Genno and his son used to go on scavenger hunts together all the time although Genno's son lost his life while protecting his hometown, Kagero Village, thirty years before the series' first episode. His father, Genno, had cautioned him about following in his footsteps and becoming a ninja.
In light of this, Genno blamed himself for his son's death and decided to take revenge on Konoagakure, also known as the Village Hidden in the Leaves, for their role in it. While he did place explosive tags all throughout Konoha, Genno never set them off because his village had been destroyed.
Thirty years later, Genno returns to Konoha to end what he had started and detonate the explosive tags he had installed all these years ago. However, before he could do so, he ran into Naruto Uzumaki, who reminded him of his dead son. Genno let go of his vengeance and aborted his plan to destroy Konoha. Instead, he used all the explosive tags for one last big scavenger hunt.
