Akamaru was entrusted with Kiba to be his partner while Kiba was still in the Academy. The two soon became inseparable even though Akamaru almost urinated on Kiba’s face on their first meet.
During the first round of the Chūnin exams, Akamaru assisted Kiba in cheating by sitting on his head, looking out for proctors and gathering information from other students’ sheets. Afterward, on their way to the Second Test, Kiba ordered his group to pause on the route to the tower to look into Gaara’s encounter with Team Shigure. Akamaru was terrified after sending Gaara’s chakra. He was traumatized by witnessing Gaara ruthlessly murder all three Ame Genin.
Akamaru and Kiba engaged in combat with Naruto during the Second Round of the Chūnin Exams. Akamaru transformed into Kiba’s clone, making it difficult for Naruto to counter. Later, Naruto tricks Kiba by transforming into Akamaru’s form and then ambushing him after emerging from a smoke bomb. Naruto transformed into Kiba when Kiba utilized the Beast Human Clone technique to stop the latter from assaulting him. However, when Kiba discovered his scheme, Naruto changed into Akamaru to fool him into thinking he had hit Akamaru. Then, thinking Akamaru was Naruto, Kiba punched him.
Akamaru and Kiba were eliminated in the finals. After Hinata was cured by Kabuto Yakushi, Akamaru tried to warn Kiba about Kabuto after realizing who he was. Kabuto knocked out Kiba with his Medical Ninjutsu. What happened to Akamaru after Kiba passed out, still remains a mystery.
After the Konoha Crush, Akamaru was spotted among the other villagers during the Third Hokage’s funeral.
Akamaru and Kiba set out on a quest to find Sasuke along with their group. Akamaru and Kiba worked as a two man team combining their attacks to counter Orochimaru’s allies Sakon and Ukon. Akamaru and Kiba combined to form Double Wolf Fang, a combination they learned over time.
While they were falling short in the battle, Kankuro, a shinobi from Sunagakure, arrived just in time to save the day and defeat the enemy. During the mission, Akamaru sustained severe but not life-threatening injuries. He was later sent to recovery and stayed beside Kiba while they both recovered from the wounds inflicted on them in the battle. Observing Akamaru’s injuries, Kiba decided to protect his companion better and vowed to improve his skills.
Kiba became eager to outdo his fellow Konoha-nin after Naruto left the village for three years to train with Jiraiya. Kiba was envious of Naruto’s recent good fortune. As a result, Akamaru and Kiba underwent new training to strengthen their Combination Transformation abilities. Akamaru and Kiba laboriously created their Three-Headed Wolf Technique after being inspired by Naruto’s use of shadow clones as battle assistance. Konohagakure and Sunagakure decided to host the Chūnin Exams two years early after Naruto left. As usual, Akamaru enrolled in the examination with Kiba.
After Kiba qualified for the first exam, Akamaru joined Kiba in Sunagakure for the second exam. The nature of the second exam was similar to the one Konoha previously held. When the team faced off against another Kusagakure-nin team, Akamaru teamed up with Kiba to take on Burami, who utilized his large stature to his advantage by taking all of Kiba and Akamaru’s blows. As soon as the enemy realized Kiba was in possession of the Earth scroll, they worked together to steal it from him before fleeing. Burami blasted Team Kurenai’s attempts to stop them with a foul-smelling cloud, dulling the sense of smell of Kiba and Akamaru. Shino planted one of his female insects on the enemy to track while it evaded Hinata’s Byakugan range. Akamaru and his colleagues were sucked into a quicksand pit while following the enemy. However, Akamaru was able to utilize his Dynamic Marking to make the sand sufficiently firm so that the squad could flee. Team Kurenai resumed their pursuit of the enemy after recuperating.
When following the scent, Akamaru and Kiba quickly discovered that it had increased and was dispersed all over the place. When Shino’s bugs were unable to locate the opponents themselves and advised seeking out additional enemy scrolls, Kiba, finding himself once more thinking about Naruto to his irritation, became motivated to succeed. Akamaru and Kiba used Burami’s smell to locate the true foe after realizing it was coming from his clothes from their prior altercation. The enemies ambushed Team Kurenai as they were once more on the trail.
The squad was initially overpowered, but they were able to escape the situation by using Shino’s insect clones, giving them time to regroup. Team Kurenai rapidly applied pressure to the Kusa-nin after spotting the enemy’s strategy, and Kiba and Akamaru then killed them with his Three-Headed Wolf technique to provide Team Kurenai with a Heaven and Earth scroll. A severe sandstorm struck Team Kurenai afterward. The team was ultimately saved by the Suna-nin proctors, who took them to a building where they could wait out the storm before continuing the examinations.
After Naruto’s return to Konoha, Akamaru was briefly shown when the former was searching for a teammate before heading for the Tenchi Bridge Reconnaissance mission.
After a period of time, Akamaru was infected with a toxin that made him go wild. The decision was made to have him arrested after he attacked some Anbu members who were participating in a training exercise. Kiba snuck him out of the town and fled after learning that Akamaru might need to be put to sleep, but Akamaru persisted in losing control of himself as Hana tried to treat him. When Naruto and Hana caught up with Kiba, Akamaru had transformed into a huge version of himself and attacked anyone around him. Kiba apologized to Akamaru when Naruto and Hana failed to pin down Akamaru and administer the antidote, and suddenly Akamaru leaped at Kiba. Despite being seriously hurt, Kiba was able to ingest the antidote into Akamaru and observed that the latter made every effort to avoid killing him.
Team Kurenai was assigned to work alongside Kakashi because of their tracking abilities when he was given the task of looking into Orochimaru’s most recent whereabouts. When they finally located Orochimaru’s hiding place, they set off a trap that completely obliterated the facility. Thankfully, Akamaru’s nose managed to escape just in time. Later, a high-frequency sound started to make Akamaru have difficulties focusing. The crew realized they were being watched by bats as a result of this. Akamaru persuaded Kiba to use their animal-like taijutsu to clear the fog when the enemy surprised them and covered their sense of smell with smokescreens. The crew soon discovered that Guren was attacking them. There, Akamaru and Kiba once more cooperated to repel her assaults. Akamaru rescued Kiba by burying them in a pit after recognizing their enemy’s new, overpowering might.
Akamaru, Kiba, Sai and Lee chose to go with Sakura when she decided to tell Naruto that Konoha 11 had decided to kill Sasuke for his crimes, in order to stop him from getting any worse and causing the village to be dragged into a catastrophic world war. After Sakura rejected Naruto’s claim that she knew the truth, they turned back in search of Sasuke and went for the Land of Iron. Sakura was able to put all the others, including Akamaru, to sleep with a potent sleeping gas bomb.
Kakashi later finds them sleeping in the middle of the path, and moves them to the side before leaving for the bridge where Sasuke and Sakura are. Akamaru wakes up from being smoke bombed by Sakura and returns to Konoha.
He later accompanies Kiba as the Konoha 11 speak about what they would do about the looming threat that Sasuke Uchiha posed to the safety of the villages and the relative peace that they had.
Akamaru and Kiba were deployed to the Fifth Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces. Later, he and a group of shinobi are dispatched to support the Second Division. With their Fang Over Fang Technique, Akamaru and Kiba assaulted the White Zetsu Army clones, tearing them to pieces. Following the destruction of the advancing White Zetsu Army clones, the two later rejoined with Neji, Hinata and Shino, appearing to be worn out.
Akamaru watched as Kiba pleaded with a weary Neji to visit the hospital compound for treatment. Neji responded to Akamaru rather than Kiba as Kiba lectured him for overusing his Byakugan excessively, confirming how strained his eyes were. Akamaru then carried Neji on his back as the group relocated.
The White Zetsu Army clones that had infiltrated their ranks the previous day were fought against by Akamaru and Kiba. The Sound Four Ninja were summoned to the battlefield, which made the battle personal. Sakon and Ukon once more confronted Kiba and Akamaru. Initially, Akamaru and Kiba had the upper hand but eventually they were engulfed in a strange technique.
While Akamaru’s soul was transported to a new location and revived inside a substantial barrier, his body was left in a vegetative state. Inside the barrier, the inhabitants were able to fight normally. The Sound Four warn their adversaries that the slowed chakra flow in their physical bodies will eventually lead to their demise, in addition, killing the Sound Four will not reverse the technique. Eventually, Naruto senses the Sound Fours’ dense chakra and breaks through the barrier, saving his fellow Konoha-nin.
Akamaru and Kiba later arrived on the battlefield and stood with the others to face their opponents before departing with the other members of the Allied Shinobi Forces to the location of the jinchūriki. Akamaru and Kiba were buffered by the fully matured Ten-Tails as it emerged from the hole it had been confined in when the Alliance launched its counterattack. Naruto shared some of his beast chakra with Akamaru who afterwards charged towards the Ten Tails and Uchiha. With their combined efforts they were able to separate the Ten Tails and Uchiha.
Later, Akamaru was shocked to see Sasuke on the battlefield and even more so when he declared that he would become Hokage.
Akamaru and Kiba assisted the Shinobi Alliance in battling Tobi after Madara was revived. After some time, Akamaru alerted Kiba about the dōjutsu reflected on the moon. They both fell victim to Madara’s Infinite Tsukuyomi, only to be later rescued after Naruto and Sasuke undid the genjutsu.
Akamaru joined Kiba to attend the Memorial Service for the fallen people of the Fourth Shinobi World War.
Akamaru assisted Kiba in finding the perfect present for Naruto and Hinata’s wedding. They were later spotted in the wedding with Kurenai and Shino discussing the honey wine they retrieved as a gift for the wedding couple.
Two years later, while taking a stroll with Kiba, Akamaru started noticing that Kiba’s friends had started dating and settling down, which he found annoying. He believed that Kiba was the only real shinobi who deserves to become the Seventh Hokage. He began to worry about Kiba after hearing from many young women that they were certain about Naruto becoming the Seventh.
Later, when Kiba left on his own, Akamaru followed him after realizing Kiba was being dishonest. Akamaru grew irritated when he discovered Kiba meeting a woman in private and even acknowledged that if Kiba was so interested in women, he probably lacked the abilities to succeed as Hokage. He reconsiders, nevertheless, after realizing that Kiba had unexpectedly met a young veterinarian to receive his immunizations.
However, when Akamaru saw Kiba and Tanaji had a strong affinity to one another, he got overprotective and tried to protect Kiba by yanking him away from Tamaki.
A decade later, a grown-up Akamaru dozed while Kiba spoke with Tamaki about biding his time until he became Hokage, while a young pup and a few cats played around them.
On the day that an interactive doll with a Kurama motif debuted as a popular new toy, Akamaru and Akemaru joined Kiba in trying to buy one for his fiancée. They quickly ran into Naruto and Himawari, who were overjoyed to see the dogs. Kiba assisted Naruto in finding a doll as the latter was unable to find one for himself. When Kiba finally located one and gave it to Akamaru, the canine chose to exchange it for a burger from a guy on the grounds since Kiba had forgotten to feed him that day.
One day, Akamaru joined Kiba and Tamaki on a date to the Quarrel Festival.
Akamaru has been characterized as enthusiastic and engaged. This is evident from the way he interacts with people, notably Kiba, his closest friend and companion ever since the two first met. They spend their time running through trees with one another while out on walks. Most frequently, Akamaru’s devotion can be witnessed when Kiba suffers a combat injury as he rushes to his side.
By explaining things incorrectly and then promptly correcting himself, Akamaru demonstrates a comical thought process. He views humans very scientifically, believing that they reach estrous too late in life when they should be concentrating on becoming shinobi rather than looking for a “partner”. It is also made clear that Akamaru is overly protective of Kiba because he tried vainly to sway his master away from Tamaki as soon as he realized the two were attracted to one another. Akamaru didn’t want Kiba to forgo his training in favor of romancing Tamaki like “the others”.
Akamaru was a tiny puppy that resembled the Great Pyrenees and had white fur. He was frequently carried on Kiba’s head or tucked under his jacket. He has a brown nose, brown patches on his ears, a brown contour around his mouth, and his eyes are typically slanted, giving the appearance that they are closed. His head’s top fur has been cut in a way that resembles a mohawk.
Since his fur turns red and he becomes more ferocious when he consumes army pills, the name Akamaru was given to him. “Aka” means “red”, and “maru” is a traditional Japanese suffix for male names.
Akamaru developed into a large-breed adult dog of mature size. Given his stature, Kiba can now ride easily on Akamaru’s back. Despite this, Kiba maintained that he was unaware of his growth because of how frequently they are together. His overall appearance has not changed, other than his size. After the Fourth Great Shinobi War, Akamaru aged a little bit, developing a few wrinkles on his snout but remaining otherwise unaltered.
Together with Kiba’s ability to converse with him, Akamaru’s enhanced senses of smell and hearing make him a very effective ally for acquiring and exchanging information. He can determine the strength of an enemy by using his nose to feel chakra.
Using the Beast Human Clone skill, Akamaru frequently assumes Kiba’s appearance during combat, but with a considerably more ferocious visage. This enables him to unleash a vicious spinning assault with the Passing Fang, which he can combine with his partner to make it harder for the enemy to dodge. The pair can also combine as a massive, two-headed wolf to unleash a particularly destructive strike. It is challenging for them to see their target due to the attack’s extreme speed. Instead, Akamaru would mark the target by urinating on them beforehand, relying on their enhanced sense of smell.
He has also been shown to be adept at setting traps, such as explosive tags on his own. Akamaru has not been known to talk like some other ninken, but did speak briefly at the end of a special New Years episode in the anime.
