Shukaku’s Background

Hagoromo created Shukaku and the other tailed beasts. He split the energy of a powerful Ten-Tail into Nine Tailed Beasts, and Shukaku is one of those Tailed Beasts. Hagoromo told the tailed beasts that they were connected and would be reunited one day. Before Hagoromo died, he sent Shukaku to live in a temple located in the desert.

Shukaku's Beginnings

Long ago, Shukaku was sent by Hagoromo Otsutsuki to live in a temple in a desert area that would later become part of the Land of Wind. This temple was built to protect Shukaku.

Capture by Sunagakure

Before the First Shinobi World War, some followers of the temple captured Shukaku and brought it to Sunagakure, the Hidden Sand Village. The First Kazekage, a leader of the village, wanted to use Shukaku to make his village rich instead of seeking another tailed beast.

Shukaku's First Jinchuriki - Bunpuku

Shukaku's first host, a Suna priest named Bunpuku, was locked in a dungeon with him and was always guarded. People in Sunagakure started to believe that Shukaku was a ghost trapped in a teapot because of the tales surrounding it. However, Bunpuku didn't hold any grudges against him or the villagers.

He considered him his equal and was happy as long as the tanuki remembered his name. Shukaku grew to appreciate Bunpuku's kindness and remembered his words about the importance of the heart and acceptance. Shukaku had other hosts as well, but they lost their lives when Shukaku was removed from them.

Gaara becomes Shukaku's second Jinchuriki

When Gaara's mother, Karura, was pregnant with him, the Fourth Kazekage, Gaara's father sealed Shukaku inside Gaara while he was still in the womb. This was because Gaara was the only one compatible with Shukaku. Before Karura passed away after giving birth, she told Gaara that she would protect him, and her love for him became a part of Gaara's sand-based automatic defense.

However, Gaara struggled to control Shukaku's powers. He accidentally harmed Suna's ninja and villagers. Shukaku didn't like humans and warned Gaara not to sleep too much, or it might take control. Gaara's father tested him by ordering someone to hurt Gaara and lie about his mother not loving him. This test caused Gaara to lose control of Shukaku, leading to a rampage. His father used a special Gold Dust to stop Shukaku.

Chunin Exams and Konoha Crush

During the Chūnin Exams, in a fight with Sasuke, Gaara partially turned into Shukaku, revealing his frightening power. This transformation scared Sasuke.

Later, in a major event called the Konoha Crush, Gaara fully transformed into Shukaku while battling Naruto Uzumaki. In a desperate move, Naruto summoned Gamabunta, a gigantic toad, to help him deal with Shukaku's might.

When Gaara climbed on top of Shukaku's head and used a technique to pretend to sleep, Shukaku took control of his body and started attacking Naruto and Gamabunta.

Shukaku's strength proved too much for Gamabunta to handle, so they both transformed into a massive fox-like creature. Gamabunta tried to hold Shukaku back, giving Naruto a chance to wake Gaara up. This action stopped Shukaku's destructive rampage.

Sunagakure Support Mission

In the anime, there was an incident where Gaara's student, Matsuri, was kidnapped by a group known as the Four Celestial Symbols Men. They had a sinister plan to steal Shukaku's chakra, the powerful energy inside Gaara.

To rescue Matsuri and confront the kidnappers, Gaara partially transformed into Shukaku, using its abilities to defeat a resurrected enemy named Seimei.

Shukaku's Extraction

A few years after the Chūnin Exams and Konoha Crush, there was an examination between the Hidden Leaf Village (Konoha) and Gaara's Hidden Sand Village (Suna). During this event, an enemy named Hōichi attempted to forcefully take Shukaku's chakra from Gaara using special jutsu.

However, Neji Hyūga, a skilled ninja from Konoha, intervened. Neji used his unique Gentle Fist technique to block the chakra extraction, preventing Shukaku from being taken.

Kazekage Rescue Mission

At this point, Gaara had become the Fifth Kazekage, a prestigious position in Suna. The Akatsuki, a dangerous group, sent two of its members, Deidara and Sasori, to capture Shukaku. During their intense battle, Gaara harnessed Shukaku's powers by manifesting its arms multiple times to attack Deidara.

However, Deidara ultimately defeated Gaara and took him to the Akatsuki's hideout. There, Shukaku was forcibly extracted from Gaara, which should have been fatal. However, an experienced ninja named Chiyo used a powerful technique to revive Gaara, who miraculously retained his sand-controlling abilities.

Birth of the Ten-Tails' Jinchuriki

During a critical moment in the series, a powerful antagonist named Obito Uchiha aims to capture all the tailed beasts, including Shukaku, to further his sinister plans. When Naruto, the main character, attempted to extract the tailed beasts from Obito's body to thwart his scheme, something unusual happened.

Shukaku's chakra refused to cooperate with Naruto. Instead, Gaara, who had a connection with Shukaku, stepped in and helped extract the tailed beast's chakra. This freed Shukaku and the other tailed beasts from Obito's control.

Tailed Beasts vs. Madara

Shukaku and Gaara teamed up with their newfound freedom to confront Madara Uchiha, a formidable adversary. They combined their sand-manipulating abilities to restrain Madara. Naruto, who possessed extraordinary powers at this point, also joined the battle. Together, they managed to temporarily overpower Madara. However, he escaped their grasp and sealed them back into a statue.

Tailed Beast Reunion

Obito sealed part of Shukaku's chakra into Naruto to save his life. Inside Naruto's mind, Shukaku and the other tailed beasts met Hagoromo Otsutsuki, the Sage of the Six Paths. They offered their support to Naruto, and Shukaku even shared some of its chakras to boost Naruto's power during battles.

Kaguya Otsutsuki

After Madara's evil plans were foiled by Black Zetsu, who turned out to be a secret puppet master manipulating shinobi history, Black Zetsu used Madara's body to bring back Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, the original creator of the shinobi world. Kaguya was a tyrannical and immensely powerful figure.

In the battle against Kaguya, Shukaku and the other tailed beasts continued to support Naruto by lending him their collective power. They helped Naruto try to defeat Kaguya. Eventually, Naruto and his friend Sasuke managed to overcome Kaguya's might by using a special technique called the Six Paths — Chibaku Tensei. This technique created a huge floating sphere that trapped Kaguya and separated her from the tailed beasts.

Kaguya was sealed away inside a newly-created moon within her own dimension, which was a way to keep her from causing harm to the world.

After this intense battle, the spirits of Hagoromo, the sage who originally sealed the tailed beasts, and some past leaders of the shinobi villages summoned the tailed beasts and Team 7 back to the real world. The tailed beasts, who were finally free from Kaguya's control, began discussing their plans for the future.

However, Sasuke had different intentions. He wanted to lead a revolution and eliminate the current shinobi systems. His plan included eliminating anyone who could oppose him, including the current leaders of the villages, known as the Kage and the tailed beasts.

Sasuke quickly subdued the tailed beasts using his powerful Rinnegan and sealed them with a technique called Chibaku Tensei, which created massive spheres to contain them. But Naruto, who had a strong bond with the tailed beasts, reassured them that he would save them again.

After a final battle with Sasuke, Naruto was able to defeat him and change his mind. Together, they ended the Infinite Tsukuyomi, a powerful genjutsu that trapped people in their dreams. Sasuke released Shukaku and the other tailed beasts from their prisons, granting them their freedom once more.

New Era - Versus Momoshiki Arc

In the later part of the series, Shukaku reached out to Gaara and the Kazekage. It had concerns about Gyūki, another tailed beast, and wanted to inform Gaara about it. Shukaku maintained its connection with Naruto.

One-Tail Escort Arc

In the anime, there was a big battle involving Gaara and an enemy named Urashiki Ōtsutsuki. Shukaku came to help him. Together, they managed to trap Urashiki but knew it wouldn't hold him for long. So, they decided to send Shukaku to Konoha under Naruto Uzumaki's protection.

To keep Urashiki from sensing its chakra, Shukaku cleverly sealed itself inside a small teapot. During their journey to safety, they encountered some of Urashiki's dangerous puppets. Kankurō, one of Gaara's allies, decided to face these puppets alone while Boruto, Shinki, and Shukaku continued on their way.

Boruto was surprised by how cold Shinki, another one of Gaara's allies, could be. Shukaku shared that Gaara used to be similar until Naruto's kindness changed him for the better. Then, they heard a huge explosion from the battle. Shinki wanted to keep moving, but Boruto felt it was wrong to leave Kankurō in danger, so he returned to help.

They faced a tricky puppet that could inject poison. Shinki got paralyzed, but Boruto, Shikadai, and Temari saved them. Shukaku found Boruto's actions exciting and believed he was even smarter and more skilled than Naruto at his age. It enjoyed watching the fight but was quickly picked up by Shinki as they continued their journey to Konoha.

When they reached the border of the Land of Fire, they were stopped by Mirai Sarutobi, a shinobi who wanted to know why they were there. Shinki didn't want to talk to her because she wasn't a high-ranking ninja. But Sai Yamanaka, a higher-ranked shinobi, arrived, and Shinki explained the situation. Sai then took Shukaku to Naruto.

At Naruto's office, Shukaku explained the situation to Boruto. Sasuke also appeared and told them he had already rescued Boruto, but Urashiki had escaped. To keep Shukaku safe, they decided to keep it at Naruto's home.

When they visited Boruto's family, Himawari, Naruto's sister, took a liking to the miniaturized Shukaku. She treated it like a talking toy and kept it close. Shukaku was initially annoyed but became intrigued when it learned that Himawari had once knocked out Kurama, another powerful-tailed beast. Shukaku decided to be friendly with her, hoping to find out how she did it and tease Kurama.

However, when Shukaku realized that Himawari didn't know about the incident, it turned cold and told her to leave it alone, making her sad. While Shukaku was napping, its teapot form was mistaken for trash and taken to a scrapyard. Himawari, desperately looking for Shukaku, used her special Byakugan eyes to find and rescue it just in time. Shukaku was amazed at how much Himawari cared for it, and he realized that humans could be quite entertaining.

Later, Naruto decided to move Shukaku to a new safe place. As they left, Shukaku waved goodbye to Boruto and Himawari with its tail.

Kawaki Arc

In the anime, after a significant battle where Kurama sacrificed itself to give the power to defeat Isshiki Osutsukit, Shukaku and the remaining tailed beasts sensed this loss.
