Hagoromo created Matatabi and the other tailed beasts. He split the energy of a powerful Ten-Tail into Nine-Tailed Beasts, and Matatabi is one of those Tailed Beasts. Hagoromo told the tailed beasts that they were connected and would be reunited one day. In the anime, Hagoromo sent Matatabi to a temple which is built in a canebrake region, and many people believed that Matatabi liked Shukaku, who was once a human who turned into a living ghost.

During the First Shinobi World War, Hashirama Senju captured eight-tailed beasts. To establish friendly relations and maintain a balance of power among the newly formed ninja villages, he sold two of these tailed beasts, Matatabi and Gyuki, to the village of Kumogakure during a gathering of the Five Kage.

Decades later, Matatabi ended up sealed inside Yugito Nii and later trained in a cave where she learned to control the tailed beast. At some point in time, Nekobaa gathers Matatabi paw prints in the Paw Encyclopaedia.
