Izumi was born in the legendary Uchiha clan. According to her mention in Itachi’s novel, she was the daughter of Hazuki Uchiha. Unfortunately, not much information is known about her father’s lineage or his name. Izumi's father was not an Uchiha, unlike her mother, and as a result, their family was shunned. They spent Izumi's early years living apart from the Uchiha clan.
Her father sacrificed his life defending his beloved daughter during the attack of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox on the Hidden Leaf Village. The death of her father in front of her eyes was too much to handle for young Izumi. It took a toll on the young child and caused great mental and emotional trauma. Izumi eventually awakened her Sharingan from the anguish brought on by her father's passing and the guilt that he would not have died if she had been more powerful. Later, she reconnected with the Uchiha clan with her mother.
Izumi asked Itachi Uchiha to play with her and the other kids when she met him, a few years sooner in the anime than she did in the novel. When he said no, the other kids started picking on him. Only Izumi defended him.
Izumi was separated from her parents on the night of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attack. Itachi protected her from falling debris and then escorted her to a secure location. She thanked him and requested him to let her hold Sasuke, Itachi's younger sibling. Itachi consented under the condition that she would not make Sasuke cry, which she did. Itachi grabbed Sasuke back when he started to cry. Izumi was irritated when Sasuke abruptly stopped sobbing after being given back to Itachi.
A few years later, Izumi enrolled in the Hidden Leaf Ninja Academy. Like many girls of her age, Izumi grew fond of Itachi Uchiha, a student in her class across from hers, and the pride of the Uchiha clan. She made an effort to communicate with him as a result, walking home with him after lessons and defending him against criticism from their classmates. Itachi initially treated Izumi with the same lack of interest he had with everyone else, before learning that she possessed the Sharingan, which he himself had not yet awakened. He soon began gaining interest in her.
Soon afterward, Itachi was allowed to graduate early based on his superior skill set. At some point after that, Izumi ran into Itachi on their way to the Uchiha compound when she asked him about his new life as a full-fledged ninja. She also inquired with Itachi about the secret meeting that the Uchiha clan member had at night. Itachi dismissed her question and asked her to never bring it up again as he was not supposed to discuss the meeting with her or anyone else.
Soon, Itachi was promoted to chunin. Although Izumi was happy for him, she was bummed out realizing how far behind she was, unable to match up to Itachi. Itachi tried to cheer her up by reminding her that she was on her way to graduating from the academy a year earlier than others. When Itachi asked her why she chose the cruel and blood-stained life of a ninja, she stated that she wanted to be a strong ninja like her father, strong and capable of helping others.
Izumi soon graduated from the ninja academy and became a genin of the Hidden Leaf. She was now allowed to attend the secret Uchiha meetings held at night, where she would often meet Itachi, who had joined the ranks of an Anbu now. Just like Itachi, Izumi did not approve of the clan’s plan for a coup and their growing anger toward the village.
After Shisui Uchiha’s death, the clan’s plan for a coup reached its final stages. In the anime, to prevent a war between the clan and the village and save civilian lives, Itachi joined forces with who he believed was Madara Uchiha but was Obito Uchiha in disguise, and orchestrated the Uchiha Clan Massacre. In the anime, Izumi confronted Obito during his attack on the headquarters of the Konoha Military Police Force and was killed by him.
In the novel, Itachi chose Izumi to be his first victim. When Izumi discovered him, he used Tsukuyomi on her after sneaking into her house and knocking out her mother. Izumi experienced seventy years of a blissful life in a split second in this genjutsu. She became a chunin, Itachi proposed to her, she retired as a ninja, she and Itachi got married, she gave birth and they raised kids and watched their kids grow in front of their eyes. She grew old with Itachi, she got sick, Itachi took care of her, and then she was on her deathbed. Izumi fainted as the genjutsu was over and expressed her gratitude to Itachi, thanking him in her last moments of awareness. The death she felt within the illusion caused her body to also pass away in the real world and she met with her unfortunate but blissful demise. In her last moments, she was grateful that she got to live the life she always dreamed of, growing old with Itachi and dying by his side.
Izumi was a truly kind and gentle soul who was considerate of others’ feelings. Her father was her role model. She blamed herself for her father’s death as she could not help him in his battle. She dedicated her life to becoming a strong kunoichi so she could help others, like her father, and never feel helpless as she did that day. She was dedicated to her goal and would compare her skills with Itachi. She would often beat herself up as she was not as skilled as Itachi and was unable to progress as quickly as him.
Izumi was one of the few members, like Itachi and Shisui Uchiha, who was never infected by the Curse of Hatred that the Uchiha suffered from. Although she distrusted her fellow clanmates due to their hatred, she was still faithful and felt great pride in being an Uchiha. She refused to believe that an Uchiha would risk the lives of others by summoning the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox to attack the village.
Izumi adored and respected Itachi and was deeply in love with him. In the novel Itachi Shinden: Book of Bright Light, she accepted her death at Itachi’s hands. She believed Itachi was doing what was best for the clan and placed her faith in him, sacrificing her life. Even though it was simply a genjutsu, she was happy to be able to live the life she had always dreamt of having with him—growing old and having children—together.
Izumi Uchiha had long brown hair that she used to wear in a ponytail in her youth, bangs that framed her face, ebony eyes, and a mole beneath her right eye. She had a shuriken hostler on her right leg, a red armband on her left arm, a long, purple fingerless glove that nearly reached her elbow, and a high-collared long-sleeved blouse with the Uchiha clan symbol on the back, a standard attire commonly worn by the members of the Uchiha Clan.
In addition, she also wore a Hidden Leaf Headband with blue straps, an indication of her affiliation to the Hidden Leaf Village as a kunoichi. She also wore standard black sandals paired with her usual attire.
Izumi was one of the very few members of the Uchiha Clan that had the ability to awaken the Sharingan, their storied dojutsu. Even before Itachi himself, she awakened her Sharingan after her father passed away during the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's attack on the Hidden Leaf Village. Although she awakened it at a very young age, she was unable to sustain it for very long since she lacked the appropriate chakra levels, and every time she used it, she quickly passed out as she depleted her chakra reserves. She was highlighted in the anime to have particularly strong taijutsu skills. Izumi's graduation a year earlier than the rest was taken as evidence that she was a rather skilled, exceptional, and accomplished kunoichi.
Other than the manga and its anime adaptation, Izumi is also a part of games and novels related to the franchise. With the publication of Itachi Shinden: Book of Bright Light, Izumi made her literary debut. She also marked her debut in the gaming category with Naruto Mobile.
