In his Genin years, Jiraiya was part of Team Hiruzen, under Hiruzen Sarutobi, teaming up with Tsunade and Orochimaru, right after he graduated from the Ninja Academy. In one of their training sessions, Jiraiya tried the summoning jutsu to prove his skill - but not having a summoning contract, he found himself at Mount Myoboku, a resident of sage toads. In the coming days, Jiraiya trained in the Hidden Leaf Village to become a skilled shinobi, as well as at Mount Myoboku to learn Senjutsu, and soon became known as the Toad Sage. The Great Toad Sage of Mount Myoboku, Gamamaru, told Jiraiya about a prophecy that there would come a child who would bring either peace to the shinobi world or great destruction, and that Jiraiya would be the guide of the ChildofProphecy. To fulfill his destiny, Jiraiya went on a journey, traveling the world to find The Child of Prophecy. He picked up writing as his passion along the way.
In his years as a shinobi, Jiraya was promoted to the rank of a Jonin and got his own team, Team Jiraiya. His team consisted of Minato Namikaze who is the only known member of the team, and 2 other genins. Minato progressed at an exponential rate under Jiraiya’s tutelage. Jiraiya also taught Minato senjutsu of Mount Myoboku but due to Minato’s inability to balance natural energy efficiently, he was unable to use it in battle. In the near future, Minato developed an S rank jutsu, Rasengan, investing 4 years in training. He also taught Jiraiya how to use it.
During the Second Great Ninja War, although their team under Hiruzen had disbanded, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade came together and fought in the war as a team. They went toe to toe against Hanzo of the Salamander as Jonins but came back from the battlefield renowned as the Three Legendary Sannin of the Leaf.
During the Second Great Ninja War, Jiraiya meets NagatoUzumaki, Konan, and Yahiko, who became his pupil and later founded the organization known as Akatsuki with the purpose of ending the war and bringing peace to the shinobi world. Jiraiya believed that Nagato was the Child of Prophecy as he possessed the eyes of the Sage of Six Paths, Rinnegan, and believed that he would be the one who would bring peace to the world. After Jiraiya was convinced that the three of them were capable of defending themselves, he continued on his journey. Unfortunately, the student that he believed in became the cause of his untimely demise.
On his journey, Jiraiya found himself back in the leaf village where he met his godson, Naruto Uzumaki. Naruto became his pupil, and he trained and traveled with Jiraiya. Jiraiya taught him Rasengan. After Jiraiya's confrontation with Pain, he was convinced that Naruto was the actual Child of Prophecy who would bring balance and peace to the shinobi world.
Although Jiraiya did not showcase great skills in ninjutsu or any other field, as he grew older, he became one of the most feared shinobi of his time. In the Second Great Ninja War, Jiraiya along with his partners, Tsunade and Orochimaru, proved their mettle in a battle against Hanzo of the Salamander affiliated with the Hidden Rain Village. Hanzo acknowledged their strength and named them the Legendary Sannin of the Hidden Leaf. Members of the most prestigious clans like the Uchiha Clan and the Seven Swordsmen of the Blood Mist were no match for him. Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshikage stated that even if they both attacked Master Jiraiya, they would still lose against him.
In his years of training, Jiraiya had acquired great skill and ninjutsu in his journey and had even mastered Senjutsu. He came to be known as the Toad Sage. Jiraiya had a great association with the toads of MountMyoboku and was usually seen with the toads as he used their help for many purposes during missions. Like infiltrating enemy territory. He had also acquired certain toad skills such as the ability to spit oil out of his mouth.
Jiraiya’s chakra and physical prowess were on a level of their own as he was able to summon Gamabunta, the head of the toads of Mount Myoboku, one of their strongest warriors. In the anime, viewers have witnessed Jiraiya being able to lift large boulders and even fight a Giant Multi-Headed Dog summoned bythe Six Paths of Pain.
Master Jiraiya was well versed in taijutsu and had many ninjutsu at his disposal, such as Wild Lion’s Mane, a technique in which he manipulated his hair to attack and defend against the enemy. Jiraiya was the one who taught Naruto how to use Rasengan and Odama (Giant) Rasengan. He was also able to manipulate 4 Chakra Natures; Fire Release, Water Release, Wind Release, and Earth Release, and he was even capable of Yang Release. Even though he was not good when it came to Genjutsu, he was perfectly capable of breaking out of a Genjutsu.
Master Jiraiya has also displayed a great mastery of Fuinjutsu. He has showcased his skills with the Eight Trigrams Sealing Technique which he used to seal the Nine-Tails into Naruto.
Master Jiraiya had mastered the art of Senjutsu (Sage Mode) on Mount Myoboku under the tutelage of Fukasaku, an elder sage toad. As Master Jiraiya’s mastery over balancing nature energy and his chakra was not optimal, he gained toad-like features whenever he entered Sage Mode. Senjutsu requires a constant supply of natural energy which was a bit troublesome in the midst of the battle. To counter that, Jiraiya used to fuse with Fukasaku and Shima on his shoulders who gather nature energy for him.
Sage mode gives Jiraiya a boost in his power stats such as speed, strength, and agility, and also increases the firepower of his Ninjutsu, such as Ultra Big Ball Rasengan. Master Jiraiya is unable to cast Genjutsu, but when he is fused with Fukasaku and Shima, they can cast a strong Genjutsu, Sage Art: Goemon that not even Six Paths of Pain were able to break out of.
