to the hideout.

When Madara was done training Obito for his goal and was on the verge of death, he imbued the right half of White Zetsu with Black Zetsu. Madara believed Black Zetsu to be the incarnation of his will and was tasked with aiding Obito in his missions. Obito later assumed Madara’s identity and approached Nagato Uzumaki alongside Zestu in the Hidden Rain Village.

Later Zestu became a member of the criminal organization, the Akatsuki, and was a major part of the Fourth Great Ninja Way. Obito used an army of White Zetsu to fight against the Allied Shinobi Forces. The White Zetsu Army used its Substitute Technique to impersonate the members of the Allied Shinobi War and ambush them by infiltrating their ranks.

The technique they used created indistinguishable substitutes that copied the appearance and capabilities of their target to the last detail. Only Naruto Uzumaki was capable of exposing them by detecting their evil thoughts and their intent to kill.

All of the White Zetsus were thought to have been annihilated after the conclusion of the Fourth Great Ninja War, but they appeared again in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, where it was discovered that they were hiding out in some remote areas.

Personality

White Zetsu’s personality could be compared to the personality of a child who had gained conscience recently. He was highly energetic, and playful and was often curious about things he came across in daily life. He would often pull pranks on others. Unlike his counterpart, Black Zetsu, White Zetsu enjoyed conversing with others.

Due to this quirk of his, he was often referred to as a chatterbox or wagging tongue on English TV. White Zetsu was loyal, obedient, and trustworthy in nature. He would follow all the instructions given to him to the letter. He was entrusted with the crucial task of gathering intel for the organization and was privy to the secrets of the Akatsuki.

Some could say that White Zetsu did not possess a will of his own. White Zetsu did not have any goal of his own or any kind of agenda he was pursuing. He always acted under the instructions he received from Madara or Obito Uchiha.

Appearance

White Zetsu had a proper eye, human-like facial features, and oddly rounded teeth. His Venus flytrap-like protrusions were white and stretched outward from his body along the right side of his torso when Madara initially roused him.

The two extensions, resembling a Venus flytrap, that swelled up from the sides of the two Zetsu when they were together and formed a shell around their heads and upper bodies that they could open and close made them instantly identifiable. White Zetsu had short green hair and a single yellow eye underneath these extensions.

Black Zetsu covered the right side of his torso. The two Venus flytrap-like extensions that protruded from the sides of the two Zetsu's combined bodies, encasing their heads and upper bodies as a shell that they could open and close, helped to identify the two Zetsu when they were together.

White Zetsu had short green hair and a single yellow eye underneath these extensions. Black Zetsu covered the right side of his torso. They had both of their legs bandaged and were dressed in blue pants and sandals underneath their Akatsuki cloak.

White Zetsu’s Abilities

The Fourth Great Ninja War had significant involvement from White Zetsu. Even though he wasn't as effective in direct combat, his exceptional skills helped him establish himself as an important member of the team. He was able to split into two independent entities and even share his body with Black Zetsu, giving the latter a second body in which to perform his duties.

He possessed many astonishing abilities that were unique to him. He was capable of creating numerous clones and could communicate with them telepathically, which proved to be a vital ability in intel-gathering missions. Over long distances, they would extend their roots in the ground to communicate.

White Zetsu alone has the unique ability to attach spores to other people's bodies, known as Spore Technique. When activated, these spores enveloped the target's body and devoured their chakra, impairing their mobility. The chakra they had absorbed may then be made accessible to their comrades.

White Zetsu was also stated to be capable of performing the best transformation technique. He was capable of creating indistinguishable substitutes for various individuals with his transformation technique. He was capable of exactly copying all the details of their target to the last detail, including their chakra signature.

He would even copy the chakra nature and the techniques of his targets. He was capable of manipulating any charka nature he needed. This means he was capable of Water Release, Earth Release, Wind Release, Fire Release, Lightning Release, Yin Release, and even Yang Release.

White Zetsu was capable of surviving without any food or water, a side benefit he had as a mutated human. He was also capable of devouring his targets, either to trap them or dispose of them. He was often tasked to dispose of the dead bodies of fellow Akatsuki members or allies.

He was able to heal his wounds or any injuries he sustained at an extraordinary rate without performing any hand signs. It was an ability he acquired because his body was mostly formed of Hashirama’s cells. He would often graft his limbs or other parts of his body on the bodies of his allies if they sustained a life-threatening injury or lost a limb.

Here is a list of the techniques that White Zetsu showcased in the series:

  1. Chakra Transfer Technique
  2. Mayfly
  3. Parasite Clone
  4. Regeneration Ability
  5. Spore Technique
  6. Substitute Technique
