The details of Tessen's past are rather mysterious and very little is known about his upbringing or his skills. In the anime, he only made a few brief appearances.

Tessen made his first appearance in the series in episode 159 of the Naruto Shippuden anime in the Pain’s Assault Arc. In the arc, along with a small group of shinobi (Choji Akimichi, Choza Akimichi, Shito Akimichi, Saisu Kamano, and Kokage Yanagikagi), Tessen assisted Kakashi Hatake in his confrontation with Deva Path (Tendo Pain), the leader of the Six Paths of Pain. He and his allies simultaneously attacked Tendo Pain from four directions, but they were quickly beaten back by Pain’s Shinra Tensei (Almighty Push).

Tessen has not appeared since this incident; thus, his absence makes it impossible to say whether he is dead or alive. He is currently assumed to be alive and well unless any information comes to light indicating otherwise.

He uses a distinctive shuriken launcher, which he stores in a scroll, instantly launching a barrage of shuriken at the opponent.
