What is the Gedo Statue in Naruto?

The Gedo Statue (Gedo Mazo), also known as the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, is essentially the husk of the Ten-Tails.

In the Ancient Era, it was sealed by HagoromoOtsutuski and Hamura Otsutsuki along with their mother, Kaguya Otsutsuki. It remained sealed in the moon of the Naruto World for about a thousand years. It reappeared when Madara Uchiha awakened Rinnegan and summoned it from the moon, breaking its seal. Madara used the Gedo Statue to prolong his life, and it was later used by the Akatsuki for extraction and sealing of the Tailed Beasts, to revive the Ten-Tails.

History and Creation of the Gedo Statue

In the Ancient Era, Kaguya Otsutsuki used the power of the Ten-Tails in her battle against her sons, Hagoromo and Hamura Otsutsuki. Hagoromo and Hamura used Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei, also known as Six Paths: Planetary Devastation to seal Kaguya and the Ten-Tails. Before sealing them, the brothers extracted Ten-Tails chakra and sealed it within Hagoromo, and used the remaining husk as the core of the newly formed moon.

After the incident, Hamura migrated to the moon to remain close to their mother and protect the husk of the Ten-Tails, which later became known as the Gedo Statue. With Ten-Tails’ chakra sealed within him, Hagoromo became the first Ten-Tails Jinchuriki.

Hogoromo later divided the Ten-Tails chakra into nine separate entities with separate consciousnesses and personalities. These entities were huge concentrations of chakra that cannot be killed, as they would appear again after some time. These entities later became known as the Tailed Beasts.

After Madara’s battle with Hashirama Senju, he was presumed dead, but he returned to life by rewriting reality itself with the Uchiha Forbidden Jutsu, Izanagi. In his battle against Hashirama, Madara came into possession of his flesh and later implanted Hashirama’s cells into his body.

With the Senju and Uchiha cells combined, Madara managed to awaken the legendary Dojutsu, the Rinnegan, prior to his death. With Rinnegan’s visual prowess, he summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and siphoned chakra from it to prolong his life. Madara implanted his Rinnegan in Nagato Uzumaki prior to his natural death from old age in hopes to be revived using the Rinne Rebirth Jutsu in the future.

After Yahiko committed suicide by throwing himself on Nagato’s kunai, Nagato was filled with sorrow and rage. He summoned the Gedo Statue to wipe out Hanzo of the Salamander and his men for kidnapping Konan and forcing Yahiko to kill himself.

Later in the series, the Gedo Statue is used by the Akatsuki to extract and capture Tailed Beasts in order to revive the Ten-Tails. The Gedo Statue appeared for the first time in episode 10 of Naruto Shippuden during the extraction of the One-Tailed Beast from its Jinchuriki, Gaara of the Sand.

During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Obito and Madara acquire the chakra of all the Tailed Beasts and revive the Ten-Tails, later becoming its Jinchuriki. After Team 7’s final battle with the revived Kaguya Otsutsuki, Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha use the Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei to seal Kaguya and the husk of the Ten-Tails. After the war, the Gedo Statue is sealed and incapacitated to this day.
