Who has the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan?

Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan is the progression of Mangekyo Sharingan. Mangekyo Sharingan is the natural evolution of the standard Three Tomoe Sharingan which is awakened when the wielder experiences significant trauma, usually the loss of a loved one.

The user of the Mangekyo Sharingan eventually loses light in their eye when they use the visual prowess of the Mangekyo Sharingan. It is believed that when the wielder of this Dojutsu implants the Mangekyo of their kin, believed to be a family member, that is able to awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan.

The Eternal Mangekyo does not cost the light of the user’s eye upon use. The pattern of users' Mangekyo Sharingan changes when they unlock the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.

Madara Uchiha

In the Warring State Period, it is stated that many members of the Uchiha Clan tried to awaken Mangekyo or Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan by killing their brethren or loved ones. The first individual to acquire the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan is believed to be MadaraUchiha.

Izuna Uchiha, Madara’s younger brother, gave his Sharingan to Madara as he was losing his eyesight due to the frequent use of his Mangekyo Sharingan. Izuna entrusted his Sharingan to Madara so that he could protect the Uchiha Clan. When Madara implanted Izuna’s Sharingan, he unlocked the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan which restored his eyesight.

Sasuke Uchiha

The other known wielder of the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan is Sasuke Uchiha. After acquiring the Mangekyo Sharingan, Sasuke is set on a path to avenge his elder brother’s death. In his pursuit, he fought multiple battles in a relatively short period. As a result of the overuse of the Mangekyo Sharingan, his eyesight started to fade. As Sasuke still had to go a long way to avenge his brother and restore his reputation, he implanted Itachi Uchiha’s Sharingan with the help of Tobi, later revealed to be Obito Uchiha.

The Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan is the final form of the Sharingan. It contains all the abilities and visual prowess that were possessed by the user with his Mangekyo Sharingan. Although the abilities are similar to the Mangekyo Sharingan, the potency and destructive prowess of the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan are on a whole different level. Other than enhancement in power, it also restores the user’s eyesight which does not fade away no matter how often it is used.

Currently, Sasuke Uchiha is the only individual who possesses the Eternal Mangekyo Sharingan.
