Life of Kankuro

Kankuro has been a motivated and skillful kid since the very young age. He was the 2nd children of Kurara who was the wife of Fourth Kazekage. He and his sister Temari were incompatible with the One-Tail even though it was typical for close family members of a Kage to be jinchuriki.

When Shukaku rampaged through Sunagakure in the anime, a young Kankuro gave the residents the order to flee. Kankuro said that his younger brother was a "monster" when his father entered the room. Later, he faced Gaara and questioned him about whether or not he felt regret for killing his group mates.

Gaara then threatened to kill him, which caused him to stop. Kankuro once begged Chiyo to train him, but she refused since she was no longer concerned about the village's future.

Kankuro in Chunin Exam

Kankuro's debut in the anime was just before the Chunin exam when he and Temari met with Sakura, Naruto, and Konohamaru’s Gang. Kankuro got furious when Konohamaru, by mistake, bumped into him and then Kankuro picked him in the air and threw him.

Naruto tried to engage in a fight but Kankuro used his Puppet Thread to disbalance Naruto's feet and made him fall to the ground. As soon as Kankuro and Temari were ready to fight, Sasuke threw a rock at Kankuro's hand but then Gaara appeared and said to stop fighting.

When Kankuro excuses himself to use the restroom during the written exam, designed to test the candidate's capacity to acquire information discreetly, he discloses that one of the proctors was his puppet Karasu in disguise.

Kankuro returned to class shortly before the last section of the exam began after finding the answers. He gave Temari the answers as he returned to his seat. Ibiki Morino, the examiner, had expressed his hope that Kankuro's "doll-playing" had been helpful. Kankuro is astonished to learn that the examiner had discovered his scheme.

Kankuro, in the second phase of the exam, was scared not by his opponents but by his own brother as Gaara was getting thirsty for blood and then killed the Amegakure team with his Sand Coffin technique.

Kankuro was disgusted by Gaara and said that just listen to him for once as an older brother, but then Gaara said that he didn’t consider him a brother and asked him to go straight to the next round after getting scroll.

Third Phase of the Chunin Exam

Kankuro was matched with Misumi Tsurugi in the first games. Misumi rapidly surrounded Kankuro's body and shouted at him to give up, or he would break his neck.

When Kankuro objected, Misumi seemed to kill him to carry out his threat. Before the battle could be declared in Misumi's favor, it was discovered that the Kankuro she assaulted was actually Karasu, who was hiding in Kankuro's place.

Before Misumi could give up, Kankuro forced Karasu to forcibly seize hold of him and restrain him while fracturing his bones. Although Misumi lived, she was unable to fight.

Kankuro Fights Shino Aburame

Kankuro was part of the Konoha invasion plan. As the plan was delayed, Kankuro forfeited his match against Shino because he did not want to show his ability with the puppets to people.

He and Temari led an injured Gaara out of the village while the invasion took place. Kankuro stayed behind to buy them some time once they realized they were being followed. Sasuke was following them. Still, when Kankuro was about to engage him, Shino appeared and wanted to fight Kankuro because he forfeited the match.

Kankuro ordered Karasu to strike immediately but Shino dodged the blows and secretly infected Kankuro. Then Kankuro attacked Shino with a poison smoke bomb. Despite inhaling part of the lethal gas, Shino managed to flee and use his bugs to capture and hold Karasu.

He attempted to fire the last strike before losing all control of Karasu but found that Shino's bugs had located him and used all of his chakras after being directed by the bug Shino had planted on him.

Shino could not kill Kankuro due to the toxic gas he ingested, which caused him to pass out. Kankuro is now immobile and Temari eventually tracked him down, and the two of them assisted Gaara in returning to Sunagakure.

Kankuro Hidden Leaf Ally

After the Gaara and Naruto fight, Gaara knew all about friends and love. The sand decided to be Hidden Leaf’s ally which is why they agreed to assist during Sasuke Recovery Mission. Kiba Inuzuka and his dog Akamaru were rescued by Kankuro from Sakon and Ukon.

Kankuro utilized his puppet Karasu to shield Kiba and Akamaru from Ukon's kunai strike, stopping Ukon from killing them. When Kiba inquires about the whereabouts of the others he smelled, Kankuro replies that they helped his other friends since they were also in need. After engaging Ukon, Kankuro is eventually caught by Sakon, who returned when Ukon didn't.

Kankuro revealed that Sakon had taken Kuroari, his new puppet, while attempting to fuse with Kankuro's body using his Parasite Demon Demolition Technique. Kankuro stabbed Sakon with multiple blades as it emerged from a sack on its back.

Then, using his brand-new Black Secret Technique Machine One Shot, Kankuro impaled Ukon and Sakon with several blades from Karasu's arms and legs, killing them instantly.

Kankuro Fight Sasori

When Gaara became the Kazekage in Naruto Shippuden, he was attacked by Deidara and Sasori, who were the Akatsuki members who were capturing the Tailed Beasts. As Gaara was a One-Tailed Beast Jinchuriki, they captured him.

Kankuro tries to save his brother but comes up against Sasori, the legendary Puppet Master, who went missing long ago from Sand Village. However, he later got to know that he is with Akatsuki, whom Kankuro looks up to.

Kankuro saved fellow Medical Nin, who was gone to rescue Gaara, and told them to back off as he fought one on one with Sasori. However, in the end, he got defeated and was poisoned by a Sasori puppet. Sasori left him dying with the poison in his body, but Team 7 was able to Aid him as Sakura took out his Poison, and he was able to survive.

He then went to the council meeting and attempted to assault one of the council members for saying the town would be better off without Gaara, but Baki stopped him. A picture of him and his brothers fell and fractured as he was in his bedroom, an omen portending Gaara's demise.

He was then seen again as once Temari admitted that his strategy had failed, Kankuro went off with him to find Team 7, which had been his goal all along. He was the one who told Naruto about the puppet core and the method Chiyo used to resuscitate Gaara after Gaara was discovered and brought back to life.

Kankuro fight Sasuke at Five Kage Summit

Gaara was picked to be escorted to the Kage Summit by Kankuro and Temari. When Kankuro finally came, he apologized for being late and excused himself by saying that Gaara doesn't require bodyguards.

Sasuke Uchiha was close, as indicated by White Zetsu, and soon after the Raikage left to face Sasuke, the siblings also departed to fight with him. When Sasuke's Amaterasu burned some samurai, Kankuro and Temari assisted them by removing their armor.

He was then assaulted by the Sand Siblings, Darui, and Kankuro with Sasori and his Red Secret Technique Machinery Triangles maneuver. The Raikage's entourage and the siblings pursued Sasuke back to the Summit hall after he managed to escape their attack.

Fourth Shinobi World War

The Allied Shinobi Forces' Surprise Attack Division is put under Kankuro's command. Sai approached Kankuro after he declared his position to the squad and began to consider what moniker to give his captain, which perplexed Kankuro.

Inquiring about Kankuro's age while they were traveling to their destination, Omoi, who was worrying about the worst-case scenario, asked. Kankuro advised Omoi to concentrate on his goals to safeguard his loved ones.

While the rest of the division followed Kankuro's orders to bolster their position, Kankuro and Kiri discussed the division's tactics before moving behind enemy lines to set up an ambush.

Soon after, Muta Aburame arrived at their base. Before Hoheto Hyuga disclosed that a resurrected Deidara booby-trapped Muta, Zaji impulsively approached him to aid his colleague. Before Muta burst, Kankuro acted swiftly and grabbed Zaji to safety.

They are then attacked by more former allies-turned-enemies, Ranka and Tokuma Hyuga, which Kankur recognized as the work of a reincarnated Sasori without time to recover. Deidara was attacked by Kankuro and leaping into combat, when Omoi broke Sasori's puppet strings tied to Ranka and Tokuma, Kankuro attached his threads to Sasori's dangling ones to drag Sasori down.

He ordered Ittan to elevate the earth at the same time, sending Deidara and Sasori smashing into one another. Sasori lauded Kankuro's enhanced skills, to which Kankuro replied that Sasori's Red Secret Technique had long ago been eclipsed by his Black Secret Technique.

Kankuro remarked that it was fated that they would battle again and that he owed him from their last meeting where Sasori poisoned him and left him for dead. Sasori is shocked to see his old body as Kankuro pulls out his new Sasori puppet from a scroll.

Deidara ordered Shin to detonate but Kankuro managed to imprison Shin in his Sanshouo puppet, suppressing the blast and protecting Omoi with the Sasori puppet's Mechanical Light Shield Block.

Deidara and Sasori were subsequently pushed out of the air by an infuriated Sai, so Kankuro called out two Kuroari puppets to catch them. He then used his Black Secret Technique, the Machine Triple Shot, to impale Sasori with Karasu and bind Deidara with the wire from the puppet's Sasori.

Kankuro told Sasori that his failure came from his attempts to become eternal while, in reality, he had already achieved immortality thanks to the puppets he had made. Sasori's soul was moved by his words, and it started to leave. As he crumbled, he gave Kankuro control of his Mother and Father puppets, promising that when he passed away, he would, in turn, give them to the following generation of puppeteers.

Hanzo, Kimimaro, and Chiyo subsequently approach the Surprise Attack Division with a restrained Deidara in tow after Chiyo complimented Kankuro on his triumph over Sasori. Knowing they were outnumbered, Kankur ordered a retreat. Ibuse's Poison Mist pursued them and paralyzed them but before Hanzo could kill them, Mifune showed up and stopped his attack.

Kankuro and the others are then brought to the medical facility for treatment. During the first day's first night, Kankuro and the samurai were sleeping. Soon later, Deidara and Zetsu managed to escape from Kuroari. Kankuro pursues a freed Deidara and traps him in a trap with the aid of Mifune, his samurai, and Kurotsuchi. Mifune uses a battery's power to stop his explosion before thrusting his blade into Deidara, allowing Kankuro to retake Deidara in the Kuroari.

Later, he assists Mifune and assumes control of his battle with Chiyo, a reincarnated warrior, employing the Sasori, Mother, and Father puppets to defeat her. When Chiyo finds out that Kankuro also possesses the Mother and Father puppets in addition to the Sasori puppet, her regret at not being able to save Sasori is revealed.

She is informed by Kankuro that Sasori trusted him with the care of his puppets and that this arrangement should be maintained for puppet users in the future. Kankuro was present when one of Naruto's clones arrived just in time to save him and the Fifth Division. After admitting that the puppets are in excellent hands, Chiyo recalls some pleasant memories of her grandson.

After Itachi released the Reanimation, Kankuro gets there in time to see the action. Even though he is sorry to see the elderly puppeteer go once more, Chiyo recognizes the younger Suna-talent nin in the same field and gladly gives Kankuro the responsibility of continuing puppetry ninjutsu.

After War ended, Kankuro was recognized as the greatest Puppet Master and amongst the finest Shinobi in the world.

Kankuro in Boruto: The Next Generation,

The subject of Kaguya Otsutsuki, was discussed during a Five Kage Summit that Kankuro accompanied Gaara to in Konoha. A Kage Summit was held in Konoha fifteen years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, and Kankuro accompanied Gaara there.

Before the summit, the two paid visits to Temari and Shikadai as Timari married Shikamaru, settled in Hidden Leaf Village, and had a Son, Shikadai.

Kankuro Fight Urashiki Otsutsuki Puppets

Kankur accompanied Araya and Yodo to support their pals as they fought Urashiki Otsutsuki with Gaara and Sasuke Uchiha. When Sasuke first arrived, Urashiki warped him to a separate realm, but Gaara was able to temporarily shut the enemy away with the help of Shukaku's timely arrival.

Following that, it was determined that Yodo and Araya would accompany Gaara back to Suna so he could attend to his wounds. In contrast, Kankuro would accompany Shinki and Boruto to Konoha to protect Shukaku. Shukaku deliberately allowed itself to be locked in a jar to suppress its chakra.

Four of Urashiki's puppets discovered them and began to play with them. Kankuro decided to fight the puppets alone as Boruto and Shinki advanced with the tailed beast because he wanted to give his team some time to escape and thought it would be a fun challenge.

Despite the Suna-prowess nin’s using his puppets to hold back Urashiki's advances, Urashiki eventually managed to overwhelm Kankuro's attempts. This forced Kankuro to undertake a last-ditch effort to blow up his puppets, which killed three of Urashiki's puppets while the final one continued. Kankuro almost avoided dying in the explosion by encasing himself in one of his puppets. Suna-nin later discovered him and returned him to the community for medical attention.

Kankuro’s Personality

He is kind Shinobi, as even during the Chunin exam and Konoha invasion, as he doesn’t want to kill anyone and even stops Gaara from killing anyone.

Kankuro used to hate Gaara from when they were kids as he killed his groupmates and did not feel anything. Still, after Naruto made Gaara understand that family and friends are key to being great, Kankuro and Gaara's relationship improved.

He is also someone who does not like like kids as he find them irritating, and that was shown during Konohamaru bumping into him. Kankuro is a passionate and hardworking guy who always fixes his Puppets and hone his skills.

Because of his hard work and skill, he was praised by Sasori and Grany Chiyo, who were the legendary puppet masters. Overall he is a great guy who stands up to his family and village and is determined.

Kankuro’s Appearance

Kankuro in Naruto

Kankuro was dressed in a black, baggy, full-body outfit with a red and yellow circle on the front, typical of a Bunraku puppeteer. Additionally, he wore a black cowl that fully hid his head and had cat-like ears and forehead protection, and he painted his face purple color mostly.

Kankuro in Naruto Shippuden

Kankuro modified his face paint once again. He is also sporting a brand-new puppet and is dressed in a black ensemble with a long shirt, pants, and a red belt around the waist.

He resembles his father a lot when he doesn’t wear a mask or a headpiece. Later, when he is rediscovered, his hood transforms and he dons a kimono-style outfit. His puppets are still on his back, but they are now contained in scrolls.

In a new style of face paint, a line runs from the top of the upper lip to the bottom of the chin, and another line runs from one cheek to the lips and ends on the other cheek.

Kankuro in Fourth Shinobi World War

Kankuro dons the typical Sunagakure ninja garb during the start of the Fourth Shinobi World War, along with his hood which now bears the emblem of the Allies Shinobi Forces sewn onto it. Despite having larger lines and no line above his nose, he bears the same facial painting as Sasuke from the Sasuke Recovery Mission.

Kankuro’s Abilities

He is one of the best Shinobi of Hidden in Sand Village and in the new era, he is the best Puppet user in the Shinobi world, and everyone does recognize him.

Kankuro Puppet Techniques

When he was first revealed, Kankuro could only control one puppet at once. However, he would develop his puppeteering abilities over the years and eventually became a puppet master who was able to control many puppets at once.

Sasori praised him for his skill in using his chakra threads to attach to the threads of adversaries or other puppeteers. He has learned how to covertly attach chakra threads to his target's body and use them to interrupt their chakra flow, making it difficult for them to employ techniques and inflicting severe agony. He has done this after studying the chakra route system in later life.

Kankuro’s Black Secret Technique

He created his Puppet Technique just like Grany ChiyoWhite Secret Technique and Sasori Red Secret Technique.

Kankuro had many different Sub-techniques of the Black Secret Technique, which have different abilities like:

  1. Black Secret Technique: Black Iron
  2. Black Secret Technique Flame Filling Flower
  3. Black Secret Technique Machine One Shot
  4. Black Secret Technique Machine Two Shot
  5. Black Secret Technique — Machine Triple Shot
  6. Black Secret Technique Manipulated Flame Scorpion Play
  7. Black Secret Technique Revolving Flame Arson
  8. Black Secret Technique: Salamander
  9. Black Secret Technique: Three Great Tragedies.

The four puppets shown were made first by Sasori (the fourth was Sasori himself), and they ended up in Kankuro's care after Sasori fled Suna. At the outset of Part II, Sasori destroys his first three puppets. He had his puppets destroyed before using Sasori's body as a puppet when he passed away.

He appears with the previously damaged puppets that have been restored and a clone of the Kuroari during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Later in life, he created more versions of his distinctive puppets and started using them. As a final option, he might even cause a massive explosion to cause his puppets to self-destruct.

As seen by his most recent puppet, Sasori, which he acquired after Sasori passed away and modified significantly to include his own Black Secret Technique style, Kankuro's puppeteering abilities are also quite versatile.

He is skilled in natural transformation, as seen by his proficiency with Earth, Water, Lightning, and Wind Release. Kankuro claimed to have some poison resistance in the anime, but it wasn't enough to protect him from Ibuse's Poison Mist.

Kankuro in Movies

Naruto the Movie: Legend of the Stone of Gelel

The film opens with Kankuro and a nighttime battle between Sunagakure ninja and soldiers wearing hefty sets of armor on a barren seashore beach. Despite their best attempts, the Suna ninja is gradually overpowered by the overwhelming power of their enigmatic adversaries.

A suit of armor is slashed apart by Kankuro with his puppet. At the same time, Gaara kills a great number of foes with his characteristic Sand Waterfall Imperial Funeral as soon as reinforcements, commanded by Kankuro and Gaara, arrive just in time to reverse the tide.

They disregarded Kankuro's warnings to cease since doing so would start another conflict. Gaara was instructed to beam a flare at the retreated adversaries by Kankuro because it was too dark to see.

However, when Gaara gave the command, a gigantic battleship with its own arsenal of weaponry was exposed, surprising Kankuro and the other Suna ninja. Later, among all the debris, Naruto finds Kankuro in a chamber with comatose kids. After detailing how the ship had been destroying Land of Wind settlements, Kankuro launches an attack on Temujin.

They are stopped by the Kamira and Ranke, who Kankuro and Gaara take on before they engage in combat. Kamira employs what appears to be genjutsu, a technique for mind control.

Kamira plays with Shikamaru while she is flying around, but he is unable to lock onto her shadow. Shikamaru barricades the area with lines of explosives (most of them phony) so Kamira can't fly about when he unexpectedly finds Kankur on the opposite side of the ruins.

Kamira thinks she understands what Kankuro has in mind until he suddenly launches one of his puppets to murder and capture her. After Shikamaru, Sakura, and Kankuro successfully remove the kids from the machines, the ruins begin to collapse.

Shikamaru, Sakura, Kankuro, and Gaara can only observe as everything in the void's path starts to be consumed, and everything is quiet.

Naruto Shippūden the Movie: The Will of Fire

When a disagreement arose between Konohagakure, he emerged alongside other Suna-nin to confront the Konoha-nin, but it was resolved on Jiraiya's account.

Trivia

  1. In the seventh and most current Naruto character popularity survey, Kankuro was rated as the 27th most popular character. The sixth poll has him in at number 19.
  2. Whenever Kankuro appears in a new manga arc, he wears brand-new purple face paint. This might be a tribute to Kabuki theater, which frequently employs face paint. Each color has a specific meaning in the art of applying makeup, with purple standing for majesty and loftiness.
  3. In addition to his Kabuki-like makeup, Kankur's use of puppets and his all-black attire might be a reference to Bunraku, a traditional Japanese puppet theater. His entire persona appears to make references to stage performances. Kanjuro Kiritake III is one of the most well-known artists working in bunraku.

Quotes

  1. (To Sasori) "Sasori… your strength came because of your soul, not despite it. You tried to erase it, to become a puppet yourself, but couldn't change completely. Now you've got your immortal body, but you've fallen, sunk to the level of the puppets you used to control. You were supposed to be a top-class ninja puppeteer, not a worthless nobody who lets someone else pull the strings.

  1. (To Gaara about Sasuke) "Gaara… don't bother… if he could be convinced, Naruto would not have failed. He is a criminal now, a member of Akatsuki… he's not like you."

  1. (To Sasori) "When a puppeteer lets someone else control him, it's all over! I won't lose to you… or to the one controlling you. If I'm going to control Sasori, I might as well control the real thing! …Your techniques… and the puppets you created will never rot. As long as there's a successor who will take up the spirit inhabiting them!"

Did you know?

After the Kazekage Rescue Mission arc, Kankuro’s voice actor is replaced by the man who also voices Asuma, Doug Erholtz, who also does a fantastic job.
