Who is Kawaki's father?

Kokatsu is Kawaki’s biological father and although he may not look like it, he is a former shinobi who made great contributions to the Fourth Great Ninja War. Believed to be a nice person, Kokatsu turned bitter after facing the horrors of the war and relied on alcohol to drink his sorrows away. At some point, Kokatsu fathered a child named Kawaki with an unknown woman. What happened to Kawaki’s mother is unknown.

Kokatsu was abusive towards Kawaki. One night, he locked Kawaki when he accidentally broke his bottle filled with alcohol. At this point, Jigen arrived at their house and offered to buy Kawaki from him. Without a second thought, Kokutsu accepted the offer and sold Kawaki to him.

Jigen was one of the antagonists in the series and in reality he was a monk from the Ancient Era who was being controlled by Ishiki Otsutsuki after Kaguya Otsutsuki attacked him and left him to die. Just like Kawaki, Jigen bought many children to give them the KarmaSeal and make them a vessel of Ishiki Otsutsuki. Before Kawaki, no one was capable of inheriting the Karma Seal and died (except Code).

When Kawaki inherited the Karma Seal and survived, Jigen put Kawaki through extensive and cruel training to prepare him to be the vessel to resurrect Ishiki. Jigen referred to himself as Kawaki’s father and stated that just wants him to become strong and not disappoint him. Jigen used cruel methods and fear to train and control Kawaki.

After Kawaki was brought to the Village Hidden in the Leaves, Naruto Uzumaki, the Seventh Hokage of the Hidden Leaf, took on the responsibility to look after Kawaki and keep him out of trouble. Naruto welcomed Kawaki into his family and treated him like his own son. Cautious at first, Kawaki later realized that Naruto is not after him and at some point starts looking up to him.

Although it is not official, Naruto and Hinata assumed the role of Kawaki’s adoptive parents. Kawaki had now gained what he always wanted but never had, a family that loved him. It was the first time Kawaki had felt the presence of a real father figure in his life. Kawaki started adoring Naruto and is always willing to sacrifice anything to protect Naruto and his family.

In their final battle against Ishiki, Kawaki revealed his location when he feared that Naruto’s life was in danger and went up against Ishiki.
